By the start of the new decade, customers won't be able to buy a new Opel Adam. Opel Karl and Opel Cascada won't also be available. This is because Opel will stop selling the Adam and Karl city cars as well as the Cascada compact convertible starting 2020 as the carmaker shifts its focus and comply with future emissions regulations.
According to Opel, it will not replace the current iterations of the Adam, Karl and Cascada when they reach the end of their life cycles. However, the Adam, Karl and Cascada will still be sold until the end of 2019. That gives customers planning to acquire any of these to-be-ditched models more than a year to make their plans a reality. Opel said the decision was meant to help the carmaker comply with future carbon dioxide emissions guidelines and to help it shift its focus to high volume segments.
This decision to discontinue the Adam, Karl and Cascada forms part of greater scheme at Opel -- the PACE! Plan. This PACE! When Opel builds the next-generation Adam sometime in 2018, Buick could have that minicar rebadge as part of its lineup in the United States. Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president of Buick and GMC, told Automotive News in an interview that while he wants to have a rebadged Opel Adam added into Buick’s lineup, the current generation of the sporty three-door minicar was not engineered or made for the US.
He said that that he looked at the possibility of fast-tracking the Adam into the Buick range sooner than later, as the vehicle “would make a great Buick." He said that it would be "cost prohibitive" to revamp the current-generation Adam for the US, but hinted that any future redesign of the vehicle may allow it to be tailored for the country.

Back in September, Opel launched the Adam S at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Today, the manufacturer announced that the 2015 Opel Adam S will be priced from 18,690 euros including 19% VAT in Germany. Bryan Adams, the well-known Canadian musician and photographer, teamed up with Opel in order to create a limited edition of the Adam city car. The edition is limited to just 7 units and each of them will be auction, while the money will be donated to the “Bryan Adams Foundation”.

The Opel and Vauxhall brands managed to hike their market share in Europe in 2013, thanks to the good demand for the new Adam minicar that helped offset a slumping auto market. Opel and sister brand Vauxhall logged a European market share of 5.61 percent in 2013, up from 5.59 percent in 2012, Opel has disclosed, citing preliminary sales figures.
In its home market Germany, Opel managed to increase its market share to 7.0 percent from 6.9 percent. The slight increase in market share comes despite the still slumping sales in Europe, where the vehicle market is expected to have shrunk by 25 percent, or 4.3 million vehicles, in 2013 compared 2007 levels, analysts at Moody's Investors Service said.
European auto industry association ACEA will publish European car registration figures for 2013 on Jan. 16, 2014. Opel is preparing to launch a version of its Adam minicar that’s styled like an SUV, a source told Automotive News Europe. Last March, Opel presented the Adam Rocks Concept at the Geneva Auto Show. The new car, which will be based on this concept, features a slightly higher ride height and bulkier bumpers compared with the standard Adam hatchback.
The Adam Rocks production version will go up against models like the Volkswagen Cross Up (an SUV-styled version of VW's Up minicar) and the Fiat Panda 4x4 (which is four-wheel drive, the only version to feature this).

The production of the Adam minicar and Corsa subcompact at Opel’s factory in Eisenach, Germany, will stop for several days in October 2013. General Motors chief executive Dan Akerson bemoaned a decision made before its collapse in 2009 to develop the Opel Adam minicar and the Opel Cascada convertible only for the Chinese market but not for the United States. He is practically wishing for these models to come to the US. During an investor conference at GM's suburban Detroit proving grounds, Akerson said that the addition of the Opel Adam and Cascada would help Buick in the US and in China "in terms of demographics."

Over 20,000 customer orders have been received by German carmaker Opel for its new Adam minicar since October 2012. General Motors' loss-making European unit disclosed that majority of the orders for the Adam was received before its launch in mid-January. GM considers the Adam as crucial for the turnaround of its operations in Europe, where the carmaker expects to post a full-year operating loss of between $1.5 billion and $1.8 billion in 2012.
The expected losses for 2012 were much larger than what GM’s European operations posted in 2011 at $747 million in 2011. GM intends to achieve a break-even in Europe by mid-decade. It seems that the Adam would do well, as evidenced by the early interest in the minicar.
In fact, German enthusiast magazine Auto Motor und Sport recently named the Adam the second-best car of its class -- even before its rollout. Opel/Vauxhall is positive that it could build its new Adam minicar in Germany and still post profits, Opel sales and marketing chief Alfred Rieck told Automotive News Europe. Rieck remarked that the way Adam has been constructed provides the carmaker the possibility to build it in Germany and still be profitable.
Opel is producing the Adam at its Eisenach plant Germany, in contrast to the current trend in which carmakers build their vehicles in Eastern Europe due to lower wages in the region. Opel designed the Adam on a shortened version of the platform that underpins the Opel Corsa to reduce engineering costs. Both the Adam and the Corsa will share the same paint shop, body shop and assembly line to cut manufacturing costs.
The two cars will also share powertrains. The Adam will be powered by the 1.2- and 1.4-liter gasoline engines that run the Corsa. Opel/Vauxhall has terminated the development of an electric version of the Adam minicar, citing high costs. Opel’s project has already reached the stage of development of a working car, using the same technology applied to the incoming Chevrolet Spark EV minicar. According to Dieter Metz, Opel's chief engineer for the Adam, the termination of the Adam EV project was a business decision.
He detailed that Opel could not charge the customer the price needed to make it work on the cost aspect. Alfred Rieck, Opel's head of sales and marketing, remarked that electric vehicles are hard to sell since customers are not willing to pay higher prices for EV technology. Rieck quipped that in looking at the technology available on the market today, electric vehicles are very expensive.
He noted that a carmaker would decide on a certain price of the car but consumers would not be interested in it, adding that only increased sales would bring down prices of electric vehicles. Opel currently markets the Ampera plug-in hybrid, considered as a sibling model to the Chevrolet Volt. Opel/Vauxhall will be selling its new Adam minicar at a starting price of EUR11,500 ($14,870) in January 2013 in Germany. The price is applicable to the entry-level 1.2-liter gasoline-powered version of the new three-door car. It is just EUR100 less expensive than its chief rival, the Fiat 500. The bottom-of-the-range 1.2-liter Fiat 500 has a starting price of EUR 11,600.
