Peugeot S.A. is relying on China and the rising demand for station wagons in Europe to help its new 508 large car be a success. European buyers in the last 10 years have steered clear of large cars made by volume brands in favor of premium sedans, wagons and SUVs from Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz as well as SUV-styled crossovers with a high riding position from mass-market and luxury carmakers.
Peugeot expects half of 508 sales to come from the station wagon variant, with three quarters of the volume coming from fleet sales to business customers. The 508 replaces two slow-selling Peugeot cars: the 407 mid-sized car and the 607 large sedan.
Laurent Blanchet, Peugeot’s director for upper-segment models said that the segment has consolidated and may grow again on increased demand for wagons. The battle for supremacy in China among premium SUVs with long wheelbases will soon hot as Mercedes-Benz reveals the long-wheelbase version of the GLC. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC L will only be sold in the Chinese market and will compete against the long-wheelbase variant of the Audi Q5 crossover (Q5 L). Mercedes-Benz is expected to unveil the new GCL L to the public at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in November 2018.
When compared, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC L basically looks like the regular wheelbase version – just like any extended model being sold in the Chinese market. However, the long wheelbase variant of the GCL does appear extended on the side because of its now stretched length. This is evident beyond the B-pillars of the new GLC L, where the roofline looks to have grown longer. This is also evident when looking at its rear doors, which now appear to be longer than those in the regular wheelbase version of the GLC SUV.

Now, the Czech carmaker is formally introducing online the coupe version of its Kodiaq SUV, revealing a number of details that should excite potential buyers in China.
According to Skoda, the exterior of the new Kodiaq GT coupe SUVis wrapped in sporty proportions. With a length of around 4.63 meters, it is slightly shorter than the Kodiaq SUV. On the front, the new Kodiaq GT is marked by a black-framed grille with chrome-plated dual ribs, as bordered on top by a wide bonnet, on the sides by LED headlights, and on the bottom by a three-dimensional bumper. The new Kodiaq SUV also features a front spoiler with wide air inlets.

For the longest time, the Skoda Yeti was the only crossover model that the automaker offered to the market. However, that particular model did not really live up to its body style because it became known as an eccentric but adorable tall and rugged hatchback. Mercedes-Benz is showing some love for the automotive customers in China by unveiling the long-wheelbase version of the A-Class at Auto China 2018, also known as the Beijing Motor Show. The very first A-Class L will be exclusively produced in China, with sales to commence in the country and in other parts of the world in the second half of the year.
While the fourth generation of the A-Class bound for Western Europe next month is the hatchback, the A-Class unveiled at Beijing is a notchback, and Mercedes-Benz is officially calling this compact car the A-Class L Sedan, with the “L” suffix referring to its long-wheelbase character.
This is because the wheelbase of the A-Class L Sedan (at 2,789 mm) is around 60 mm longer than that of the A-Class hatchback (at 2,729 mm), offering more knee room for rear passengers. In terms of dimensions, the new A-Class L Sedan measures 4,609 in length, 1,796 mm in width and 1,460 mm in height. There’s good news for international carmakers as the Chinese government recently announced that they have scrapped protectionist rules that don’t allow foreign automakers to set up businesses in China. With this change, the People’s Republic will be opening up its auto market in 2020.
Right now, part of the regulations are that to avoid hefty taxes to sell cars in China, foreign carmakers have to start open ventures with local firms and they must not own more than 50 percent of the Chinese counterpart.
These measures were actually introduced back in 1994. It is inevitable that there will soon be a fully electric Rolls-Royce vehicle. But it seems that a Rolls-Royce with an electric powertrain will arrive earlier than everyone thinks. The Chinese market will soon be getting the exclusive China-only model, Mercedes-Benz GLC-L, for a premium of 15,000 yuan ($2,300) more than the regular model.

This just in: China has banned a huge load of cars being produced locally because they do not meet the country’s emissions and fuel consumption requirements. To be more specific, a total of 553 passenger car models that are being produced will be discontinued as early as January 1. Sources from Bloomberg said that this announcement was initially made by the China Vehicle Technology Service Center.
We were not given a complete list of the cars that had been banned, though this includes vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Chevrolet, and plenty others. Many big names will be affected. In the publication we saw, sedans with internal codes BJ7302ETAL2 (Mercedes), FV7145LCDBG (Audi) and SGM7161DAA2 (Chevrolet) are all covered by this ban.
Though 553 may sound like a huge number to us, the secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association, Cui Dongshu, said that that number is considered a small portion of the number of passenger cars being produced in China. On the other hand, an analyst who works in China Merchants Securities Co., Wang Liusheng said that this is the first time that the country is taking action by restricting production of certain models. The 2018 Jaguar XEL with its stretched-out wheelbase and longer doors is the newest addition to the growing list of premium sedans in China---joining the ranks of Mercedes-Benz C-Class L, BMW 3Li and Audi A4L in the long wheelbase category.
Given the increased wheelbase measurement, the XEL is basically an upsized XE variant. But to further differentiate between the regular XE and the elongated sedan, the XEL’s side sills and door handles have been specially painted in chrome in addition to the special XEL badges placed across the windows.
The wheelbase now has an overall measurement of 2,935mm (or 115.5 inches) after Jaguar has extended the distance between the two axles by 3.9 inches (100mm). In contrast, the standard XF’s wheelbase is longer by an inch or 25mm. Several automakers including Porsche, Volkswagen, Smart and even Land Rover have all been victimized by cheap Chinese copycats. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design boss, recently said that they are now wary of showing concepts years before they’re produced because they fear that the Chinese will replicate them. This is because some of these Chinese brands are very quick at manufacturing and that they could easily beat the production version to the market. Apart from delaying the introduction of concept cars, Jaguar Land Rover has also filed copyrights and competition complaints in China against the LandWind X7.
Just last week, McGovern also said that they are nervous about introducing their concepts as they can simply be copied just like what happened with the Range Rover Evoque. Jaguar has just released the first official image of its newest offering, the new Jaguar XEL. Essentially the long-wheelbase version of the Jaguar XE compact sedan, the new Jaguar XEL is designed to offer a more spacious interior and is targeted only towards the large auto market in China.
Customers in China are known to prefer premium vehicles, especially ones that offer a spacious rear cabin. Automakers, or any other company for that matter, tend to listen when their largest market starts talking. In this case, it is China that had announced its demands as it aims to quickly facilitate the shift to electric-powered vehicles and other forms of alternative energy. China is urging manufacturers to make this possible. To be more specific, the Chinese government recently set out some rules and a credit system that covers how automakers sell their plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, and fully electric cars. In other words, these automakers will have to meet these standards in China or risk penalties. If car manufacturers do not meet the requirements, then they will have to use credits or pay a fine. The bottom line is that if they do not shift to alternative energy, they will have to waste extra money.
So beginning in 2019, a minimum energy score of 10 percent must be met by automakers. And by 2020, this will increase to 12 percent. This score will rely on sales of plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, and fully-electric cars. Credits are earned in the process.
Right now, it might still be a bit confusing because credits for low or zero emission vehicles can differ from one another. To avoid losing credits or getting fined, car makers who build or import at least 30,000 cars to China should start getting into greener options, and dedicate most of their efforts on those. Volkswagen recently revealed their first ever compact crossover, namely the T-Roc. This model goes right below the Tiguan in the company’s lineup, as its smallest subcompact ever. This model is like a hybrid of an SUV and a compact hatchback, and what we know is that it will be sold in Europe before the year ends. The CUV will make its first public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
When the T-Roc becomes available in Germany and the rest of Europe, customers will be able to choose from a number of engine options - for both gasoline and diesel. This includes a 1.0 liter, a 1.5 liter, and 2.0 liter TSI units, with 114 horsepower (85 kilowatts), 148 horsepower (110 kW), and 188 horsepower (140 kW), respectively. The first two can be had with six speed manual giving power to the front wheels, while a seven-speed dual clutch can be an option for the 1.5 liter unit. The 2.0, on the other hand can be paired with the dual-clutch box. For those who prefer driving a diesel, the T-Roc will be available in a 1.6 liter or a 2.0 liter TDI motor with the same output as the gasoline engines. For the T-Roc, entry-level models will be available in front-wheel drive, while larger engines can get an all-wheel drive option.
Initially, the company considered a plan to bring the model to the United States after the European release, but it seems like the company has changed their mind. Because now, reports say that the model will only be limited to Europe and China, and that piece of tidbit apparently came from VW insiders. This means that the United States will only be limited to the Tiguan if they want a compact model. General Motors’ presence in China just got more electrifying as the carmaker – through its SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture – recently officially unveiled the Baojun E100. Considered as the brand’s first fully electric vehicle in China, the Baojun E100 comes in a very compact package and is offered in a very compact price.
At first glance, an onlooker may mistake the Baojun E100 as Chinese version of the smart ForTwo or the Scion iQ. But after a closer look, it becomes apparent that the design language is very different while the horse logo mounted on the front end of the E100 quickly tells us that it isn’t a smart or a Scion.
Long and wide enough to accommodate up to two adults in a comfortable manner, the E100 is indeed a compact unit, even with its height of 1,670 mm.
