Opel denies reports of deal to make Citroen C5, Peugeot 508 at its plant

Opel will not build Citroen C5 and Peugeot 508 at its Ruesselsheim plant in Germany, dismissing a report by daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as speculation. Citing a union official as its source, the daily reported that Opel will build the next generations of PSA/Peugeot-Citroen’s C5 and 508 cars at the Ruesselsheim site.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quoted Armin Schild, a senior German union official, as saying that serious negotiations are ongoing. If the report is true, such a move from Opel, a unit of General Motors, would provide Ruesselheim with an extra 130,000 units of annual production, making the site more cost efficient by operating on three shifts.

Although GM and PSA currently have an existing partnership agreement, the area of manufacturing is not currently an element of the deal. The alliance between GM and PSA involves logistics, purchasing and engineering, according to Opel. PSA's Rennes site in France currently produces the C5 and 508, while Opel’s Ruesselsheim plant builds the sized Insignia and Astra models.

Peugeot confirms specifications of 508 Saloon HYbrid4, 508 RXH

Peugeot has revealed the specifications for the 508 Saloon HYbrid4 and the 508 RXH, which both use the newest modular hybrid technology launched as a world first on the 3008 HYbrid4. They use the successful 2.0-liter HDi 163 Diesel engine to generate power for the front wheels and combine it with a 37bhp electric motor in order to drive rear wheels.

This ground-breaking modular solution is now being put into use in the bigger platform 508 automobiles that boost overall driving experience and product flexibility. The 508 RXH is a customized derivative with a characteristic appearance, all-route capability and high-end appearance. On the other hand, the 508 Saloon HYbrid4 utilizes its hybrid powertrain to optimize driving performance, versatility and economy. Both vehicles benefit from the lowest-in-sector taxation.

The Peugeot 508 Saloon HYbrid4 is fitted with an all-inclusive specification that is similar to the well-specified 508 Allure but with the HYbrid4 technology benefits.

Peugeot S.A. is relying on China and the rising demand for station wagons in Europe to help its new 508 large car be a success. European buyers in the last 10 years have steered clear of large cars made by volume brands in favor of premium sedans, wagons and SUVs from Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz as well as SUV-styled crossovers with a high riding position from mass-market and luxury carmakers.

Peugeot expects half of 508 sales to come from the station wagon variant, with three quarters of the volume coming from fleet sales to business customers. The 508 replaces two slow-selling Peugeot cars: the 407 mid-sized car and the 607 large sedan.

Laurent Blanchet, Peugeot’s director for upper-segment models said that the segment has consolidated and may grow again on increased demand for wagons. German cars like the Volkswagen Passat have dominated the mid-sized segment. In developing the 508, Peugeot benchmarked German premium brands for quality.

It is priced from £20,850. Meanwhile, the entry-level diesel Access has a starting price of £19,050. The 1.6 e-HDi engine generates 112bhp and 180lb ft of torque, with 60mpg achievable.

Peugeot’s 508 sedan and wagon will be getting additional derivatives as part of the company’s plan to boost the car's profitability. Jean-Marc Gales, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen head of brands, said that it is preparing to expand its product lineup with niche-market variants of mainstream models.

In an interview, Gales said that the brand will pursue this strategy with the 508 sedan and wagon because niche models can command significantly higher transaction prices than the original mass-market model. He believes that consumers are agreeable to paying a premium just to be given the chance to differentiate more.

As an example, he cited that a 3008 (compact crossover) is priced 3,000 euros higher than a 308 hatchback. However, Gales declined to divulge the likely variants of the 508.

The key attraction of Peugeot's new flagship saloon, the 508, is a 99g/km diesel hybrid. The saloon will debut this September at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. The 508 hybrid is equipped with a 160bhp 2.0-litre EU5 diesel partnered to a rear-mounted electric motor. The 508 hybrid will give this Peugeot model, which is sized like BMW 5-series, the fuel economy of a Prius.

When the electric motor cuts in, the 508 hybrid operates in four-wheel drive, with the diesel driving the front wheels and the motor the rears. Measuring 4.8m long, the 508 is as long as the '5 by Peugeot' show car shown at Geneva this year but is significantly larger than the 407 it directly replaces.

It is believed that the 508 will replace the 607, and will likely appeal to many French politicians as well. The Peugeot 508 will arrive in UK dealerships in mid-2011, about six months after other EU customers.

The Peugeot 508, which will be introduced at the Paris Motor Show this October, continues the three-digit tradition set by the 40 series and 50 series sedans. The 508’s design resembles the SR1 Concept car, and features a new high-tech interior and high quality finish.

The 508 will be offered with a new array of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. Potential buyers will appreciate the new technologies offered with the car.

The list includes Peugeot’s e-HDi system, which is basically a new-generation stop/start system with better driveability and economy. The carmaker also has plans to build a HYbrid4 version with a 147kW diesel and all-wheel drive potential and CO2 emissions of only 99 g/km.

Peugeot claims that its new diesel-electric hybrid 508 sedan will be the greenest large car in Europe. Peugeot said that the 508 hybrid will have CO2 emissions of 99 grams per kilometer and will use only 3.8 liters per 100km (62 US mpg). When driving in full-electric mode, it will have zero emissions.

For now, the only vehicles that emit less than 100g/km of CO2 are smaller-sized cars such as the Toyota Prius and Auris gasoline-electric hybrids and diesel versions of the Volkswagen Polo and Smart ForTwo.

Variants of the 508 with gasoline and diesel engines will debut in October at the Paris Motor Show and will start selling at the start of 2011. Peugeot has yet to announce when the diesel hybrid, called the 508 HYbrid 4, is expected to go on sale.
