Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL PHEV makes use of battery and fuel cell for operations

German premium carmaker Mercedes-Benz has created a new plug-in hybrid vehicle that combines the power of two technologies –electricity (battery) and fuel cell (hydrogen). In short distances, it relies on pure electricity. When there is a need to travel over long distance, this plug-in hybrid relies on the power of fuel cell. This is the new Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL PHEV.

Using the Mercedes GLC as the base, this technological showcase isn't a futuristic vehicle, but is a real SUV that will be delivered to customers at the end of October 2018. It was originally envisioned as a plug-in hybrid, but now represents an important step by the German carmaker in the development of fuel cell technology.

As engineered, the Mercedes GLC F-CELL PHEV features four operating modes: Battery, Charge, F-Cell and Hybrid. All operating modes are supported by an energy recovery function that allows energy to be recovered during braking or coasting, then store it in the lithium-ion battery.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV delivers more torque from bigger Atkinson-cycle 2.4-liter engine

A couple of years ago, Mitsubishi introduced the Outlander PHEV. And by now, they are giving the plug-in hybrid SUV a significant update for the 2019 model year, a few months after launching the model in the United States. The most important change though is found under the hood. This is because the former Otto-cycle 2.0 liter gasoline engine has been replaced by a larger Atkinson cycle 2.4 liter unit.

Mitsubishi decided not to share output number, but instead, they said that the torque has gone beyond 186 Newton metres (137 pound feet), which is attainable at 4,500 rpm in the previous Outlander PHEV. Meanwhile, efficiency has improved and a smoother operation is expected from it. The vehicle’s output remains a mystery to us at this point, but for what it is worth, the 2.0 liter engine had an output of 118 horsepower (87 kilowatts) at 4,500 rpm.

Furthermore, the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV benefits from a 10 percent generator output hike and a 10% boost of the rear motor’s output. They also decided to tweak its lithium ion battery pack that has a capacity of 13.8 kilowatts per hours, which has increased from the previous 12 kWh. Furthermore, the battery’s output has improved by 10 percent. These revisions also affected the electric range compared to the outgoing model with 22 miles too.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is recalling its i-MiEV units in Japan due to a production glitch that caused one lithium ion battery pack to melt and another to catch fire in March 2013. The carmaker will recall over 4,000 vehicles with the potentially faulty batteries in Japan starting mid-July. Mitsubishi has sold a small number of affected i-MiEVs in Europe and the United States.

Also affected is Mitsubishi’s Outlander plug-in hybrid crossover sold only in Japan. The carmaker has stopped production and sales of the affected vehicles. According to Mitsubishi spokeswoman Namie Koketsu, they are preparing appropriate measures for markets outside Japan, which may mean a similar recall in the US.

The carmaker said in April it had contacted drivers in the US about the glitch. The carmaker has come up with a solution to the problem in May that could prevent the defects.Koketsu said the new process will produce replacement batteries for the cars being recalled.

The Jaguar XJ_e PHEV grabbed two awards at the third annual RAC Future Car Challenge from Brighton to London held on November 3, 2012. The Jaguar XJ_e experimental plug-in hybrid was given the ‘Most Energy Efficient Luxury Car Prototype’ award and ‘Technical Panel’s Award of Merit’ at the event. Jaguar Land Rover sent three of its Jaguar XJ_e PHEV engineering research cars for the event, completing the 63-mile course on just 1.2 litres of petrol and 11kWh of electricity, equivalent to a fuel consumption of around 112 miles per gallon.

The XJ_e project is led by Jaguar Land Rover as part of its strategy to develop best-in-class low-carbon premium vehicles. The Jaguar XJ_e PHEV, which is partly financed by the United Kingdom Government’s Technology Strategy Board through the REEVolution project, has been engineered in partnership with leading technology companies in the UK to gain expertise for ultra-low carbon vehicles within the supply chain.

Pete Richings, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Hybrids & Electrification, remarked that RAC Future Car Challenge was the experimental vehicles’ first drive real-world conditions. Richings remarked that the Jaguar XJ_e PHEVs entered in the event “performed faultlessly” and delivered performance that exceeded the carmaker’s expectations. Richings further remarked that events like the RAC Future Car Challenge help Jaguar Land Rover to understand the technical challenges involved and provide an opportunity to showcase promising solutions.

When the U.S.-produced 2013 Honda Accord makes its debut, it may be available with I-4 and V-6 powertrains. However, the plug-in sedan variant is just one model year away. It’s likely that the 2014 Accord PHEV will be assembled in Japan and in small quantities. According to a new report, the Honda may start production of the advanced four-door in the U.S. as early as calendar-year 2015.

Unfortunately, profits can’t be possible with the current yen-to-dollar exchange rate. This is why Honda will continue to import Japanese-assembled Accord PHEVs to the U.S. This won’t be Honda’s first time to offer an Accord hybrid. An Accord V-6 Hybrid was available from 2004 to 2008 but it was discontinued because the premium-priced car concentrated more on performance than fuel economy.

Honda said that selling a hybrid version of a car beside a regular gas-only model can be more difficult than when offering a hybrid-only vehicle such as the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius since there is no non-hybrid variant of the same car that makes it hard for consumers to justify the additional cost.

Mitsubishi has unveiled more technical details for the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, which will be revealed to the public at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. The automaker said that the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is the first plug-in hybrid SUV in the world. Its powertrain is a development of systems that are already used on pure-electric Mitsubishi vehicles like the i-MiEV electric city car.

The front and rear wheels drive the two separate electric motors, taking away the need for a propshaft. It also provides a more refined control and response compared to mechanical four-wheel drive systems. Just like what could be expected of electric motors, the maximum torque could be immediately generated, enabling the PHEV to haven an acceleration time comparable with the others in the Outlander range.

Its lithium-ion batteries have a total voltage of 300V. An 80% charge can be achieved in about 30 minutes in quick-charge mode. It takes 4.5 hours to fully charge the battery from 0%. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine comes with Mitsubishi’s established MIVEC electronically-controlled variable valve timing system.
