Hyundai may start manufacturing a new pickup in the US by 2021

The Hyundai Santa Cruz Concept has earned a ton of praises after it was unveiled in Detroit almost three years ago. Oddly, it took a while before the company came to realize its importance in boosting the US sales which as of late, have not been quite so impressive.

It can be recalled that Michael J. O’Brien, Hyundai Motor senior executive, has told Reuters before about the company’s plan of launching a new pickup truck in the US. It was also mentioned then that the main issue was on how to increase the production --- especially for the Tucson which often runs short of supply.

Initial reports also indicate that the Hyundai Kona, which is slated to launch in US early next year will come from South Korea. Then there is Dave Zuchowski, former Hyundai Motor America CEO, who said earlier this year that new SUVs including the Santa Cruz project have all received the go-signal from its corporate headquarters. It was confirmed by Hyundai later on that the Santa Cruz concept has indeed been given the notice to proceed and is now aimed directly for the US market.

Ram’s aging full-sized pickup bids adieu with 1500 Hydro Blue Sport special edition

Soon, the current generation of the Ram 1500 will be saying goodbye. Nonetheless, it will all end on a sweet note as the American truck maker wouldn’t let the vaunted full-size pickup truck go without a bang. Thus, Ram is introducing the special-edition 2018 Ram 1500 Hydro Blue Sport.

This isn't the first time the Ram offered a vividly colored special edition of the Ram 1500 Sport pickup truck. In late 2016, the American truck maker created and offered the Ram 1500 Ignition Orange special edition. This year alone, Ram introduced Sublime (Green) and Copper Sport limited-edition trucks. Of course, the Ram 1500 Hydro Blue Sport won't be the last special edition that Ram would offer, but it would be the final model in the 2017 model year.

Wrapped in water-like blue exterior paint finish, the 2018 Ram 1500 Hydro Blue Sport is laden with a number of special features as standard. These include a black-decaled Sport performance hood, a new body-colored Sport grille with black billet inserts and black R-A-M letter badge. Other special features include the flat black exterior body-side and tailgate badging. This black body badging is complemented elegantly by black bezel projector headlamps up front and tail lights employing LED technology on the rear.

Mazda’s next-generation BT-50 pickup may be smaller but it will be 'manly'

By studying today’s trend, one would notice that crossovers and small pickup trucks are what most people are looking for, and to step up its game, Mazda decided that they would develop a new version of their longstanding BT-50 pickup. According to the automaker, the next generation pickup will still share the same platform as that of the Isuzu D-Max, just like its outgoing model. But even though it has the same mechanics as the Isuzu, the design will entirely be unique to Mazda.

In an interview between WheelsMag and Ikuo Maeda, Managing Executive Officer and Head of Design, the latter confirmed that a new BT-50 is being developed. He also said that they will face a challenge by converting the Mazda’s current design direction to a much smaller pickup truck.

Speaking of the design, Mazda said that their goal for the next generation pickup is to create a beautiful form that has tougher elements to give it some masculinity as well - after saying that it will be a tough job. Also, he mentioned that the pickup will get inspiration from the Vision Coupe and the Kai concept, both of which appeared at the recent Tokyo Motor Show a week ago.

Check out these renderings of the 2018 Dacia Duster: Pickup truck, gt or coupe

Not many may be familiar with the Dacia Duster, but for those who do, you probably know that it is insanely affordable. After being in the market for seven years, and after over a million units sold, it is finally going to get a second-generation model. To keep up with the current version, while keeping the costs minimal, Renault’s Romanian division will give the new generation the same underpinnings that will be housed in new exterior body as well as a more modern interior.

With this kind of reports circulating the net, it is unavoidable for artists with Photoshop skills to play with its current look and imagine the 2018 model year. For instance, we already found some photos from X-Tomi Design where artists are imagining all sorts of designs for the upcoming Duster. From these photos, we think that two of them may happen, while the other two are merely design experiments - the sporty GT and the three-door.

This basic version of the model with the unpainted bumpers could be an entry-level trim of the 2018 Dacia Duster. As you can see, it rides on a set of steel wheels, with unpainted side mirrors and door handles. We also heard that the company might lose the fog lights to really keep the starting price low. Some people may wonder why, but if the SUV’s unique selling point is its very affordable price, then you will probably agree.

More and more people are beginning to appreciate classic pickup trucks, which are quickly becoming an in-demand commodity. A lot of these trucks come from the late 1960s and one of the hottest ones would be this 1967 Chevy C-10 from the C/K series. And even if they are not celebrating 100 years of building pick up trucks, this restored model would look great at 2017 SEMA Show. However, they will actually be celebrating the aforementioned event next year.

By looking at the photos, you will be able to tell that Chevrolet will be bringing the truck to SEMA and the Texas State Fair, with its Centennial Blue finish similar to what the special edition Colorado and Silverado are wearing. Furthermore, the C-10 gets the same bowtie badges as well that celebrate the automaker’s heritage. The restored model sits on a set of 20-inch chrome wheels that are wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires. As for the braking system, it had also been upgraded with new discs on the front and rear. Suspension wise, we can’t really tell what’s been done to it but we’re pretty confident that it isn’t an unimportant change. As for the mechanical bits and other modifications, the company did not really discuss any of these at the C-10’s reveal.

Since we were not given any information regarding the engine, we can only guess what’s underneath that hood based on what we can see. The 1967 C-10 has dual turn down exhaust tips at the back, and the P-Zeros are pretty solid brakes. However, it does not have a very wide body, we are thinking that it won’t have that much horsepower, but will be a good cruiser instead.

That there’s bad blood between Mercedes-Benz and BMW doesn’t surprise anyone. The fierce competition between the two brands may have stemmed from the fact that they both have German roots, and have been in the automotive industry for a very long time. Nevertheless, it’s quite unusual for either automaker to bash the other in public.

During the Frankfurt Motor Show, Motoring witnessed Hendrik von Kunheim, BMW Senior Vice President for Asia and South Africa, criticize Mercedes’ new X-Class pickup calling it “appalling”, while being interviewed by the Australian media.

Furthermore, von Kunheim said that he was very disappointed when he saw the pickup at Geneva a couple of months ago, adding that “they can do better”. Though he did say that Mercedes-Benz builds fantastic cars, he said that this particular one was a “disappointment.”

The Nissan Frontier will officially hit the production line, according to the Japanese automaker. They also confirmed that the mid-size pickup truck will be assembled at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Mississippi. Despite this confirmation, the automaker did not say when the production will begin, but this is a sign that change is on its way.

Vice President of Manufacturing at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant, Steve Marsh, said that their employees in Canton are excited to build the next generation Frontier, considering it to be one of the best pickup trucks in America.

We have not received many details from Nissan with regards to the pickup’s new design. But if we remember correctly, back in 2014, the Frontier Diesel Runner Concept was introduced and it indicates the possibility of a diesel engine in the lineup. If that pushes through, the Frontier will probably be equipped with a Cummins-sourced 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel that can give out as much as 200 horsepower (149 kilowatts) and more than 350 pound-feet (474 Newton-metres) of torque.

Notably, all variants of Dark Label conform to the Euro 6 emission standards and are fitted with BlueMotion Technology that offers low rolling resistance tires, brake energy recuperation and start stop system for better fuel savings.

Ford Ranger is currently Ford’s best-selling pickup in Europe, delivering over 23,000 units since the start of 2017, that is a 12.1 percent increase compared to last year, and marks the best year for the Ranger since it launched. Having said that, the blue oval isn’t ready to come up with its successor just yet even if people have been talking about a next generation Ford Ranger. So instead of doing so, the automaker will reveal a special version they call the “Black Edition” instead. Expect to see this wow audiences at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show this month.

The Black Edition will solely be based on the Limited trim, and it will be featuring an Absolute Black paint, de-chromed, and a blacked-out grille, alloy wheels, bed bars and exterior details to match the look.

Some of the features this limited edition version includes would be a set of gadgets like the satellite navigation and SYNC 3 multimedia system, featuring an eight-inch touchscreen display, front parking sensors and rear view camera and dual-zone electric climate control. The power folding door mirrors are now heated, while it gets a set of seats with leather trim.

For those who are into pickup trucks, there’s good news as the new Renault Alaskan can now be yours as they expand to more countries in Europe. It had entered the South American market last year followed by its Colombian debut. The French automaker developed this model as an alternative to the Nissan Navara and the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, and it will be offering the one-ton pickup in Europe.

Under the hood of the Alaskan pickup is a 2.3-liter dCi diesel engine. Customers could either go for the base model with 160 horsepower (119 kilowatts) or the 190 horsepower (141 kilowatts) option. Both engines can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic. It has a towing capacity of 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms) and can haul up to 1,630 pounds (739 kilograms). The pickup is available in three driving modes including a two-wheel drive, a 4LO, or a 4H full AWD.

The functionality and performance of the Renault Alaskan are at par with competitors like the Ford Ranges and the Toyota Hilux, which are both currently out in the European market. Believe it or not, this truck can hit the 0 to 60 mile-per-hour (96 kilometers per hour) speed in only 12 seconds, before it reaches its top speed of 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour).

Amid the excitement related to the solar eclipse, Nissan revealed two of its pickups, both in a special edition livery. Instead of waiting for auto shows, Nissan chose to debut its new models in the United States on this auspicious day. The Japanese manufacturer has not introduced new models. Instead, it unveiled a Midnight Edition for the following models: Titan, Titan XD, and the Frontier.

For the Midnight Edition, expect to see a blacked out version of the cars. To be more specific, the Titan model will now get a black front grille, headlight surrounds, foglight trim. And for the Titan XD, it gets additional blacked out fender louvers too. Smaller details like the mirror caps, door handles, badges and step rails also get a darker shadow like shade too. Other than that, they will now have a set of black painted 20-inch wheels to complete the midnight look. If you are not a big fan of all-black cars and would rather see some contrast, you can order the car in a different finish such as Gun Metallic gray and Pearl White.

The Midnight Edition package is not just limited to the car’s exterior. In the cabin, you will find Charcoal black accents together with black floor mats.

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 made its competition debut at Best in the Desert’s “Vegas to Reno” challenge on weekend. Hall Racing competes in the 550-mile racing on board the Colorado ZR2 in what was dubbed as the longest off-road competition in the US. The race started Friday, August 18th and was expected to be attended by as many as 350 participants.

However, out of the 336 competing teams, only 204 of them managed to complete the grueling course with Hall Racing finishing in first class 7300. Riding at an average speed of 28.6 mph, Chevrolet impresses with the 550-mile off-road course which took Hall Racing team’s Chad Hall and Frank DeAngelo 18:50:16 to run up to the finish line.

The ZR2 comes armed with a number of performance upgrades developed by Chevrolet’s Performance Engineering team and Hall Racing. While Hall’s team took to compete under the stock production class for mid-size trucks and SUVs, the ZR2 has been equipped with a roll cage for safety aside from its racing seats and safety harnesses. Other fitments include off-road lights, a 44-gal. fuel tank, a two-way radio and a GPS.

During the North American International Auto Show at Detroit in 2015, Hyundai introduced a concept pickup truck they named the Santa Cruz. This model took home the Concept Truck of the Year recognition later that year from the North American Concept Vehicle Awards. It had grabbed the attention of a lot of people who simply loved it. Though Hyundai was planning to bring it to the production line, they seemed hesitant launching it in the United States.

The Santa Cruz concept was targeted at a younger market with more active lifestyles. These comprise the so called “urban adventurers” who don’t need or want the compromises that come with large trucks.

Two years later, it seems that Hyundai has warmed up to the United States according to Reuters. Having said that, it looks like the company is going to launch a pickup in the US, this statement was confirmed by Michael J. O'Brien, the company's Vice President of Corporate and Product Planning in the US. Though the truck may not exactly be the production model of the Santa Cruz, it will be a very similar to the model. It is not definite when the company will launch the pickup truck as they have not said anything about it yet. However, we do know that updated versions of the Santa Fe SUV will come out within the next two years. The SUV will then be followed by a 2020 model year for the Tucson.

Here are some things that potential buyers of the Ford F-150 and Ford Expedition could look forward to for the 2018 model year. The 2018 models of the F-150 pickup truck and the Expedition sports utility vehicle are now available with new engines that don’t only offer greater performance, but also provide better efficiency than the mills they are replacing.

Ford notes that the 75 percent of 2017 F-150 trucks sold were powered by V6 engines. Thus, the carmaker is now introducing new engines, including a new V6 mill. The 2018 F-150 could be powered by a new 3.3-liter V6 engine that provides more power output and torque – as well as more efficient -- than the larger 3.5-liter V6 it replaced. Ford was able to squeeze greater levels of performance and efficiency into this smaller V6 engine by adding dual port and direct-injection technology.

Compared to 3.5-liter V6 engine in the 2017 F-150, the new 3.3-liter V6 mill in the 2018 F-150 produces 8 hp more max output (290 hp at 6,500 rpm) and 12 lb.-ft. more peak torque (265 lb.-ft. at 4,000 rpm).

Hey hottie, care for a ride? Well, unfortunately (or fortunately for you) this low slung pickup truck is just a product of a person’s creative imagination. WinningDesigns, an artist based in Brisbane, Queensland Australia had thought about dressing up the Mercedes-Benz X-Class with a new outfit. Out of all the many choices, instead, he chose a “low-rider look” and so goes the self-styled “Slammed Mercedes-Benz X-Class”.

Let’s see…Is there a new bumper in place? Check. How about a new grille? Check. Side skirts? Check. Bigger wheels? Check. Roof bars? Nah.

The thing is, a low-riding pickup with the star emblem doesn’t appeal to everyone. Despite it being technically a Nissan Navarra bearing the Mercedes symbol. Any vehicle class with the classy Mercedes logo in our opinion should be better off left in its stock form. But we’d allow a few exceptions among the AMG-wearing coupes and cabriolets. But as they say, to each his own, so there it is, a Slammed Mercedes-Benz X-Class. What a rare sight to behold indeed.

For many people, the idea of a vehicle that can deliver exceptional off-road capabilities is typically seen as mutually exclusive with a comfortable interior. All of that is expected to change with the reveal of the customized Ford Ranger.

Created by Carlex Design in partnership with MS-RT Road Technology, this Ford Ranger can take on any terrain while making sure that occupants get to experience total comfort. Though this combination may come as a surprise to many, what is more surprising is how the team calls this customized version. The two companies have dubbed this off-roader as the VR/46. It’s quite surprising that the name is inspired by motorcycle racing champion Valentino Rossi, a racer known mainly for winning races on the track instead of on the dirt roads.

In terms of actual contribution, Carlex was in-charge of refurbishing the interior. Looking into the cabin therefore, one is likely to see Nappa leather upholstery with both the console and the center of the seats revealing stitched patterns. Meanwhile the seatbacks and the headrests are embroidered with the VR/46 letters. The design of the steering wheel shows the middle having a striped pattern with a number of sections decorated with leather. According to Carlex, these changes ensure that comfort and overall grip are both improved. When it comes to the color, majority of the interior shows different shades of black though the gearshift has a yellow strip which gives the inside that needed flash of color.

The Honda Ridgeline pickup turned out to be a success when it first came out in the market. In the first half of 2017, the company has already delivered over 18,000 units. So to keep customers interested in the model, Honda gave the 2018 model year some upgrades.

Instead of the twelve trims that Honda offered for the Ridgeline before, they have reduced this to just nine variants for the 2018 model year. The company took out the base RT with the all-wheel-drive setup, as well as the RTS with AWD too. So now, the new entry level model has become the Ridgeline Sport with the all-wheel-drive setup that has a starting price of $35,070 - that already is a $3,695 increase from the lowest-priced model you could get of the previous generation.

If you fancy a front-wheel-drive, then you can go for the cheaper $29,630 model. For the sake of comparison, it is $155 more expensive than the 2017 model. The most expensive trim one could get is the Black Edition AWD that has a $43,120 price tag.

Did you know that Spectre, the 24th movie instalment based on Ian Fleming’s novel, had ten Land Rover Defenders to use back in 2015? Well, that is because the producers asked Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations to build ten heavily customized crew cab 110s especially for James Bond’s villains.

All ten vehicles were then taken to Bowler, Land Rover’s British racing partner for a wide range of upgrades including an uprated 180hp over the standard 120hp engine output. Included in the upgrades as well were Recaro racing bucket seats, harnesses, a full- roll cage, a new set of 37-inch tyres plus a warn winch with rope at the front. For complete control during an action-packed sequence, Bowler had also equipped the entire fleet with Bilstein rally shock absorbers.

But since some of the vehicles got ruined while filming the movie, only a few have remained intact to this day. One of them is the Land Rover Defender SVX Concept that was sold to a private client immediately after the minor footages have been completed. This particular vehicle had only been used for drive-by scenes and it was unscathed throughout the movie. The owner has now consigned the massive off-roader to RM Sotheby’s for the annual London event this coming September 6. The auction house will offer the vehicle to registered bidders. The bidding will run for approximately four to five hours.

Even cops get excited when they’re assigned to drive the best cars in the market. In Austria, police officers drive around in a Porsche 911 Carrera while in Milan, authorities run after bad guys in a Ferrari 458 Spider.

In the United States, one of the biggest automakers that provide vehicles in the law enforcement would be Ford. Manager of commercial and government fleet sales of Ford, Michele Bartlett, said that in 2016, the company has sold 43,000 police vehicles alone, that is about 60 percent of the market. Now, Ford had just revealed the 2018 F-150 Police Responder, and they are hoping to further expand their presence in the country.

The 2018 F-150 Police Responder is the first pursuit-rated pickup truck and is based on the FX4 off-road package. This package gives the Police Responder a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that enables it to put out 375 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. This will enable the truck to reach a top speed of 100 miles per hour in no time. The package is only sold as a SuperCrew with a 5.5-foot bed.

This year, Ford will put up for auction another one of its special vehicles to benefit the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) youth aviation programs.

The auction will take place at the annual EAA Gathering of Eagles on July 27. This time, the special vehicle that will be put on auction is none other than the F-150 Raptor, which is quite a departure for Ford as they often choose the Mustang to be sold off. Melvin Betancourt, Ford design manager, took inspiration from the famous Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighter jet when he designed the high-performance truck. At the same time, he highlighted the F-150 Raptor's unique style, capabilities, and design.

Not only does this F-150 Raptor look aggressively unique, it also has been given several tweaks on the inside. The truck's performance has been maximized, enabling the 3.5 liter twin-turbo, Whipple inter-cooled V6 engine to produce a total of 545 horsepower, that's 95 hp more than the standard model. Credit goes to the Ford Performance Team for all the work they have put into the Raptor from upgrading the suspension and the brakes, adding a roof mounted light bar to changing the wheels.
