2018 LA Auto Show: Porsche unveils track-only 911 GT2 RS Clubsport race version

German sports car maker Porsche is making its presence the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show felt further by unveiling to the global public its new Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport. If you’re familiar with the street-legal yet track-focused outgoing 991-generation of the 911 GT2 RS, then the 911 GT2 RS Clubsport is basically its racing version.

As racing version, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport can only be driven on the tracks, which means that this race car is the carmaker’s newest attempt to lure in racing enthusiasts. The 911 GT2 RS Clubsport can be raced at clubsport-style events, including those organized by Porsche Club of America, as well as at a possible future racing series organized by SRO.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport shouldn’t be mistaken for the no-cost optional Club Sport package offered for the 911 GT2 RS in Europe, but not in the United States. There are a number of differences, but we would focus only on the Clubsport model, not the package.

2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR is now the fastest road-legal sports car at the Nurburgring

The Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany has been considered as one of the ultimate tests of quickness and speed for carmakers and their cars like. Setting a new record on the so-called Green Hell is fairly a difficult feat to accomplish, but Porsche seems to be taking it real easy as its creation broke anew the record for the fastest road-legal sports car at the Nurburgring.

More than a year ago, on September 20, 2017, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991.2) underwent a challenge at the Nurburgring, as piloted by Porsche test driver and development engineer Lars Kern. Riding on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 'N2' tires and fitted with the Weissach Package, Porsche Motorsport bucket seat and harness on driver's side, this Porsche 911 GT2 RS managed to set a new record on the 20.6-km Nordschleife section of the Nurburgring, with a record lap time of six minutes and 47.3 seconds (6:47.3)

However, less than a year later on July 26, 2018, the record was broken by nearly three seconds. The culprit was a 2018 Lamborghini Aventador LP 770-4 Superveloce Jota as piloted by Italian Lamborghini factory driver Marco Marpelli. The time needed by the Aventador Superveloce Jota to complete a lap at the Nurburgring Nordschleife was six minutes and 44.97 seconds (6:44.97).

With 208 mph, Mark Webber claims that Porsche 911 GT2 RS has the fastest Nurburgring lap time

During the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Frank-Steffen Walliser said that the 7th generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS is “all about sevens” with its 700 PS or 690 horsepower (514 kilowatts) engine that lets it run from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in just 2.7 seconds, and reach a top speed of 209 miles per hour. But with regards to taking on the Nurburgring, he asked for some time to check it.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has been given a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, which is what makes it a really fast car. Now, going back to the Nurburgring, we might have already gained some evidence of the sub-seven lap time.

During an interview between Mark Webber and Driving.ca, the 911 GT2 RS is said to have set a new record at the Green Hell. The car was able to hit 208.7 miles per hour (336 kilometers per hour) on the ‘Ring, making it the fastest car that has ever sprinted there. The present official record holder is the Huracan Performante with a top speed of 189 miles per hour (304 kilometers per hour). There’s a huge difference as it is 19 miles per hour faster than the Performante.

2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS may be able to beat the 918 Spyder’s record at the Nurburgring

Over the weekend, a lot of fans were excited to witness the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. During the event, the company was giving hints that the nine-eleven will be going to the Nurburgring and that it is capable of completing a lap in under seven minutes.

In other words, they are trying to say that the 911 GT2 RS will be as fast as the 918 Spyder with a lap time of 6:57 – or it may be even faster, though this may not be a surprise to many. The 918 Spyder made that record back in September 2013, but has already been broken by the McLaren P1 LM at 6:43, which is the current title holder.

It may not seem like the road-going 911 can match the McLaren’s record, but if it hits or beats the much more expensive 918 Spyder, then that would be pretty impressive. Frank-Steffen Walliser, who is responsible for the Porsche GT program, said at Goodwood that “it’s all about sevens” and that this is the 911‘s seventh generation, with 700 PS (690 horsepower), but then he added that “it’s no seven at the Nurburgring”. Walliser even told us to watch out for it, but then he asked to be given some time first to check it.
