It looks like Porsche will be very busy throughout 2017 as it prepares for the eventual launch of its two new models this year – the 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS – and the likely arrival of the new Porsche Cayman GT4 RS.
A black 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 was spotted being driven at the famed Nurburgring in October 2016 without any disguise – giving us a good glimpse on the updated looks of the newest iteration of the car. Still in the 991 generation, this Porsche 911 GT3 features a tweaked front end with more imposing air intakes on the front bumper. Its front end also comes with a redesigned front spoiler and new LED indicators. A new diffuser is also found on the rear. Its rear wing and central twin exhausts remain the same, just as its slit grilles both on the front and back.
According to reports from Auto Express and AutoCar, power will come from an evolved version of the 4.0-liter flat six engine installed in the current Porsche 911 GT3 RS and 911 R. This evolved engine could produce at least around 500 hp or around 25 hp more than the 3.8-liter engine in the present GT3. Power will be sent to the wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mopar just brought a mammoth at the 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mopar is introducing a new crate engine that is like an elephant from hell. Dubbed as the “Hellephant” 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate Hemi engine, this new powerplant isn't just massive in size, but also in performance.
Hellephant is essentially a brand-new HEMI-engine that borrows its name from the massive land mammal – because of its large size as well as its ability to deliver huge power figures. As Mopar disclosed, the Hellephant 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine can deliver up to 1,000 hp of humongous output and up to 950 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is just around the corner and Chevrolet won't just sit idle. It intends to get impressive at the 2018 edition of the event by displaying three vintage vehicles that are powered by Chevrolet Performance’s newest crate engines.
Up for display at the Las Vegas Convention Center from October 30 to November 2, 2018 are: a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna powered by the all-new LT5 6.2-liter supercharged crate engine; a 1967 Chevrolet C/10 with the all-new ZZ6 EFI 5.7-liter V-8 crate engine; and a 1978 Chevrolet Silverado installed with the L96 6.0-liter V-8 crate engine.
The new LT5 6.2L supercharged crate engine in the 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna is derived from mill found under the hood of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Tuned to deliver 755 horsepower and 715 lb.-ft. of torque, the LT5 6.2-liter supercharged crate engine is Chevy’s most powerful production engine so far. Quite a number of carmakers are already reducing or even stopping their lineup of diesel-powered vehicles, as sparked by the diesel emissions scandal at the Volkswagen Group. Nonetheless, German premium automaker BMW seems not affected by backlash against diesel engines. Instead, BMW has just confirmed its commitment to diesel technology.
As quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, BMW AG board member for development Klaus Froehlich boasted of the carmaker’s accomplishments in the field of diesel technology. When BMW finally commences sales of the heavily anticipated 8-Series Coupe, it will offer the all-new flagship in two powerful engine variants – a petrol-powered biturbo 4.4 liter V8 unit and a diesel-fueled 3.0 liter biturbo inline six mill. Nonetheless, there are customers hoping that new BMW 8 Series would be offered with a V12 engine or a plug-in hybrid drive, but the German premium has no plans for those.
Carsten Groeber, vice-president of product management at BMW Group, was quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show as saying that a V12-powered 8 Series won't happen. The BMW 7 Series -- the M760Li xDrive in particular – is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 petrol engine that can provide 601 hp (448 kW) of output and 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque. This allows the M760Li xDrive to dash from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
Groeber noted that the V8 engine and the in-line six unit already allows for a perfect weight distribution with the new 8 Series. Since the V12 engine is a very heavy mill, it would destroy this weight distribution, particularly making the front too heavy. There have been no straight six-cylinder engines at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles since 2007, when Jeep launched the Wrangler JK generation. While Chrysler had been using straight six-cylinder engines since 1964, it eventually decided that it was already enough for this mill.
Just recently, rumors have been sprouting about the possibility of the rebirth of straight inline six-cylinder engines at Fiat Chrysler. These rumors also came up in 2017, but so far, no inline six-cylinder engines have been confirmed or even spied. The latest speculation was a result of a published report from Allpar, the same Web site that reported a similar rumor last year. When Bugatti Automobiles unveiled the new Bugatti Divo, it announced that this new performance monster would be powered by the carmaker’s eight-liter W16 engine that provides 1,500 PS of output. Boasting of 16 cylinders in W formation – hence its name – the W16 is the same source of power for the Bugatti Chiron. The hypercar before the Chiron, the Bugatti Veyron, also had a W16 as its core.
Now, a source of pride at Bugatti, the W16 engine inside the Divo and the Chiron will have no replacement. This was revealed to CarAdvice by no less than the chief executive of Bugatti Automobiles, Stephan Winkelmann. The hypercar maker’s top honcho said that that there would be no new 16-cylinder engine, and the W16 will be the last of its kind.
Make no mistake; the W16 is still alive and kicking. It has been so since it was first installed under the hood of the Bugatti Veyron in 2005 or 13 years ago. In the first iteration of the Veyron, this W16 engine was tuned to deliver 1,001 PS (736 kW or 987 hp) of max output and 1,250 Nm (922 lb.-ft.) of peak torque. One of the main reasons why the engine of your car keeps running despite of working in a high temperature environment is the installed cooling system. If not for this cooling system, the engine, its materials and lubricants can be damaged by high temperature.
The car’s cooling system isn't made up of a single application – it includes the radiator, a cooling fan, a water pump, coolant hoses and a thermostat. The coolant is circulated from the radiator, then around the engine and back to the radiator where it is cooled down anew. Modern vehicles typically have engines that employ Variable Valve Timing or VVT. Because of VVT, a car can achieve more optimal levels of performance and fuel efficiency at any engine speed. Before VVT was developed, the timing for opening and closing the engine valves was only optimized for a single engine speed. But since engine speeds vary, having a single timing means a decrease in both power and efficiency.
Now, VVT can vary the timing of opening and closing of engine valves for multiple engine speeds. When the engine speeds get higher, inlet valves open earlier to allow more air-fuel mixture to enter the cylinders. At normal driving conditions, VVT isn't activated. But when extra engine work is needed, VVT is activated. Then the information will be relayed from the VVT to the vehicle computer by the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) switch.
However, the VVT switch will wear out or fail. This is usually due to lack of basic maintenance. Once the VVT switch fails, the vehicle won't be able to receive any input from the ECU (engine computer unit) to vary the timing of the opening and closing of the valves according to the situation. In announcement just before the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Toyota disclosed that all-new Toyota Supra will stay faithful to its heritage by featuring an in-line, front-mounted six-cylinder engine as well as a rear-wheel drive system.
