RM Sotheby’s will auction off Porsche 911 R Steve McQueen tribute this February

On February 8, 2017, a special version of the Porsche 911 R limited edition – one that pays tribute to legendary actor Steve McQueen – would change hands. It is because this PTS (Paint to Sample) Porsche 911 R McQueen tribute would be placed under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s auction event in Paris, France on that very day.

Porsche first unveiled the 2017 Porsche 911 R at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show with only 991 units produced and made available. Typically – when the PTS option is not availed – the 911 R will feature a livery the same as the 1967 911 R and will come with GT3 foundations and engine. The latest 911 R is essentially a 911 GT3 except for the fact that its 4.0-liter engine is not paired to a PDK transmission and features no rear wing. From the front end to the rear bumpers, the 911 R and the 911 GT3 look the same. Elements like its side skirts, rear fenders, wheels, and the mirrors are the same for the two models.

However, the absence of the PDK transmission means that the new 911 R is fitted with a six-speed transmission. While the PDK transmission boasts of quicker shift times and smoother gear changes, many see the manual transmission as vital elements for a vehicle to be a true driver’s car.

2017 Porsche 911 R now on eBay for a whopping price of $1,250,000!

The 2017 Porsche 911 R was first unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Only 991 units will be produced for this line of 911 R and will be expected to cost more than the GT3 RS. The newest 911 R will come with the same 1967 911 R livery and will be using GT3 foundations and engine.

911 R is practically a GT3 except for the PDK transmission and rear wing. The two are nearly identical from the front down to its rear bumpers – which include the rear fenders, wheels, side skirts and even the mirrors. However one may think of the 2017 911 R to be similar to the GT3 but there are several differences. Instead of a wing, the 911 R engine lid has a conventional grille and a retractable spoiler taken from Carrera models as well as a redesigned front spoiler lip and rear underbody diffuser.

The 911 R is 50 kg lighter than the GT3 because of the material used for its front and rear hoods and fenders (made of carbon fiber) as well as its magnesium-made roof. The 911 R has a 4.0-liter engine that can produce 500 horsepower and 339 lb.-ft. of torque similar to the GT3 RS.

Ferrari and its beloved V8 engine have a lot of history together. This is the same engine that powers the Ferrari 488 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta). Now, Ferrari has unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show a new two-seater berlinetta that pays homage to its most powerful V8 mill so far – the new Ferrari F8 Tributo.

As it names clearly indicates, the Ferrari F8 Tributo is a tribute to its award-winning V8 engine. For three years in a row – 2016, 2017 and 2018 – Ferrari’s 3,902-cc V8 engine grabbed the “Best Engine” accolade in the International Engine of the Year awards. It was also named as the best engine of the last two decades in 2018.

In the Ferrari 488 GTB, which was unveiled four years ago at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, this 3,902 cc V8 turbocharged engine delivers an astonishing 670 cv of max output at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of peak torque in the seventh gear. This amount of power is sent to the rear wheels via a revised seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox derived from 458 Italia. This allows the 488 GTB to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 8.3 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 330 km/h or 205 mph.

German carmaker Volkswagen is now making the latest evolution of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI -- the new Golf GTI TCR. According to a report by Auto Express, the German sports carmaker has almost completed the new lightweight Porsche 718 Cayman T and is now putting the finishing touches on this new hardcore model.

In addition, the 718 Cayman T has seen its audio system removed from its cabin.

Overall, the 718 Cayman T would be around 20 kg lighter – in terms of kerbweight -- than the 718 Cayman. The VIN listings uncovered in July show that the 718 Cayman T will have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 3,649 lbs(1,655 kg), which is lighter than a manual-transmission Cayman S (3,670 lbs or 1,665 kg).

The only hybrids that automotive customers can get now from Porsche are its Panamera four-door saloon and its Cayenne sports utility vehicle. While the German sports car maker has confirmed that it would build a hybrid version of the Porsche 911 sports car, that won't happen in the near term. For those who can’t wait for Porsche to offer a 911 hybrid, Vonnen Performance is offering to convert your sports car into one.

Porsche’s main reason for not offering a hybrid version of the 911 is that the German company still doesn’t believe that the current battery technology is on par with its expectations for its venerated sports car. But with the rapid pace that the battery technology is growing, that could happen in the next few years. Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume had said that a 911 hybrid may arrive on the mid-cycle refresh of the 992 generation, which should happen by around 2022 or so.

Because Porsche won't do a 911 hybrid now, Vonnen Performance is offering to do so for 911 models built between 2012 and 2016. This also applies for other Porsche offerings currently not having a hybrid version, like the Boxster and the Cayman. The conversion kit and the entire setup would cost a Porsche owner around $75,000.

Mercedes-AMG only came out with the E43 lineup a few years ago, and already, the said model is ready to retire the badge so they could give way for the arrival of the electrified E53 family. It was first revealed at the beginning of the year during the Detroit Auto Show and came in two body styles, a coupe and a cabriolet. These were then followed by the reveal of the sedan and wagon flavours last month.

And according to the automaker, towards the end of the year, Mercedes will be selling the 2019 model year E53 Sedan in the United States, as a replacement of the E43 Sedan, and it will come along with the more upscale two-door E53 models. To make it clear, the name change is just a minor thing.

Ferrari recently revealed their latest project, dubbed the SP38, which is a one-off based on the 488 GTB that uses its chassis and running gear. This model was ordered from them by one of their most dedicated customers. This customer has allegedly already received the keys to the supercar at the Fiorano track, and the car was put through its paces just after its reveal.

Without a surprise, the car’s design comes from the Ferrari Design Center and reflects the vision of the customer, an enthusiast who has a real passion for racing. The result? A gorgeous supercar that expresses all the beauty and innovation inherent in Ferrari’s road cars - the car is equally as good on the road and on the track. As for the design, it gets most of its inspiration from the iconic F40, from which the three layer metallic red paint also draws impulse. This paint job marks a radical departure from the language aesthetic of the donor car. It also has a twin turbo, twin intercooler set-up.

When you give the front end a closer look, you will notice that it has a pair of unusual headlights, which were especially designed for the SP38. The mandatory daytime running lights have also been moved to the front bumper to allow for an extremely thin headlights form. As a result, this adds more character to the car.
