Opel will discontinue sales of Adam, Karl and Cascada by end of 2019

By the start of the new decade, customers won't be able to buy a new Opel Adam. Opel Karl and Opel Cascada won't also be available. This is because Opel will stop selling the Adam and Karl city cars as well as the Cascada compact convertible starting 2020 as the carmaker shifts its focus and comply with future emissions regulations.

According to Opel, it will not replace the current iterations of the Adam, Karl and Cascada when they reach the end of their life cycles. However, the Adam, Karl and Cascada will still be sold until the end of 2019. That gives customers planning to acquire any of these to-be-ditched models more than a year to make their plans a reality. Opel said the decision was meant to help the carmaker comply with future carbon dioxide emissions guidelines and to help it shift its focus to high volume segments.

This decision to discontinue the Adam, Karl and Cascada forms part of greater scheme at Opel -- the PACE! Plan. This PACE! Plan is essentially a new product offensive meant to meet the needs of customers while ensuring compliance with the stiff carbon dioxide guidelines that will take effect in 2020.

Opel begins production of 2017 Insignia Grand Sport

We can already smell success for Opel, even if it had only recently inked its marriage with the PSA Group. The Insignia, being one of Opel’s best selling cars of all time and having sold at least 940,000 units to date, will soon have a second-generation model out in the market.

The 2017 Insignia Grand Sport, one of the latest cars developed under General Motors, has finally started its production at the factory in Rüsselsheim, Germany. The assembly plant was updated with an investment of over €500 million ($540 million), allowing for the start of production of the sedan and wagon variants of the model.

The very first unit that was produced was a Grand Sport, painted white, and equipped with a turbodiesel 2.0-liter engine that can yield 170 horsepower. There’s a lot of pressure on this car as it has to live up to its predecessor, or better yet, prove that it is a better version of the original. It has big shoes to fill. After all, the first generation was crowned 2009 European Car of the Year.

Opel still on the planning stages for the production version of GT Concept

When Vauxhall-Opel unveiled its rear-wheel drive GT Concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March, it became an instant star, with auto journalists even praising the study for its overall design. However, whether Opel would be able to bring the GT Concept coupe into production remains a big question, as the carmaker seems to be stuck in the planning phase.

According to the Vauxhall-Opel chairman Karl-Thomas Neumann, the carmaker really wants to build the GT Concept, but hasn’t decided yet on the approach to take. He added that Vauxhall-Opel is not reviewing different directions that could be taken with regards to the GT Concept. However, the company needs to be fast, since – as it believes – the GT Concept’s design appeal could only last for two more years.

Neumann disclosed that the main problem lies with the platform that would underpin the production version of the GT Concept. As a rear-wheel drive model, the production version GT Concept has to be underpinned by a rear-wheel drive platform. It has to be since if the production version has to retain the elegant proportions of the concept. But there is a problem. As Neumann admitted after the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Vauxhall-Opel has no rear-wheel drive platform.

Opel Adam output reduced but not due to a drop in demand

The production of the Adam minicar and Corsa subcompact at Opel’s factory in Eisenach, Germany, will stop for several days in October 2013. Opel dismissed media reports that this decision was made due to a drop in demand. Opel explained that adjustments were made because of the winter season and the persistent economic issues that affect automakers in southern Europe.

Last Wednesday, an Opel spokesman told Automotive News Europe that Adam sales are "fine” and that the down days are primarily due to the Corsa production, a model in the later stages of its life cycle. Opel started to produce the Adam model in January. In the first seven months, it has assembled 41,000 units. Market researcher JATO Dynamics said that for the same period, 27,214 Adams were sold in Europe.

Opel is relying on the Adam model to reverse its decreasing sales. Opel hopes to attract sales by offering new products in growth segments. In line with this strategy, Opel has presented the Mokka small SUV and Cascada mid-sized convertible.

Opel will build the next generation Zafira minivan at PSA/Peugeot-Citroen's plant in Sochaux, France, Les Echos has reported. Opel is currently producing the Zafira at its Bochum site in Germany, which is set to be shut down by the end of 2014. Zafira’s production at Sochaux is part of an agreement inked in early 2012 between Opel and PSA, according to the French newspaper, citing unidentified sources privy to the matter.

General Motors invested EUR320 million ($418 million) in 2012 to acquire a 7 percent stake in PSA as part of an alliance that entails joint purchasing and vehicle development aimed at improving their results in Europe.

Les Echos added that the agreement could also entail Opel’s Zaragoza site in Spain building Citroen’s C3 Picasso small minivan. The site currently builds the Meriva small minivan, Corsa subcompact and Mokka small SUV.

General Motors Co. will commence building the Chevrolet Cruze at its Opel’s Gliwice site in Poland at the end of 2014, German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing an internal production plan as the source of the information. A spokesman for Chevrolet Europe, however, denied the report, saying that there is yet no decision as to where the next-generation Cruze will be produced.

GM has disclosed that it would shift output of the next-generation Cruze out of South Korea, where the current model is being produced. Reuters reported in January 2012 that GM’s management and workforce were discussing wether to transfer production of the Cruze from South Korea to Poland to lower losses at Opel. South Korean unions welcomed the news negatively and threatened to "wage a war."

The Gliwice site could be a good site to produce Chevrolet’s products since it is the only low-cost Opel plant in Europe. It also produces the Cruze sibling, the Opel Astra. Both models could be produced on one assembly line that would require only a little additional investment. The Cruze is Chevrolet's best-selling model in Europe, with sales up 5 percent to 12,441 units in the first four months of 2012, according to data from JATO Dynamics.

Opel will commence kit production of its Corsa subcompact car in Belarus for sale in Russia and nearby markets. Opel, along with joint-venture partner Unison JSC, plans to assemble 7,000 cars in 2014 at Unison's Minsk site in Belarus. The partners will assemble the Corsa subcompact from semi-knockdown kits sourced from Opel's site in Germany and Spain.

Assembling vehicles in this manner allows carmakers to skirt import duties without incurring much costs. The Belarus site will only have to perform a little work since much of the production process was already carried out at Opel’s manufacturing sites in Eisenach, Germany, and in Zaragoza, Spain.

The production agreement lasts until 2017, with an option to include more vehicle models. In a statement, Opel's manufacturing chief Peter Thom remarked that with the production of the Corsa in Belarus, the carmaker is implementing a strategy of building vehicles where they are planned to be sold.

Opel it will halt building its Astra compact hatchback at its Ruesselsheim site in Germany in 2015 to pave way for the production of the Zafira minivan. Opel is currently building the Zafira at its Bochum site that is set for closure by the end of 2014. Opel’s Gliwice plant in Poland, meanwhile, will hike Astra output to offset the lost volume, according to Opel spokesman Ulrich Weber.

He described the moves as a normal transition from one model to the other and a process that will “evolve step by step." According to Handelsblatt German business daily, the Ruesselsheim site will halt producing the Astra before the second half of 2015. The Ruesselsheim site built around 50,000 Astras in 2012, similar to the number of Zafiras produced in Bochum, Weber said.

The Astra is targeted against the Volkswagen Golf compact. Opel will produce the next-generation Astra in Gliwice and Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom, starting in 2015. Ellesmere Port workers have agreed to wage cuts as part of a labor agreement that lasts until early 2020s.The site, operated by Opel sister-company Vauxhall, employs 2,122 people and builds three types of Astra variants and has an annual capacity of 187,000 vehicles.

Opel will produce the next generation of its Mokka subcompact crossover in Europe rather than in Korea where the existing model is built, Thomas Sedran, Opel's strategy chief, confirmed. He said that Opel is presently assessing if other models may be assembled in Europe and Korea. Its considerations include the Korea-made Antara medium SUV and Europe-made Agila small minivan.

So far, the company hasn’t decided on the locations yet. He also pointed out the opportunities for rebadged Opel models to be built in China.

He said that Opel is studying a plan to offer the Cascada mid-sized convertible under parent General Motors' Buick brand. The convertible was introduced at the recently held Geneva auto show.

Opel is considering shifting some production of its Astra compact car to Poland from one of its plants in Germany, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports, citing source privy to the works council and labor unions. According to the report, Opel is planning to shift an annual production of 10,000 Astra cars from its Ruesselsheim factory in Germany to Gliwice site in southern Poland.

Opel currently builds 30,000 Astra cars annually, as well as the Insignia mid-sized model, Ruesselsheim. With the transfer, Opel would effectively reduce the capacity of the Ruesselsheim plant to 20,000 cars annually. Opel is under heavy pressure from parent General Motors Co. to reduce costs and excess capacity to cope with falling sales and massive losses in Europe.

GM’s European units, which consist of the Opel and Vauxhall brands, posted $747 million in losses before interest and tax in 2011. In the first quarter, Opel/Vauxhall car sales dipped 15.8 percent to 227,590 in the countries that are members of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, according to industry body ACEA.

Dan Akerson, chief executive of General Motors Co., is under intense pressure to balance the company’s record profits with the losses that its European operations continue to incur. For the first three quarters of the 2011 fiscal year, the company has recorded profits more than any year since around 1987. 

But its fourth quarter results could be deeply affected by Akerson’s decision to keep the company’s Opel unit, which is the biggest contributor to GM Europe’s S14.7 billion in operating losses since 1999. Analysts expect GM to post a quarterly profit lowest since it emerged from bankruptcy in 2009.

With that in mind, Akerson might be forced to implement production and job cuts at Opel just to keep GM posting profits. GM is expected to reveal in its fourth quarter report the depth of pension shortages and the continued worsening of sales in South America, where low-cost imports are posing a great threat to market leaders.

Opel will be manufacturing its new-generation Corsa model in Spain by 2013, GM Europe President Nick Reilly told Spanish newspaper Expansion. By that time, Opel will resume full capacity at its Zaragoza plant in northern Spain. He further stated that it is GM's plan for the facility to be kept at full capacity.

Moreover, Reilly stated that he expects GM Europe to reach breakeven in 2011 and achieve a profit in 2012, compared with a $637 million loss in 2010.

Additionally, he disclosed that Opel's orders are "still very strong" just like the rest of the carmakers. Even thought the market is "weak," there are no indications that the company will have a "bigger crisis," Reilly added. The workers at Opel are pushing GM to transfer additional production to Europe by manufacturing the next-generation of several models there.

In an interview with Automotive News Europe, Jaap Timmer, president of Euroda, Opel's European dealership association, admitted that the company "could have lost some opportunities in the past, but not recently."

He said that Opel and Vauxhall continues to benefit from the Insignia being named 2009 European Car of the Year. He also said that the new Astra has been surpassing expectations.

Talks are ongoing for a labor proposal to save an Opel plant in Antwerp, Belgium, from being shut down, according to an Opel spokesman. A source said that the proposal anticipates finding a private investor who could potentially cooperate with Opel in producing convertible models.

In late January, CEO Nick Reilly said that it had plans for its Antwerp plant to close by June or July, unless an alternative could be found through negotiations with the unions.

Reilly said that GM has made several attempts to find another way but it had failed to do so. Back then, Reilly had said that the company is losing money and that there has to be action.

The first pre-production Model Year 2012 Opel Ampera rolled off the assembly line at General Motors Co.'s Warren, Mich. plant. In the coming months, more pre-production Amperas will be built. But before you run off to your dealerships, take note that these are real world test vehicles.These cars won't be sold and they will not make their way to the dealers.

Testing of these Amperas will enable the automotive producer to finalize the software development stage, as well as make final adjustments to the vehicle's controls. Aside from that, GM will use the pre-production models to make fine tweaks to all aspects of the car. Some of the vehicles will be even used for safety tests.

Andrew Farah, Vehicle Chief Engineer for the Ampera, said that GM is "right on target" for its goal to produce this car for Europe later next year. He said that much work is still to be accomplished but that driving an Ampera off its pre-production line is a "great accomplishment for the teams here and in Europe."

After confirming in 2017 that its midsize pickup would be coming back to the United States, Ford took the wraps off the 2019 Ranger early last year. It featured an all-new design especially made for the US, and is a bit different from the Rangers sold overseas. Now, Ford is finally commencing the production of the 2019 Ranger at its newly transformed Michigan Assembly Plant in Detroit.

To mark the kickoff of the production of the new Ford Ranger, the carmaker had special celebrations at its Michigan Assembly Plant. The celebrations essentially mark the rebirth of the Ranger, which is slated to return to the US early 2019 following an eight-year hiatus. Likewise, the celebrations mark the rebirth of the plant that has been a witness to the ups and downs of the American auto industry in the past six decades.

Invited in the celebrations aren’t just leaders from Ford, but also from United Auto Workers. A large of number of the plant’s workforce – numbering more than 3,000 employees – was also present. These employees, as well as media members and others, were given an opportunity to ride in the new Ford Ranger a custom-built, off-road course in the plant’s parking lot.

SEAT SA is commencing production of an all-new car at its Martorell facilities in Spain. However, its plant won't be assembling a new SEAT car. The Spanish carmaker is now assembling the next generation of Audi’s small city car – the new 2019 Audi A1.

The sight of SEAT producing Audi vehicles isn't surprising as both carmakers are members of the larger Volkswagen Group. In addition, the A1 isn't the Audi vehicle produced at SEAT’s Martorrel site. In the middle of 2011, the VW Group assigned the SEAT facility to produce the Audi Q3 luxury subcompact crossover. Since then until July 2018, the Martorrel site had been producing the previous generation of the Audi Q3 and total Spanish production of the subcompact crossover reached nearly 800,000 units.

When the second generation of the Audi Q3 was unveiled, it was decided that the production of the subcompact crossover will be moved from Martorell to the Gyor facilities in Hungary. On the other hand, the previous generation of the A1 was assembled in Brussels. The idle manufacturing capacity at Martorrel left by the Audi Q3 might have prompted the VW Group to transfer the production of the second generation from Brussels to Martorell.

When Ford unveiled its new Ford GT nearly four years ago at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the supercar was received very well even through the US carmaker only disclosed a few details. When the company started to produce the Ford GT, one thing was very apparent – the demand for the supercar greatly outstrips the supply. Two years into the supercar’s production, Ford is building more units than previously earmarked.

Even before it started production of the Ford GT, the US carmaker had said only 1,000 units of the supercar will be built. Ford had set the annual production pace for the Ford GT at 250 units every year. This means that supercar would have a production run that would last for around four years.

But when the US carmaker started accepting orders for the Ford GT, the total number of applicants quickly grew to more than 6,500. This number was just for the 2016 iteration of the supercar. Unfortunately, Ford can only accommodate 1,000 of the applicants, which means that the Ford GT is practically sold out.

The new Porsche Taycan is considered as revolutionary at the German sports car maker as the upcoming model is its first all-electric vehicle. Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Board responsible for Finance and IT at Porsche, remarked that starting 2025, more than 50 percent of the Porsche models delivered are expected to be electrified. While this will require substantial investments in development, production, and staff training, Porsche believes that the carmaker will still be able to achieve a target profit margin of at least 15 percent.

After teasing last month a brand new concept that would preview its next generation models, Opel has finally lifted the veil off its newest study – the new Opel GT X Experimental Concept. Essentially a five-door all-electric compact sports utility vehicle with the charm of a coupe, the Opel GT X Experimental Concept provides a glimpse on how will the carmaker’s future models will look like.

Opel chose a compact SUV to represent its vision for its future vehicles as SUVs are currently the hottest-selling units on the market. Underpinned by a lightweight architecture, the Opel GT X Experimental Concept has dimensions of 4,063 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,528 mm in height (including antenna), with 2,625 mm of wheelbase.

Staying faithful to the promise of the PACE! plan to offer an electrified version of each Opel model by 2024, the new GT X Experimental is designed as a fully electric compact SUV powered by a 50 kWh compact next-gen lithium-ion battery that can be charged with inductive charging. In terms of autonomous driving technology, the GT X Experimental offers Level 3 functions. This means that the concept can drive itself on all aspect, but the driver has to intervene when requested to.
