Aznom Automotive Atulux turns this Ram 1500 into a personal cafe

Nowadays, building luxurious pickup trucks isn’t unusual for automakers. One prime example is the Ford F-150 Limited that costs $62,000. But now, we welcome the arrival of the Atulux, short for All Terrain Utility Luxury by Italian automaker Aznom Automotive. For instance, the previous generation Ram 1500 pickup was converted into an opulent SUV. Though the SUV only fits two passengers in the back, they are surrounded with a posh cabin and they get a Nespresso coffee machine and a milk frother that rises from the center console, making it perfect for those who are addicted to caffeine.

Measuring nearly six meters (19.6 feet) long, the Atuluz still looks the same except that it has almost doubled in size. The extra room allowed the company to install an additional sunroof as well as a more accommodating passenger compartment. To keep it looking like a Ram 1500, Atulux maintains a lot of its design cues like the crosshair grille. At the back, the company fits a tiny truck that boasts a look similar to the recent Mercedes Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept.

Mechanically, the SUV keeps the Ram’s original 5.7 liter V8 that gives an output of 396 horsepower (295 kilowatts) here. When converting, Aznom reinforces the frame and installs bigger brakes, alongside eight piston calipers in front. An air suspension also provides a supple ride, and additional sound proofing to give the passengers peace and silence.

Of course, the Ram 1500 Rebel Black Edition isn’t available yet at your nearest dealership as it is was just unveiled formally at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (also known to many as Detroit Auto Show).

The American pickup war got even tougher as the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel outscored rivals such as the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Nissan Titan in the latest test conducted by Consumer Reports. According to the well-known magazine, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel received the first spot among full-size light-duty pickups.

First of all, the pickup made by Chrysler impressed with its average fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which is far better than its rivals. Consumer Reports said that the fuel economy returned by the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is comparable with a midsized SUV.

The full-size Ram 1500 pickup is bound to receive a massive facelift in spring 2017, although Chrysler Group has no concrete plans to replace steel body panels with aluminum until a full redesign after 2020, industry sources told Reuters.

Two sources privy with the Chrysler’s plans told Reuters that the carmaker is planning to go with steel when it updates the big Ram pickup in 2017 – while its rivals GM and Ford shifting to lighter aluminum body panels this fall and in the fall of 2018.

By doing so, Chrysler would not have to risk alienating commercial users, many of which believe that steel is more rugged and durable than aluminum. Chrysler could also forego the need to spend money just to convert steel parts to aluminum.

Nearly half of the initial dealer orders for the 2014 Ram 1500 pickup are of the EcoDiesel variant. Over the Feb. 7-10 weekend -- when first order books were opened to dealers for the 3.0-liter diesel engine -- they ordered over 8,000 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels, which represents almost half of expected production of the full-sized pickup in March, according to Ram brand director Bob Hegbloom, adding that around 400 of them were already sold to customers.

He noted that the percentage of initial diesel orders by dealers is around double or triple what brand executives had expected. He remarked that in the next few months, presold orders will be given production priority so as to keep customer wait times down.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is powered by a diesel engine built by VM Motori SpA that provides 240 hp and 420 pounds-feet of torque. It is paired in the Ram 1500 to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The engine's exhaust is treated with urea to cut emissions of oxides of nitrogen that cause smog.

Chrysler Group dealers have ordered over 8,000 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickups in the Feb.7-10 period – the first weekend that the vehicles were available to order. The number already makes up almost half of Ram 1500’s typical monthly production. Included in the order for the period were over 400 diesel-powered Ram 1500s that had already been sold to customers – which is around five times the normal percentage of sold orders for a typical pre-launch vehicle, disclosed Bob Hegbloom, director of the Ram brand.

"This just helps to solidify in our minds that we did the right thing with this truck," Hegbloom told Automotive News.  Chrysler started producing the Ram 1500s powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine late January at its Warren Assembly site in suburban Detroit, with deliveries to dealers expected in the next three weeks.

Hegbloom remarked that the percentage of initial diesel orders by dealers is around double or triple what brand executives had expected. He said that while demand is likely to slow down as dealers receive unsold inventory, presold orders in coming months will be prioritized for production to keep customer wait times down.

Chrysler Group will commence building its first 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel trucks this January, months later than initially expected. Chrysler is planning to start production on January 21 of around 1,000 pre-spec versions -- units not based on dealer orders -- powered by the 3.0-liter diesels from Fiat-owned VM Motori on Jan. 21, a person privy with the matter told Automotive News.

The first batch of 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be distributed to dealers in February, when they are expected to start taking customer orders.  According to Chrysler, EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500 would enter full production in the first quarter. In 2013, Ram officials had said that the diesel-powered light-duty pickup would be available for sale in the third quarter of the year.

Likewise, Ram brand head Reid Bigland said in 2013 that the EcoDiesel trucks would account for up to one-third of the brand's annual light-duty pickup sales when they go on sale.
