It’s a given that Sports Utility Vehicle could never take on a supercar. A Mercedes G-Class for instance, or even a Mitsubishi Outlander, would find it hard to outperform a supercar like the Ferrari. All that is about to change with the Range Rover Sport SVR from Land Rover.
Driven by Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver Ho-Pin Tung, this performance SUV set a new unofficial record at Tianmen Road. Located in the Hunan Province in China, the Tianmen Mountain Road is well-known for its 99 turns, making it one of the best ways to test man and machine.
The record for completing this 11.3-kilometers (7-mile) ascent was in 2016 by a Ferrari 458 Italia clocking in 10 minutes and 31 seconds. The Nurburgring Nordschleife has long been considered as a benchmark for performance in the automotive world. Because of its complicated course, carmakers and tuners have been trying to prove the worth of their creation by driving through the so-called Green Hell. Now, Mercedes-AMG could try to prove the performance of its Project One hypercar by challenging the Nurburgring.
In an interview with Autocar, Mercedes-AMG chief executive Tobias Moers remarked that it was "reasonable to speculate" that the new Project One hypercar would challenge the lap time record at the fabled Nurburgring lap time record. Right now, the lap time record for the Nurburgring for a production car is being held by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991) driven by Larns Kern. With a lap time of six minutes 47.30 seconds, this Porsche 911 GT2 RS had set a new record at this challenging course.
Interestingly, Moers is looking beyond the lap time record by a production car at Nurburgring. The AMG Project One will also try to challenge the overall lap time record at the Green Hell. 2017 was definitely a great year for Porsche as the automaker was able to break their sales record in the United States. Overall, they delivered a total of 55,420 vehicles, which stands for a 2.1 percent increase over the previous year.
Of course, you are probably wondering which model contributed the most to the total. And to answer your question, that would be the Macan. In fact, that nameplate alone sold 21,429 units, which is a huge improvement over 2016, which posted a total of 19,332 units delivered. Next in line is the Cayenne, which had 13,203 deliveries. The third most popular car would be the 911, which sold 6,731 units.

BMW has teased us a couple of times about its record breaking attempt, and finally, they have decided to post the extended video of the M5’s actual eight hour drift that they have documented.
It was Johan Schwartz, an instructor of BMW’s Performance Driving School, who was behind the wheels of the performance sedan. He drove this as an attempt to improve his previous performance record from back in 2013, when he took the previous generation M5 for a drift, leaving with a record of 51.27 miles (82.51 kilometers).
At that time, he was able to cover 322.5 laps of one of the course at the BMW Performance Center located in South Carolina. Volkswagen proves just how big of an automotive company it is as it is celebrating a very important milestone on the last day of the year. It is set to roll out its 6 millionth car on Sunday, the 31st of December. Most of the cars that were built this year were familiar nameplates, but of course, new members of the family like the T-Roc, Tiguan Allspace, and Atlas also played an important role as their production numbers have increased significantly as well. It should be mentioned though that for this calculation, the Arteon has been excluded because it is considered as the CC’s successor.
As mentioned earlier, it was the more popular models like the Polo, Golf, Jetta and Passat that took up the majority of the percentage of cars produced this year. Alongside those models, the Santana that is available in several versions in China, had an impact too.

BMW revealed that the new M5 (F90) has taken on the Shanghai International Circuit and has shown its exceptional driving properties by setting a lap record. Driven by Bruno Spengler, the new M5 managed to clock in a time of 2:22.828 minutes.
Spengler, who had won the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) back in 2012, managed to break the record by five seconds. Making the record lap even more astonishing is the fact that the four-door saloon is a production version and was driven without any changes made for the racetrack. Not surprising, especially for BMW enthusiasts, as the M series follow the principle of a road-going car being capable of going through the racing track any time.
With the perfect mix of athleticism and luxury, the new M5 is powered by the 4.4-liter V8 engine that is fitted with the M TwinPower Turbo technology. Given that the engine has undergone changes by none other than the engineers at M, it can deliver output of 441 kW (600 hp) with peak torque of 750 Nm. Thus compared to the previous models, the new model shows that performance has indeed increased significantly. Paired to the engine is the Steptronic 8-speed transmission that comes with Drivelogic. Thus the new M5 can go from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Putting in the M-specific suspension ensures that driving dynamics is optimized. Many automakers seem to always have the Nurburgring in the back of their heads when they build new cars. And a lot of them seem to be obsessed about making an attempt to break the record. Now, Lamborghini has decided to join the rest of these guys. It is not the first time for them to take their cars to the Green Hell. In fact, the Huracan Performante once took home the record around the Ring, before the Porsche 911 GT2 RS took over with a total of 6 minutes 47.3 seconds time.
Next spring, the Italian automaker plans to head back to the Green Hell, but with a different model this time - the Lamborghini Urus -- as it attempts to be the fastest SUV to lap the Nurburgring. At the time of this writing, it is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio that holds the record time with 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds.
However, if you could remember, some people doubted its performance saying that the video had been edited to make it look like it finished that soon. We never doubted the outstanding performance of the new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, with its 6.2 liter supercharged LT5 V8 engine that enables it to produce up to 755 horsepower (563 kilowatts) and 715 pound-feet (969 Newton-metres) of torque. Moreover, it has a top speed of 210 miles per hour (337 kilometers per hour). However, there is one question that a lot of us are asking, and that’s how fast can it perform around the Green Hell, and will it break records?
Just like any other automaker out there, Chevy also has plans of taking the hardcore Corvette ZR1 to the Nurburgring to try and beat the performance of other vehicles. The problem is that there are few dry days left to attempt a record run on the track. Having said that, the best thing they could do is wait until next season. Road & Track also said that Chevy has already used up their 2017 run on the Camaro ZL1 1LE, and the said model was able to leave the track with a lap time of 7 minutes 16.04 seconds.
Going back to the new Corvette ZR1, it will be even faster than the one that lapped the Nurburgring this year. It was fitted with a set of super sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts quickly, and an optional package they call the “High Wing”. This package gives it 60 percent more downforce over the Z06. With all these new features, Chevy believes that it can lap the ‘Ring in just under seven minutes. Last April, the new Honda Civic Type R made a new record for the current front wheel drive, by going around the Nurburgring and finishing a lap with a time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. But today, Toyota thinks that they have what it takes to beat the Honda Civic Type R’s record, even without a true hot hatchback in their lineup. Rather, it is the C-HR that recently made its debut at the 2017 SEMA Show, with 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) which they think could make a new record.
They say that if the head of the tuning company behind Toyota’s R-Tuned C-HR, Dan Gardner were to decide, the C-HR would already be at the track. In fact, the Japanese automaker believes that it is the “world’s quickest SUV”, and we’re not doubting them. True enough, it has been proven to be faster than the Lamborghini Aventador, the Porsche 911 GT3 and many other supercars as it only took 1 minute 25.22 seconds to go around the Willow Springs Raceway.
Gardner said to Autocar that this model was actually built for SEMA, and so far, the automaker has announced no plans for it. He also described it to be the real deal, and that it is his dream to take the super-SUV to the Nordschleife. Bugatti is no longer the automaker that carries the fastest street legal production model after the Chiron was overtaken by no other than the Koenigsegg Agera RS. The new champion posted an average speed of 277.9 miles per hour (444.6 kilometers per hour) after doing two runs going in opposite directions as part of the Guinness’ requirements. It was Niklas Lilja, Koenigsegg’s factory driver, who was behind the Agera’s wheel when he broke the record at Pahrump, Nevada. All the figures were recorded and verified by Racelogic during the run last Saturday.
A couple of months ago, Koenigsegg was already talking about taking the crown from the Bugatti, which had Chiron’s 0-240-0 record. Drive Tribe had provided some of the details of the record-breaking feat. It reported that Agera RS was in Nevada, where it was put through a number of tests on a closed section of a road somewhere between Las Vegas and Pahrump. To make this possible, the Swedish automaker had to get permission from the Nevada Department of Transportation so they could close the particular road for the high-speed run.
In 2010, an unrestricted Bugatti Veyron Super Sport made a record of 267.81 miles per hour (431 kilometers per hour) at Volkswagen Group’s Ehra-Lessien test track. It was driven by Pierre Henri Raphanel, who was the automaker’s official test driver. It wasn’t long after that moment that a road-legal production model, which was the Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition, was launched. Despite being less powerful than its predecessor, the latest Opel Insignia GSi proved it can run quicker by twelve seconds at the Green Hell. While not everyone was expecting this from the new sedan’s 260hp (193kW) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque, the new GSi proved itself to be much lighter and a more performance-focused version of the former OPC variant.
The new Opel Insignia GSi offers an updated version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine which is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and runs with an all-wheel drive system. To test its performance, Opel brought the sports sedan to Nurburgring with the help of Volker Strycek, a former DTM racecar driver and Director at Performance Cars and Motor Sport.
The result was beyond exceptional after the new GSi was able to outperform the old OPC variant on the tracks. The original Audi TT was first produced back in April 1998, at a factory located in Gyor, Hungary. And after many years, the 500,000th unit has rolled off the production line -- an important milestone for the company. The 500,000th unit is a TTS Coupe finished in Viper Green, and is currently on its way to its owner in the United Kingdom. Across three generations, Audi has produced over a million units of the TT.
The TTS Coupe is a beefed-up version of the TT Coupe. Under its hood is a turbocharged 1,984 cc engine that gives out as much as 286 horsepower at 5,300-6,200 rpm and 380 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 5,200 rpm. In just 4.7 seconds, the roadster can accelerate from 0-100 kilometers per hour before continuing on to its top speed on 250 km/h. The engine comes standard with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that gives power to the all-wheel drive. The TTS is definitely one fast car.

Just a few days ago, the guys behind Alfa Romeo were celebrating after getting a hold of the crown for being the fastest production SUV to lap the Nurburgring, after the Stelvio beat the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S’ record.
Like many records set before it, there are those who question its veracity. In this case, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio took on the Green Hell, and finished in exactly 7 minutes 51.7 seconds. But we have been hearing things that there were a couple of issues in the video’s editing.
The website Bridge to Gantry, was the first one to throw doubt into the record. They pointed out a number of editing issues that could prove it to be fake. This video contains the full 7 minutes 51.7 seconds run of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. If you watch the video closely, the car appears to pass through the same location several times throughout the video. The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is now the fastest, undefeated king of the ring for having settled a new record at the Green Hell - at least with regards to rear wheel drive road legal cars lately. The objective was to set a new record in Nurburgring-Nordschleife’s 20.6 km (12.8m) course for less than seven minutes and five seconds. Porsche instead proved it can do so much better by beating the record and being faster by 17.7 seconds.
Porsche factory test drivers Lars Kern from Germany and Nick Tandy of Great Britain made the new record on September 20 for beating the previous 6:52.01 minute log. Using two different Porsche 911s, both drivers took off, each making 5 laps all in less than six minutes and fifty seconds. Eventually, German driver Lars Kern made the fastest lap by reaching the finish line with a very impressive 6:47.3 recorded minutes. Kern runs at an average speed of 114.4 miles per hour (184.11 kph).
Kern’s excellent performance aboard the 911 GT2 RS defies the Porsche 918 Spyder by nearly ten seconds. This happened four years after Marc Lieb, also from Porsche, achieved a lap record of six minutes and fifty seven seconds on September 4th, 2013. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has won its spot as the record holder for the Nurburgring when it comes to road-legal production cars. However, the Stuttgart based company has just lost the SUV crown to Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio Quadrifoglio. It was Fabio Francia who drove the SUV around the Green Hell, and luckily, he did well on the challenging corners of the track. In case you don’t know, Francia had taken the Giulia Quadrifoglio to the ‘Ring, and is responsible for its record breaking lap time of 7 minutes 32 seconds.
Though the Stelvio’s record is far from the Giulia’s, and cannot match that of its more agile sedan sibling, its 7 minutes 51.7 seconds record is still quite impressive. Especially considering the fact that former record holders like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S took another 8 seconds to go around the ‘Ring. Furthermore, when Alfa Romeo introduced the Stelvio Quadrifoglio at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, they said that the model would need 7:59 seconds to lap the Nurburgring. Surprisingly, the production version is even quicker than they expected.
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the brand’s first ever SUV, is 2.0 inches longer and 8.9 inches taller than the Giulia, with 2.5 inches more ground clearance. Under the hood is the same 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, borrowed from the Giulia. It has 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. As for performance, the company claims that it can do the 60 mile per hour sprint in 5.4 seconds, before continuing to a top speed of 144 miles per hour. These numbers are quite impressive compared to other 2.0 liter powered SUVs. A couple of months ago, we wrote about the group of Viper ACR enthusiasts from America who raised enough money to fly the vehicle out to Germany so it could lap the Green Hell. Initially, their goal was to hit a sub-seven-minute goal, but they were a little shy of this by finishing the Nurburgring in 7:01.3 last week. They still got to break the existing record of 7:03.45, making the ACR the fastest street legal Dodge Viper ever that hit the Nurburgring.
Road & Track was in Germany that time to witness this record breaking act by the Viper ACR, and they also witnessed the car go through some serious hiccups. The first incident was from a seized differential that occurred earlier in the week, which was then followed by a high-speed tire failure after the second lap, which led to a serious crash that happened right after the Viper ACR finished the lap. Luckily, both drivers came out of the car with no injuries. If you would like to see the record-setting lap, you could always check out the video online.
So far, the Viper ACR is the fifth fastest car that has gone around the Nurburgring, at 7:01.3, being just behind the Lamborghini Aventador SV with a 6:59.73 lap time in 2015. But it actually did pretty well compared to the Nissan GT-R Nismo that has a lap time of 7:08.68, as well as the new Mercedes-AMG GT R that has a 7:10.92 time. But before this, it was also the Gen 5 Viper that held the record for the fastest 6-speed manual transmission in just 9.35 seconds at 157 miles per hour (252 kilometers per hour). When it went through the Carolina Dragway, this race focused model was able to cover the distance in just three passes, and it took only 2.28 seconds at 162 miles per hour (260 kilometers per hour).

Alpina is getting ready to introduce its new Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo four-door production sedan in the United Kingdom. Derived from the BMW 7 Series, the Alpina B7 is powered by a huge twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine with twin-turbo charging, gasoline direct injection and Valvetronic technologies. Its specially developed twin-scroll turbochargers are able to provide up to 1.2 bar of boost pressure with minimal inertia.
When it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, Alpina announced that the B7 could deliver 600 hp (608 PS) of max output between 5,750 rpm and 6,250 rpm, as well as 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque available from 3,000 rpm. Even at just 2,000 rpm, this V8 twin-turbo engine already delivers 494 lb.-ft. of torque. The Nurburgring is the one track that many automakers want to hold a record of, because only the best of the best do. This time, a group of extraordinary passionate people are trying their best to do everything that they can to make the Viper reclaim its record as the fastest production car to lap the Nurburgring. This is because the Conner Assembly plant in Detroit will official close down in August, and these guys just want to give it the best send off. In a few months, the SRT Viper, which was once Dodge’s front-line war horse for 25 years, will say goodbye.
The company itself does not have plans of sending the Viper to the Nurburgring after doing it twice already, which is why you could tell how passionate the individuals are. In fact, they started a group on Facebook called “The Viper Ring Record Run Powered by Kumho and co-sponsored by Prefix”. They’re raising funds so they could send not one, but two Viper ACRs, from the United States to Germany. In order to do this, they need about $150,000 to $200,000 aside from the sponsorships they have got. To do this, they group started a GoFundMe account earlier this January, and as of now, they have already earned $177,642, which means that the attempt to break records at the Green Hell is a go.
To keep their fans and backers informed, they post updates. Over the weekend, a lot of fans were excited to witness the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. During the event, the company was giving hints that the nine-eleven will be going to the Nurburgring and that it is capable of completing a lap in under seven minutes.
In other words, they are trying to say that the 911 GT2 RS will be as fast as the 918 Spyder with a lap time of 6:57 – or it may be even faster, though this may not be a surprise to many. The 918 Spyder made that record back in September 2013, but has already been broken by the McLaren P1 LM at 6:43, which is the current title holder.
It may not seem like the road-going 911 can match the McLaren’s record, but if it hits or beats the much more expensive 918 Spyder, then that would be pretty impressive. Frank-Steffen Walliser, who is responsible for the Porsche GT program, said at Goodwood that “it’s all about sevens” and that this is the 911‘s seventh generation, with 700 PS (690 horsepower), but then he added that “it’s no seven at the Nurburgring”.
