Renault wants to appeal business customers with the new Espace

The next one sees a Renault Espace, he or she will be surprised with its looks. After all, Renault threw away the boxy look of the Espace minivan and endowed it with crossover styling – all to make it more appealing than before. Philippe Brunet, head of Renault’s D-segment business, remarked that the market for large family vans is shrinking, adding that new Espace’s main market will be fleet customers.

"The crossover design is what our customers want," Brunet said. Renault also added an upscale version of the Espance with the Initiale Paris badge. The French carmaker has made a EUR420-million investment in its Douai site for the output of the new Espace and the successors of the Scenic compact minivan and Laguna midize sedan.

According to Brunet, the Espace was given with crossover styling since that segment accounts for between 10 percent and 15 percent of the car segment in Europe and is still growing.

Paris Motor Show Preview: 2015 Renault Espace becomes a crossover

The Espace is Renault’s well-known large multi-purpose-vehicle (MPV) but things are about to change as the French manufacturer has just unveiled the new generation. What’s new? Well, the Espace was reinvented and became a crossover in order to take you and your family almost anywhere.

Clearly inspired by the Initiale Paris Concept unveiled back in 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2015 Renault Espace arrives with a brand new design dominated by fluid lines both inside and outside.

According to Renault, the Espace will be offered in five- and seven-seat versions and will feature smart interior modularity. More details will be revealed next week at the 2014 Paris Motor Show when the new vehicle will be unveiled by Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault Group.

Exclusive: Next-generation Renault Espace will indeed become a crossover

All of you folks love the Renault Espace but it appears that the French manufacturer wants to change the next-generation model and it will transform it into a crossover. If yesterday it was just a rumor, this was confirmed at the Frankfurt Motor Show by Mr. Axel Breun a.k.a. Director Design of Concept & Showcar at Renault.

Talking about the Initiale Paris Concept car that was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, Breun said that the new vehicle that previews the next-generation Espace shows elements borrowed from an SUV, a crossover but also from a sedan.

And it will indeed, become a crossover. In the concept form, the Initiale Paris continues Renault’s “live cycle” design strategy started by the DeZir. All the Renault concept cars are compared with a petal in the design daisy.

The replacement for the Espace large minivan will an SUV-styled crossover, according to Renault design chief, Laurens van den Acker. Moreover, he added that the Espace successor will combine minivan and SUV characteristics as it needs to be more relevant on the market. Apparently, this move is made because people are more attracted by SUVs and high driving positions and these customers are switching from minivans and hatchbacks to crossover models.

For those who don’t know, the first-generation Espace opened the minivan segment back in 1984 but times changed since then and the current model is not quite a best seller. Renault managed to sell only 3,014 units of the Espace in Europe in the first four months of 2013 and sales are down 35 percent from the same period last year.

The French manufacturer will show a concept version of the new Espace at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and the new model is expected to come with high-end features. According to Renault concept car director, Axel Breun, the new Espace will not have a brutal design as the cars we see today.
