Rolls-Royce has no plans to create a new SUV smaller than the Cullinan

Rolls-Royce is experiencing overwhelming sales success with its first sports utility vehicle, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. In fact, the ultra-luxurious SUV is surpassing the carmaker’s sales expectations. At this point, some people are already expecting the brand to release a smaller version of the Cullinan. But to their dismay, Rolls-Royce has already shut down the possibility of creating a smaller SUV that would complement the Cullinan.

Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos told AutoCar in an interview that the carmaker has already completed its model lineup when it launched the new Cullinan SUV. The ultra-luxurious utility is the fifth and latest model of the carmaker, joining the Phantom, Ghost, Wraith and Dawn in Rolls-Royce lineup. The remarkable success of the Cullinan is bringing smiles to the top management at Rolls-Royce. According to Muller-Otvos said early sales of the Cullinan have exceeded expectations, calling customer reaction to the luxury SUV as brilliant.

Nonetheless, the British carmaker isn't keen to add a new model, especially a smaller SUV, into its current lineup. Muller-Otvos remarked that Rolls-Royce is already pleased with its lineup, noting that there is no demand for a new SUV model among the brand’s ‘ultra-luxury’ buyers. He said that Rolls-Royce strategy is to maintain its high-end price position -- not moving the brand into lower-price segments just for the sake of getting higher sales.

2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV has arrived, priced from $325,000

Three years ago, Rolls-Royce first mentioned the Cullinan, which came to be the most anticipated SUV in the world. It is the opulent brand’s very first high riding model. However, the automaker actually describes it as “an all-terrain high-bodied car.”

Of course, the Rolls-Royce of SUVs is meant to attract rich customers who are looking for a potent, very luxurious, and practical SUV. The automaker’s plan is to attract a younger generation of successful people who are right in the middle of the so-called experience economy.

The Cullinan features an opening hatch, called The Clasp. This in inspired by an era when luggage would be positioned outside of the car to create more space for the passengers. It is easily accessible with only one touch of the key fob button, opening up the 560 liters (19.77 cubic feet) of cargo space. When the rear seats are down, there will be a total of 1930 liters (68.15 cubic feet).

Rolls-Royce finally confirms Cullinan nameplate for its first-ever SUV

Finally, another automaker is getting on the SUV bandwagon. About to reveal its very first SUV is Rolls-Royce, which stated that “the wait is almost over” as it prepares to introduce Goodwood’s “High Sided Vehicle”.

BMW Group’s high end marque also shared plans of carrying over the model’s codename by deciding to baptize the new model as “Cullinan”. In fact, Cullinan was the working title about a couple of months ago, and all of a sudden, it is ready to make history - being Rolls Royce’s first-ever SUV.

The name of the car originated from Cullinan Diamond, which is the largest gem quality rough diamond ever found, with a weight of 3,106.75 carats (621.35g), according to Wikipedia. It was in1905 when this was discovered in South Africa’s Magaliesberg Mountains and was then named after the mine’s chairman, Thomas Cullinan.

Rolls-Royce regulars will witness private debut of Cullinan SUV

Automotive News announced that the loyal customers of Rolls-Royce will be among the first to see the new Cullinan SUV that will be unwrapped behind closed doors. Meanwhile, the general public and the press will have to wait until the latter part of the summer before they can see the much anticipated model for themselves.

If you were not aware, Cullinan is actually just a codename for the automaker’s SUV project. And even if the production version will have a different name, the automaker has yet to inform us what it is. Another thing we noticed is that the automaker refers to the vehicle as a “High Sided Vehicle” instead of an “SUV”.

As you can see in the photos, the Cullinan gets a boxier and more chiseled body, where the front end appears to be very similar to the Phantom. This includes the rectangular LED taillights and the thin intakes underneath them.

The uber-luxurious sports utility vehicle market is definitely growing quickly, Bentley has its own Bentayga and Rolls-Royce is now prepping the Cullinan. And now, it seems that Land Rover wants a piece of the action by possibly expanding their lineup with a SUV that will sit on top of the current range topper, the Range Rover SV Autobiography.

The juicy details are not really that crystal clear at this point in time due to the fact that it is still a question mark if the Land Rover "SUV" will be a completely different model or just another luxurious trim for the Range Rover. By far, the most expensive and premium Land Rover model was the Range Rover Holland and Holland, which costs around £180,000 in United Kingdom and $244,500 in United States.

Unfortunately, the SUV is no longer available as it was only released for a limited time only. The Tata Motors-owned company does not have a vehicle to rival the Bentley Bentayga as of the moment, but this could possibly change in the following years as this uber-premium range topper is being planned. Furthermore, a Mercedes-Maybach marked SUV will supposedly be produced in the next years to come.

Usually, it is up to resourceful spy photographers to take clear pictures of vehicle prototypes, especially those that have aroused a lot of interest. The same is true for Project Cullinan, which aims to create an overly luxurious SUV for Rolls-Royce. Dubbed as the Rolls-Royce’s fighter against the Bentley Bentayga, the Cullinan SUV has been spied so many times. This time around, however, Rolls-Royce took the luxury of showing the Cullinan SUV to the public, albeit in camouflaged form.

Don’t get us wrong. This Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV isn’t the final version. It is rather a prototype that is currently being tested, modified and refined to suit the market that Rolls-Royce is aiming for. However, we could surmise that this is – at most – the design of the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It’s highly likely that Rolls-Royce is now just setting its focus on improving the SUV’s inner workings.

Rolls-Royce has dubbed the Cullinan as an “‘all-terrain, high-sided vehicle," and the prototype featured in the pictures reveals that it could be. The aim is to create a final vehicle that could go ‘Effortless … Everywhere.’ According to Rolls-Royce, this is a full development prototype, which will soon enough be tested in public. To determine whether its description fits, Rolls-Royce is taking the development prototype to various locations around the world as part of a challenging testing program. One location would be Arctic Circle, where the Cullinan will be tested for its cold weather durability and traction. Another location will be the Middle East – which will be visited sometime in 2017 – where the Cullinan will be tested for high temperature durability and its ability to tackle challenging desert conditions. After all, its moniker “Cullinan” – which is its codename and is not yet final – is derived from the name of one of the largest rough diamonds ever.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is planning to develop an SUV, confirming hints made by chief executive Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes earlier this year. The carmaker announced the plans through letters delivered by white-gloved chauffeurs in Phantoms in New York City. While the new vehicle is an SUV, Rolls-Royce won’t call it so and dubs it an “Everywhere Vehicle.”

It even has its own hashtag: #EffortlessEverywhere. With the announcement, Rolls-Royce would join a throng of luxury carmakers already offer SUVs like Porsche (Cayenne), Mercedes-Benz (G-Wagon), Land Rover (Range Rover), and Bentley (Bentayga).

This means that Ferrari remains the only major luxury carmaker without an SUV in its current or future lineup. While Rolls-Royce has yet to announce when it would launch the “Everywhere Vehicle,” it said it had decided to build a luxury off-roader after consulting its clients.

Rolls-Royce is finally joining the SUV market and is planning to offer the vehicle to the market at the end of 2018. The SUV – codenamed "Cullinan" after the world's largest diamond – will have a starting price of EUR275,000 and will be limited to just 2,000 examples, according to a report by Autobild.

Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes told Automotive News in an interview on Jan. 9 that the British ultra-luxury brand is mulling whether a SUV would be suitable into its lineup.

He was quoted as saying at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show that there was a market for SUVs from an ultraluxury segment. Ultra-luxury brands like Bentley are developing SUVs in order to capture affluent buyers in markets like China, Russia and the Middle East.

Aston Martin’s Lagonda luxury marque is confirming its plans to launch an all-new crossover in the near future by unveiling a new concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Dubbed as the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept, this show car essentially serves as a preview to the brand’s upcoming crossover.

According to Lagonda, the All-Terrain Concept is an ultra-stylish, luxurious, all-electric emission-free vehicle. This marks a new step into the brand’s goal of becoming the first luxury electric automotive brand in the world. The All-Terrain Concept basically builds on the designs and materials in the Lagonda Vision Concept that was unveiled last year. While the Vision Concept was design to be driven purely on the road, the All-Terrain Concept pushes the boundary by showing that a luxurious drive could also done off the road.

While the exterior of the Lagonda Vision Concept was inspired by the Concorde, the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept, on the other hand, was initially influenced world of the super yacht. This allowed the design team at Lagonda to give the All-Terrain Concept a futuristic surfacing as well as forms and shapes seemingly created by “planetary forces of gravity fields.”

More than a month ago since introducing the BMW X7 to the global public, the German premium carmaker has unveiled its flagship SUV to the North American audience at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. This is quite ironic since the BMW X7 is built at the carmaker’s Spartanburg manufacturing site in South Carolina.

There is quite no need to tell all the details about the new BMW X7. Nonetheless, the X7 that will soon arrive in the United States will be available in two guises, powered only by petrol engines. As what BMW has revealed, the X7 SUV will be offered either as the X7 xDrive40i or the X7 xDrive50i. The BMW X7 xDrive40i has a core in the persona of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six engine. This mill is tuned to deliver 335 hp (250 kW) of max output as well as 330 lb.-ft. (447 Nm). This power is enough for the xDrive40i to accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 5.8 seconds.

On the other hand, BMW is offering a more powerful version of the X7 SUV, which would be an ideal fit for customers who wanted to squeeze more performance from the flagship. The BMW X7 xDrive50i will be powered by a newly developed twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that can deliver 456 hp (340 kW) of max motive power as well as 479 lb.-ft. (649 Nm) of peak torque. This engine can send the X7 xDrive50i sprinting from nil to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, or around 0.6 seconds quicker than the X7 xDrive40i.

The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show is playing host to a number of debuts, especially SUVs. Hyundai won't let itself be left out as the South Korean carmaker unveiled its own SUV flagship at the LA event – the all-new 2020 Hyundai Palisade mid-size SUV. Set to be built at the carmaker’s manufacturing plant in Ulsan, South Korea, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade is scheduled to arrive dealerships across the United States in the summer of 2019.

Hyundai’s new Palisade could be the brand’s answer to the growing demand for larger SUVs. It does offer a seven-seat SUV in the guise of the Hyundai Santa Fe XL. However, the Hyundai Santa Fe XL is basically just a slightly larger version of the Santa Fe five-seat SUV. Some customers might find other similarly sized SUVs from other carmakers as more spacious.

To answer the call, Hyundai create the new Palisade, which it says offers enough room to accommodate eight occupants and their cargo. Furthermore, the Palisade promises to deliver a host of technologies and offer great levels of safety.

Can a Dacia Duster be compared with a Ford Mustang? It would be difficult to do so as these vehicles compete in different categories and segments, have different price points and different target markets. Moreover, in terms of power and performance, the Duster couldn’t be compared to a Mustang.

Nonetheless, there is one person who believes that Dacia’s budget SUV is similar to the Ford’s legendary pony car. This person is the chief of design for Group Renault -- Laurens van den Acker. Dacia, the Romanian subsidiary of Group Renault, has been building the Duster since 2009, while Ford has been producing the Mustang since 1965. Despite the Duster being just a decade old, van den Acker told Autocar that the SUV is similar to the Mustang in a sense that it is already an iconic model with an identity stronger than the brand.

Group Renault’s design chief believes that the identity of the Duster as a model is already larger than Dacia as a brand. This is similar to the iconic pony car – the Mustang as a model has a stronger identity than Ford as a brand. The Duster is iconic to Dacia just as the Mustang is iconic for Ford.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are increasingly the mobility of choice for many people. For short drives around the city or urban areas, plug-in hybrid can be switched to all-electric mode for a zero-emission driving experience. However, current plug-in hybrids can only offer up to 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric range.

Mercedes-Benz is hoping to break the status quo by not just surpassing the 50-km barrier, but also offering up to 100 km (62 miles) in pure electric range. Quite a number of plug-in hybrids still offer 30 km of electric range, while there is an increasing number of models that are engineered to reach 50 km.

As divulged by Ola Kallenius, head of Daimler group research and Mercedes-Benz cars development, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV will be the first plug-in hybrid to offer a 100-km range, as per WLTP cycle.

In case you missed it, Ferrari is joining the world of crossovers. As SUV and crossovers continue to rule the demand in the automotive world, the Italian sports car maker saw that it is in its best interest to join the game with the new Ferrari Purosangue.

While this new crossover might officially arrive in a matter of years, this new Ferrari SUV might already be past the planning stage – if SupercarsNews is to be believed. SupercarsNews uploaded a video on its YouTube account with the description “Ferrari Purosangue spy spotted! The new SUV Ferrari mule on the road.” The video shows a camouflaged crossover entering the field of view of the camera. Then, the camouflaged vehicle comes to a full stop, but only for a second. Perhaps, its driver had no inkling that a spy photographer was waiting for an ambush. Then the camouflaged vehicle reverses to hide from the camera.

No thanks to the description, by SupercarsNews persons who would have seen the video would quickly believe that this test mule was an early prototype of the Ferrari Purosangue. However, the Ferrari vehicle on the video might not be a test mule for the Ferrari Purosangue crossover. Instead, it could be an elevated test mule for the Ferrari GTC4Lusso. Since this test mule has a high ground clearance, it might have been mistaken for the Purosangue. As to why the test mule for the GTC4Lusso has a higher ground elevation, there is no clear reason yet.

BMW will launch the fourth generation of its X5 SUV to the global market in March 2019. Its high-performance version, the X5 M, would follow but that would take some time. As there would be customers who want their new X5 looks sportier than usual, BMW is allowing them to dress up their SUVs in M style through M Performance Parts.

Just in time for the global launch of the new X5 (05), BMW will be offering an extensive range of M Performance Parts, as available through the Original BMW Accessories program. Just like any other M Performance Parts, the ones that will be available for the new X5 were developed through racing expertise of BMW M. All of these M Performance Parts have a functional purpose, such as enhancing the X5’s aerodynamics or contributing to its already intelligent lightweight concept.

A number of M Performance Parts for the new X5 are made from carbon fiber, giving the SUV a more striking appearance inspired by motor racing. Most of these CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) components feature a final high-gloss polish for further depth effect.

Just recently, BMW introduced its much-anticipated flagship SUV -- the all-new BMW X7 – after more than four years of wait. Now that it is finally arriving, high-performance customers are wondering how many years they would have to wait before the German premium carmaker creates a BMW X7 M.

The reality is that there is yet no clear sign that BMW would create an M version of the newly unveiled X7 SUV. While the X7 M is a possibility that can’t be discount, it might be hard to imagine how the high-performance version of BMW’s flagship SUV would look like. Good thing though, an automotive graphic artist is here to help with his own rendering of the BMW X7 M.

X-Tomi Design has been known for his renderings of still non-existent versions of vehicles that are in the market or have just been unveiled. His graphic works are usually realistic, to the point that it seems that his renderings were actual official images released by carmakers. X-Tomi latest comes in form of the BMW X7 M, which would be the high-performance version of the newly unveiled X7.

The distance a vehicle can travel with a full tank of gas or a single full charge is important to any driver. This is why most carmakers reveal the range of their vehicle offerings. With the first example of the I-Pace already delivered to its retail customer, Jaguar has released its MPGe estimates for its electric SUV. Sad to say, but the Jaguar I-Pace doesn’t measure to its EV competitors in terms of electric range.

When Jaguar said that the new I-Pace electric SUV would be getting a large battery as its core, expectations were high for its electric range – until it release its estimated MPGe figures. MPGe stands for miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), as how the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) converts the power consumed by an EV into a term that is familiar to most Americans. MGPe is essentially how far an electric car can travel on the amount of energy that is equivalent to one gallon of gasoline.

According to Jaguar, the new I-Pace returns 80 MPGe city, 72 MPGe highway and 76 MPGe combined. This means that the Jaguar I-Pace can travel up to 234 miles in all-electric range in a single charge from its 90-kWh battery. That may sound impressive, but wait until its electric range is compared against other EVs, in particular the Tesla Model X that is considered as its main rival as both are electric SUVs.
