Sales of diesel cars continue to drop in Europe, as per International Energy Agency

It was just several months ago when European commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska called diesel-powered cars as the technology of the past, even giving a prediction that these vehicles will completely disappear in the near future. While it is still too early to say whether her statement will come a true or not, but carmakers are facing a harsh reality for now – public demand for diesel cars are dropping in a fast pace in Europe.

Public sentiment towards diesel cars in Europe has been dropping for the past years, with more and more consumers in the region looking to purchase cleaner, more environment-friendly vehicles. While Europe has been considered as the largest market for diesel cars since the 1980s, but the hunger for such vehicles has been waning lately. It was really evident from how carmakers across Europe has been shying away from diesel cars and pursuing electrification. Nonetheless, the latest available figures on sales of diesel cars are a better proof.

According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), there is really a huge decline in the demand for diesel cars. Since its statement is backed by numbers, it is really quite hard to deny the fact. As per IEA, diesel cars hold a large chunk of the automotive market in Europe, accounting for 42.5 percent of all sales as of start of 2017. But a year after at the start of 2018, the market share of diesel cars in Europe had shrunk to 36.5 percent. Overall during the period, carmakers manage to just move 3.12 million diesel cars to customers in Europe, for a huge decline of 16 percent, according to IEA.

Porsche officially drops diesel engines from its lineup

If you’re planning to buy a new Porsche unit powered by a diesel engine, better do it as soon as possible. This is because the German sports car maker has decided it has nothing to do with diesel engines anymore, no thanks to ever decreasing demand for such mills. Yes, Porsche won't be offering diesel-powered vehicles anymore.

Seemingly, gone were the days when diesel engines go toe-to-toe against gasoline mills for supremacy. Now, more and more carmakers are trying to shy away from diesel engines, but not because of gasoline powerplants. In the past few years, there has been a growing trend and increasing demand for electrified and all-electric products. On the other hand, the demand for diesel engines has been dropping.

Porsche’s decision to drop its diesel lineup could be traced back to the so-called Dieselgate scandal. This scandal involved the emissions of diesel engines employed by brands of the Volkswagen Group. This forced the group to re-focus its strategy and plan for a lineup laden with electrified – including all-electric – vehicles. Interestingly, Porsche is part of the VW Group.

Porsche purges last diesel engines in lineup amid cultural shift to electrification

To jump onto the next step of going greener, Porsche announced that they will be getting rid of the last few vehicles that have diesel-fueled engines in their lineup, so that they could focus on electrifying their vehicles. In fact, European countries will no longer offer the Panamera and Macan with the oil burning mills. The first Macan S Diesel and Panamera 4S Diesel initially came out nine years ago.

In an interview between Autocar and Porsche, the automaker cited a cultural shift as the reason for the decision. There was also a regulatory reason behind the choice as there has been a software update that has recently been involved in an “ongoing consultation with the authorities”.

This was decided after the automaker chose not to launch the new version of its Cayenne SUV with a diesel engine. In fact, the Cayenne was actually the very first Porsche to offer diesel power back in 2009.

Emission issues now affecting Mercedes-Benz E350d models, sales stopped in Germany

Emissions, emissions, emissions. We have been hearing a lot about this issue lately, and we know that automakers dread it too, as it is the worst thing that could happen right now for their business.

This time, the victim of emissions would be Mercedes-Benz and now they have to halt the production of their E350d in Germany. This is because they have to implement some changes to the 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel so it produces less NOx emissions. The company's plan is too fit in a selective catalytic reduction system with more surface area, maximizing the company's AdBlue after-treatment fluid, but Mercedes will still inject the same amount of AdBlue in the system.

Autocar said that it will take a few weeks for Mercedes to do the engine tweaks. Currently, the 3.0 liter V6 produces 258 horsepower (192 kilowatts) and 457 pound feet (620 Newton metres) of torque. The company makes it clear that the only affected engines are the ones on sale in the market since May.

It appears that the Dieselgate scandal masterminded and perpetrated by Volkswagen AG isn’t limited with company, but also has affected, albeit indirectly, its fellow carmakers from Germany. In fact, automotive customers in the United States might not be able to buy new diesel models from German premium carmaker Mercedes-Benz (2017 model year).

Mercedes-Benz’ parent Daimler AG disclosed that it had dropped plans to have Mercedes’ diesel cars and engines certified in the US. Sans any certification, Mercedes-Benz cannot sell its diesel-powered 2017 premium vehicles in the country. Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran told Automotive News that the company is putting on hold the certification process for its diesel passenger cars in the US, as part of a review of the carmaker’s portfolio offerings.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t decided if it would totally exit from the American passenger diesel market, even though it would not be selling 2017 models in the region. However, given the current situation, an exodus from the American passenger diesel market in the future by Mercedes-Benz won’t be a surprise.

There may be bad news for Mercedes-Benz drivers in the United States who love its diesel offerings and have been waiting for the latest iteration of their favorite diesel models to arrive in the country. Well, it is just that Mercedes is now mulling to stop selling the diesel versions of its premium luxury lineup in the US, no thanks to declining demand for its offerings and to the stricter implementation of emissions regulations and rules in the country.

This comes after Mercedes dropped plans to offer the diesel-powered Mercedes C300d 4Matic to the United States. Mercedes C300d 4Matic was supposed to commence sales of the Mercedes-Benz C300d 4Matic in the US months ago and had postponed those plans. Supposed to be the US version equivalent of the C250d 4Matic that is being sold in Europe, the US-spec C300d 4Matic was previewed June 2015 with a near-production prototype at the Pikes Peak, where it posted a new record for a series production car with a course time of 11.37 minutes.

Mercedes said at the time that the drive C300d could return 42 mpg on the highway and could be the first diesel model that would undercut the American ULEV 70 emissions limits. The C300d 4Matic was powered by a turbodiesel four-cylinder, 2.1-liter engine delivering 201 hp (150 kW) of output from 3,800 rpm and 369 pound-feet (500 Nm) of torque available at 1,600 rpm.

Ford is having a good harvest so far this year for its Focus ST in the United Kingdom, especially after the carmaker introduced new petrol and diesel powertrains. In fact, Ford has already sold nearly 6,700 diesel and petrol versions of the Focus ST in the UK so far this year, a far cry from the 2,460 units sold in the entire duration of last year.

The new 185PS diesel Focus ST accounts for around 45 percent of demand in the UK while the 250PS EcoBoost petrol model generated 55 percent of sales in the country. Ford has now sold over 50,000 units of the Focus ST since 2002, when it introduced the ST170 in the market.

For the next model year, the diesel version of the Focus ST will be available with a six-speed dual-clutch PowerShift transmission, the deliveries of which are scheduled in early 2016. With this new transmission, the diesel Focus ST can now be driven either in full automatic mode or in the manual mode through the paddle mounted behind the steering wheel.

Mazda has commenced sales of its CX-3 compact crossover in Japan, powered by a 1.5-liter diesel engine. But for the United States, the engine choice will be a gasoline one, according to Mazda chief engineer Michio Tomiyama. Mazda expects to sell around 150,000 CX-3s annually, 36,000 units of them from Japan.

The Japanese price for the CX-3 starts at JPY2.376 million ($19,970) and tops out at JPY3.024 million ($25,410). Mazda chief executive Masamichi Kogai said the CX-3 will be introduced in Australia by end of March this year, and then in Europe. The compact crossover will be launched in the US in mid-2015.

According to Kogai, Mazda only offers a diesel package in Japan since the brand’s other diesel offerings are hot commodities in the country. In fact, around 75 percent of CX-5 buyers in Japan picked diesel version, and Mazda sold over half of the 79,222 clean diesel passenger vehicles delivered in the country in 2014.

Nearly half of the initial dealer orders for the 2014 Ram 1500 pickup are of the EcoDiesel variant. Over the Feb. 7-10 weekend -- when first order books were opened to dealers for the 3.0-liter diesel engine -- they ordered over 8,000 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels, which represents almost half of expected production of the full-sized pickup in March, according to Ram brand director Bob Hegbloom, adding that around 400 of them were already sold to customers.

He noted that the percentage of initial diesel orders by dealers is around double or triple what brand executives had expected. He remarked that in the next few months, presold orders will be given production priority so as to keep customer wait times down.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is powered by a diesel engine built by VM Motori SpA that provides 240 hp and 420 pounds-feet of torque. It is paired in the Ram 1500 to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The engine's exhaust is treated with urea to cut emissions of oxides of nitrogen that cause smog.

Sales of Nissan’s top-seller in Europe, the Micra subcompact, have been affected by its move to launch the model without a diesel powertrain and to produce the car in India. Market researcher JATO Dynamics said that in the first half, sales in Europe of the new Micra dropped by 9.5%.

Nissan’s No.1-seller car is now the Quashqai, with a 7% increase in sales in the first half. Nissan launched the Micra in Europe late last year. 2011 is expected to be a good year for hatchback sales because typically, a product line receives a huge boost in the first full year of being available on the market.

Carlos Da Silva, an analyst for IHS Automotive, said that the Micra's high-efficient gasoline engine has low CO2 emissions that are comparable to that of diesel engines, according to Autonews.

The diesel exodus in Europe continues. Years ago, carmakers have been in a sweeping race to offer more diesel-powered vehicles in the continent, which hunger for such transports seems unending. Mitsubishi has already halted sales of new diesel car in the United Kingdom. It has also stopped sales of diesel-powered cars in Germany. The only diesel vehicles that would remain in Mitsubishi’s lineup are its pickups, but that would only be for the short term. Diesel offerings accounted up to 30 percent of the Japanese carmaker’s sales in Europe in 2017.

The Opel Grandland X indeed has French roots, but we know that it also has taken some German lessons, especially now that Opel is positioned underneath PSA’s umbrella. Without a surprise, people from Rüsselsheim had just made an announcement regarding this.

Grandland X will now be powered by a 1.5 liter four cylinder turbodiesel that can be ordered from Peugeot 3008-based Grandland X, giving an output of 130 horsepower (96 kilowatts) and a maximum torque of 300 Newton metres (221 pound feet) which can be accessed from 1,750 rpm.

This engine could be paired with either of the two transmissions: a standard six speed manual transmission, that lets it burn 4.1 to 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, or an eight speed automatic transmission that burns a little less, at 3.9 to 4.0 liters for every 100 kilometers. The PSA-sourced mill now replaces the former 1.6 liter diesel, which offered less power (120 horsepower / 88 kilowatts), and used up more fuel (by 4 percent) too.

Aside from that, after 70 years of being in the industry, with their very first model, the 356 that dates back to 1948, the automaker will give employees an additional €356 to celebrate this model. Similar to last year, the automaker then gave their employees a yearly bonus of €9,111 to celebrate the 911.

To be fair to everyone, the company is not giving the same amount of bonus to every person in the company. The amount each person will be getting is based on their working hours as well as the amount of time they had been working in Porsche.

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the new X350d 4Matic X-Class at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It was back in July 2017 when the brand first premiered its pickup which utilizes the chassis, as well as certain body panels, of the Nissan Navara.
