To jump onto the next step of going greener, Porsche announced that they will be getting rid of the last few vehicles that have diesel-fueled engines in their lineup, so that they could focus on electrifying their vehicles. In fact, European countries will no longer offer the Panamera and Macan with the oil burning mills. The first Macan S Diesel and Panamera 4S Diesel initially came out nine years ago.
In an interview between Autocar and Porsche, the automaker cited a cultural shift as the reason for the decision. There was also a regulatory reason behind the choice as there has been a software update that has recently been involved in an “ongoing consultation with the authorities”.
This was decided after the automaker chose not to launch the new version of its Cayenne SUV with a diesel engine. It appears that the Dieselgate scandal masterminded and perpetrated by Volkswagen AG isn’t limited with company, but also has affected, albeit indirectly, its fellow carmakers from Germany. Mercedes-Benz’ parent Daimler AG disclosed that it had dropped plans to have Mercedes’ diesel cars and engines certified in the US. Sans any certification, Mercedes-Benz cannot sell its diesel-powered 2017 premium vehicles in the country. Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran told Automotive News that the company is putting on hold the certification process for its diesel passenger cars in the US, as part of a review of the carmaker’s portfolio offerings.
Mercedes-Benz hasn’t decided if it would totally exit from the American passenger diesel market, even though it would not be selling 2017 models in the region. It appears that the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine developed by Ford is getting more and more popular as one in five all-new vehicles sold in Europe in the first half of 2014 are equipped with the mentioned powerplant. According to Ford, compared to the first six months of 2013 it sold 15 percent more vehicles equipped with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol engine.
In the first half of 2014, 47 percent of the B-Max models sold were equipped with the 1.0-liter engine. Meanwhile, in the same period, 33 percent of Focus sales and 30 percent of Fiesta sales left the dealerships with a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine.
For those who don’t know, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is available on the Ford Fiesta, EcoSport, C-Max and Grand C-Max, Tourneo Connect, Grand Tourneo Connect, Transit Connect and Transit Courier. Chrysler Group has halted production of the 1.4-liter engine this month due to the sluggish sales of the Fiat 500 coupes and cabriolets -- the subcompact that the engine runs – in the United States. This was recently revealed by Tom Zimmerman, the plant's unit chairman for UAW Local 723.
At least 100 of around 400 hourly workers at the company's Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance Plant in Dundee, Mich., were laid off earlier this month, apparently as a result of the production halt of the 1.4-liter engine.
Zimmerman further stated that there is still no information as to when the employees could get their jobs back. Sales of Nissan’s top-seller in Europe, the Micra subcompact, have been affected by its move to launch the model without a diesel powertrain and to produce the car in India. Market researcher JATO Dynamics said that in the first half, sales in Europe of the new Micra dropped by 9.5%.
Nissan’s No.1-seller car is now the Quashqai, with a 7% increase in sales in the first half. Nissan launched the Micra in Europe late last year. 2011 is expected to be a good year for hatchback sales because typically, a product line receives a huge boost in the first full year of being available on the market.

Up for display at the Las Vegas Convention Center from October 30 to November 2, 2018 are: a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna powered by the all-new LT5 6.2-liter supercharged crate engine; a 1967 Chevrolet C/10 with the all-new ZZ6 EFI 5.7-liter V-8 crate engine; and a 1978 Chevrolet Silverado installed with the L96 6.0-liter V-8 crate engine.
The new LT5 6.2L supercharged crate engine in the 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna is derived from mill found under the hood of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Tuned to deliver 755 horsepower and 715 lb.-ft. of torque, the LT5 6.2-liter supercharged crate engine is Chevy’s most powerful production engine so far. Quite a number of carmakers are already reducing or even stopping their lineup of diesel-powered vehicles, as sparked by the diesel emissions scandal at the Volkswagen Group. When BMW finally commences sales of the heavily anticipated 8-Series Coupe, it will offer the all-new flagship in two powerful engine variants – a petrol-powered biturbo 4.4 liter V8 unit and a diesel-fueled 3.0 liter biturbo inline six mill. Nonetheless, there are customers hoping that new BMW 8 Series would be offered with a V12 engine or a plug-in hybrid drive, but the German premium has no plans for those.
Carsten Groeber, vice-president of product management at BMW Group, was quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show as saying that a V12-powered 8 Series won't happen. The BMW 7 Series -- the M760Li xDrive in particular – is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 petrol engine that can provide 601 hp (448 kW) of output and 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque. This allows the M760Li xDrive to dash from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
Groeber noted that the V8 engine and the in-line six unit already allows for a perfect weight distribution with the new 8 Series. Since the V12 engine is a very heavy mill, it would destroy this weight distribution, particularly making the front too heavy. When Bugatti Automobiles unveiled the new Bugatti Divo, it announced that this new performance monster would be powered by the carmaker’s eight-liter W16 engine that provides 1,500 PS of output. Boasting of 16 cylinders in W formation – hence its name – the W16 is the same source of power for the Bugatti Chiron. The hypercar before the Chiron, the Bugatti Veyron, also had a W16 as its core.
Now, a source of pride at Bugatti, the W16 engine inside the Divo and the Chiron will have no replacement. This was revealed to CarAdvice by no less than the chief executive of Bugatti Automobiles, Stephan Winkelmann. The hypercar maker’s top honcho said that that there would be no new 16-cylinder engine, and the W16 will be the last of its kind.
Make no mistake; the W16 is still alive and kicking. It has been so since it was first installed under the hood of the Bugatti Veyron in 2005 or 13 years ago. In the first iteration of the Veyron, this W16 engine was tuned to deliver 1,001 PS (736 kW or 987 hp) of max output and 1,250 Nm (922 lb.-ft.) of peak torque.
