There’s no stopping the increasing popularity of electric vehicles across the globe. Nevertheless, a lot of people are still into internal combustion and do not want that to become extinct. However, if Porsche is right, the future of performance could possibly be more silent. Klaus Zellner, Porsche’s President and CEO of North America spoke to Green Car Reports in Los Angeles and he said that hybrid technologies have brought more new buyers to Porsche showrooms more than any other models they have sold.

As more automakers expand their lineup of plug-in hybrids, it’s likely that sales of plug-ins will soon exceed that of full-electric vehicles in Europe. In 2014, there were more deliveries of the full-electric units than plug-ins. Industry association ACEA said that last year, 58,244 battery-powered vehicles were sold in the EU and EFTA markets, standing for a 73% increase.
Meanwhile, the volume for plug-ins and extended-range vehicles increased by 26% to 39,547 units. The best-selling EV in 2014 in Europe was the Nissan Leaf, with a 38% increase from the year before to 15,134 units, according to a JATO Dynamics report.
The top-selling plug-in hybrid in the region was the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with a 141% increase in sales to 19,855 units. Norway was the biggest market for EVs last year, with a 130% increase in sales to 18,090. The combined sales of the Ford Fusion Energi and Ford C-MAX Energi in the United States in October 2013 beat the sales of the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid in the period, allowing the US carmaker to take the top spot in plug-in hybrid vehicle sales for the month. The combined October sales of the Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi reached 2,179, representing around 34 percent of the total plug-in hybrid market.
Sales of the Prius plug-in hybrid were 2,095 in the month. October marks the best month for Ford’s plug-in hybrid sales, breaking the sales record posted in September at 1,508 vehicles.
Ford’s plug-in hybrid vehicles managed to surpass Toyota’s offering just a year after launching the C-MAX Energi and less than a year since rolling out the Fusion Energi. U.S. Sales of the plug-in electric cars dropped heavily in January from December. Sales of the Chevrolet Volt, the Toyota Prius Plug-In and Nissan Leaf had all declined. Volt sales decreased by 57% in January (compared to December). On the other hand, Leaf sales fell 56% and Prius Plug-In sales decreased by 36%.
Throughout the industry, U.S. auto sales decreased by 23% from December and it increased by 14.2% compared to last January. Michelle Krebs, an analyst with Edmunds.com, said that the plunge in the sales of plug-in electric cars was significant, even when taking into account that January is typically a slow month for auto sales.

Earlier this year, Volvo unveiled the V60 Plug-in Hybrid, a production-ready vehicle with CO2 emissions below 50 g/km. Today, the Swedish manufacturer announced that the new Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale in 2012. Although, the vehicle will be more expensive than the vehicles fitted with a conventional combustion engine, the fuel costs will cover that difference.
According to Volvo, the V60 Plug-in Hybrid has an electric range of up to 50 kilometres but its total operating range is up to 1200 km.
This means that the car will have a fuel consumption of up to 50 kilometres. Moreover, the V60 Plug-in Hybrid buyers will be able to charge the vehicle via any regular household electricity socket at home or when parked somewhere else. Plug-in hybrid vehicles are increasingly the mobility of choice for many people. Ever since the Jeep Renegade compact sports utility vehicle arrived in 2014, it has been powered by diesel, gasoline or flex (gasoline plus ethanol) engines. But by the start of the decade (2020), the Renegade will also feature a new electrified version, and Fiat Chrysler is already preparing for its production.
In an announcement, FCA basically confirmed the arrival of the all-new Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) in 2020. It will be produced at the FCA Melfi Plant in Italy, where the carmaker is also building the conventionally powered Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X models. The Renegade has been built at its vehicle assembly plant in Melfi, Italy as well as in production locations in Brazil and China. It is the first Jeep product to be built exclusively outside of North America.

When BMW finally commences sales of the heavily anticipated 8-Series Coupe, it will offer the all-new flagship in two powerful engine variants – a petrol-powered biturbo 4.4 liter V8 unit and a diesel-fueled 3.0 liter biturbo inline six mill. Nonetheless, there are customers hoping that new BMW 8 Series would be offered with a V12 engine or a plug-in hybrid drive, but the German premium has no plans for those.
Carsten Groeber, vice-president of product management at BMW Group, was quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show as saying that a V12-powered 8 Series won't happen. The BMW 7 Series -- the M760Li xDrive in particular – is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 petrol engine that can provide 601 hp (448 kW) of output and 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque. This allows the M760Li xDrive to dash from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
Groeber noted that the V8 engine and the in-line six unit already allows for a perfect weight distribution with the new 8 Series. Since the V12 engine is a very heavy mill, it would destroy this weight distribution, particularly making the front too heavy. This time, Porsche is giving away their fare share to their employees after a successful financial year in 2017. The automaker is giving away bonuses to around 23,000 workers.
The Porsche Executive Board and Group works council made an agreement to give a bonus of €8,600 plus the €700 that will be directed to company’s own pension scheme, or to individual ones. Aside from that, after 70 years of being in the industry, with their very first model, the 356 that dates back to 1948, the automaker will give employees an additional €356 to celebrate this model. Similar to last year, the automaker then gave their employees a yearly bonus of €9,111 to celebrate the 911.

To jump onto the next step of going greener, Porsche announced that they will be getting rid of the last few vehicles that have diesel-fueled engines in their lineup, so that they could focus on electrifying their vehicles. In fact, European countries will no longer offer the Panamera and Macan with the oil burning mills. The first Macan S Diesel and Panamera 4S Diesel initially came out nine years ago.
In an interview between Autocar and Porsche, the automaker cited a cultural shift as the reason for the decision. There was also a regulatory reason behind the choice as there has been a software update that has recently been involved in an “ongoing consultation with the authorities”.
This was decided after the automaker chose not to launch the new version of its Cayenne SUV with a diesel engine. 2017 was definitely a great year for Porsche as the automaker was able to break their sales record in the United States. Overall, they delivered a total of 55,420 vehicles, which stands for a 2.1 percent increase over the previous year.
Of course, you are probably wondering which model contributed the most to the total. And to answer your question, that would be the Macan. In fact, that nameplate alone sold 21,429 units, which is a huge improvement over 2016, which posted a total of 19,332 units delivered. Next in line is the Cayenne, which had 13,203 deliveries. The third most popular car would be the 911, which sold 6,731 units.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), revealed that in the U.S. market, a total of 3,913 units were sold in December 2017. These are for the model lines that include the 718 Boxster, 911, Cayenne, Cayman, Macan, and Panamera. With this, total U.S. vehicle sales of the Porsche for 2017 are 55,420 units. This is higher by 2.1% when compared to sales in 2016, at 54,280 units.
Meanwhile, sales of the Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicles amounted to 2,153 units. This represents an increase of 24.6% compared to sales in December 2016. In terms of total annual sales, the figure stands at 19,104 deliveries, an increase of 12.5%.
For December 2017, the Porsche Macan represented almost 37% of the total sales with 1,444 units sold. This was followed by the Cayenne at 24% with 940 units and at third is the 911 at around 20% for 773 units sold. There had been speculations that the Bentley Bentayga will soon have a hybrid powertrain that will be added to its engine lineup. And recently, the automaker confirmed this matter. So expect to see the SUV with a PHEV variant at the upcoming 2018 Geneva Motor Show in early March this year.
Under the Bentley Bentayga’s hood will be an engine that is similar to that of the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. It will be equipped with a 2.9 liter V6 that will be paired to an electric motor so it can produce a total output of about 462 horsepower (345 kilowatts). Expect the Bentayga to have a similar range as the Panamera, capable of reaching 30 miles (48 kilometers) on purely electric energy.
Currently, the Bentley Bentayga offers a 6.0 liter W12 biturbo and a 4.0 liter V8 biturbo diesel, which the new PHEV version will join. This version will go on sale in the second quarter of 2018. It has only been a few days since Oliver Schmidt, former Volkswagen executive, was handed a maximum possible sentence by US District Judge Sean Cox. He will have to spend seven years in prison and pay a fine of $400,000. And on December 8, Volkswagen has again been put on the spot. The German automaker urgently had to stop their sales of the T6 Multivan in Germany because it was discovered that the van emits way more nitrogen oxide than what is allowed by local emissions limits.
Der Spiegel magazine said that the findings have already been reported to the KBA, Germany’s motor transport authority. This had been quoted by Automotive News.
What happened is that Volkswagen set the “adjustment factor” too low when they submitted documents to the KBA to have the T6 Multivan’s sales approved, says the German publication.
