The redesigned Scion tC coupe from Toyota is expected to double sales and to revive the youth-centered brand, according to Scion’s vice president Jack Hollis who spoke during a media briefing at Oakland University in suburban Detroit. Scion has set a target in 2011 to sell 35,000 to 45,000 of its coupes.
Sales had peaked in 2006 with 79,125 units. In 2009, Scion sold 18,000 tCs, a 56 percent drop from the year before. Bloomberg News reported that last March, Hollis had forecast sales of 40,000 to 50,000 in 2011. Scion has high expectations for the redesigned tC, which will arrive in showrooms on Oct. 1. The tC has accounted for about 40 percent of Scion's overall sales since it was launched six years ago.
Coupe sales have continued to drop this year, with a 36 percent drop through August, to 8,848 vehicles. Scion, after having a promising start back in 2004, is currently facing a downturn in sales with 12.5 percent sales decrease last year with only 113,900 vehicles sold compared with 2007. The prospect is not encouraging with forecasts saying that the sales decrease will continue in this current year.
The blame is placed at the doorsteps of a weakened market, although the insignificant changes in the main variants, the redesigned xB and xD compared to the entry level xB and xA, and the mild changes the tC coupe has received, may also account for the dwindling interest.
The company is currently attempting to revive its portfolio and increase sales by the introduction of its latest tC coupe which is set to be available within two years or so and which will be followed by a totally new model close at its heels.Read the entire article Scion reviving its portfolio with the new tC coupe
