Scion unveils C-HR Concept SUV at Los Angeles Auto Show

SUVs are known more for their functionality than their performance and design. But what would you say about an SUV that combines the best aspects of these three elements? At the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, Scion is presenting an SUV that boasts of having this trifecta -- the Scion C-HR Concept -- which stands for "Compact size and High Ride height."

This model is conceived for young urban creatives or “yuccies,” who yearn for vehicles with an outstanding yet distinctive design. Yuccies typically see SUVs as boring, lacking emotion and not appropriate for their modern lifestyle.

During their research, designers found out that participants have taken a liking to images of objects that combine form and function, namely: sleek chopsticks made from recycled materials, a cutting board with grid lines for precise slicing, and an earthy but modern terrarium.

Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to stop selling the Scion iQ after the size, price and fuel economy of its smallest car didn’t get the attention of buyers in the United States. In fact, Toyota only sold 2,040 iQs in the US in 2014 for a 50-percent drop, as the carmaker allowed its dealers to submit orders based on demand, according to Scion’s brand chief Doug Murtha.

He told Bloomberg at the Detroit auto show that the iQ won’t be “staying in the lineup too much longer.” Scion currently offers four models, after stopping output of the the xD ended in July 2014. Toyota, however, is planning to roll out three Scion models in the next three years, including two this year as it tries to revive the now struggling brand which sales dropped 15 percent in 2014 to just 58,009.

Murtha remarked that the iQ was a “healthy experiment” that allowed Toyota to learned important lessons about US consumers’ preferences. Customers found the small size of the iQ non-appealing, even if Toyota tried to assured them that the vehicle was engineered to achieve a four-star crash rating and even features 11 airbags.

Things are getting quite interesting for Scion as the brand owned by Toyota Motor Corp. will soon receive a sedan to its lineup. The vehicle will be introduced in April at the 2015 New York Auto Show and for those who don’t know this is the first time when Scion will offer a sedan.

Still, the New York Auto Show will not be the only vehicle introduced by Scion as the all-new Scion iM will also arrive to “The Big Apple”. As expected, the new iM hatchback will be inspired by the iM Concept, which was unveiled back in November at the 2014 LA Auto Show.

With the introduction of the two models, Scion looks to bolster its aging lineup and increase its sales in the United States, which slumped 15 percent to 58,009 vehicles in 2014. In addition, the introduction of the iM hatchback also marks the introduction of a new design, brand’s first in three years.
