2017 SEAT Ibiza gets a lot of new features, but not the Cupra treatment

We first heard of the fifth generation SEAT Ibiza earlier this year, and last week, the company finally revealed the all-new Ibiza at the international launch in Barcelona.

The new generation Ibiza now comes with the latest technology features, impressive dynamics, and a really sweet interior offering plenty of space and comfort. Similar to other SEAT models, the Ibiza still has got the company’s distinctive DNA in terms of design. Despite its new styling with an emphasis on its sculpted, streamlined surfaces giving it more of an edge, it remains youthful, functional, and sporty just like its siblings.

The company promises intelligent technology and connectivity. Therefore, the Ibiza comes with an 8-inch infotainment system with touchscreen feature. More than other models, the Ibiza has three connectivity options including: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link. It features Front Assist as standard, with Adaptive Cruise Control, wireless charger and GSM signal amplifier as options.

Seat offers revised Ibiza with cleaner engines, cabin upgrades

Seat will begin selling its revised Ibiza this autumn in the UK. Launched at the Barcelona motor show, the Ibiza is available with lower-emission engines and boasts of numerous upgrades to its cabin. The Ibiza, which will compete with the Ford Fiesta, will still be offered in three-door SC, five-door and estate ST forms. Seat gave its exterior some very subtle tweaks. Its headlights are different.

It now uses LED daytime running lights. Its alloy wheels are available with new designs and it comes with two new paint colors. The major differences lie under the bonnet. The Ibiza will be offered with several of the newest three-cylinder petrol engines from the VW Group. The 74bhp 1.0-litre motor – the entry-level engine – has been used in the Up, Mii and Citigo city cars.

But then, the Ibiza will be offered with this engine’s turbocharged variants (89bhp and 109bhp) – the first product from the VW Group to get these. Fans have been waiting for these motors for quite some time now. In 2012, the higher-powered version was seen in the Up GT. Details about the new Ibiza’s performance or efficiency have not been released yet.

The new 140PS 1.4 TSI ACT engine fitted in the SEAT Ibiza FR Edition does not need to use all of its four cylinders to amply power the car -- it just needs a couple of them. Active Cylinder Technology shuts off the second and third cylinders when cruising at low engine speeds and when low torque outputs are required.

It will re-activate the cylinders when more torque is needed. As a result, the amount of fuel consumed is significantly trimmed down, resulting to a SEAT Ibiza FR Edition that is rated 60.1 mpg on the combined cycle while able to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in under eight seconds.

The new ACT petrol engine, which replaces the 150 PS 1.4 TSI non-ACT engine in the Ibiza range, offer similar performance level as its predecessor but returns 12.2 mpg average efficiency improvement and emits 30 g/km less carbon dioxide to 109 g/km. Available only in manual transmission, the standard 1.4 TSI ACT FR is also £1,015 less expensive than its predecessor.

Seat thinks that more demand will be generated for the Ibiza if it gets an extensive redesign and additional features. Selling more Ibizas is crucial to the Spanish brand as this subcompact made up 55% of the Volkswagen Group subsidiary's 350,009 sales last year. At the press launch of the Ibiza, Ulf Eberhardt, Seat's head of product marketing, said, "The Ibiza is Seat and Seat is the Ibiza.”

Market researcher JATO Dynamics said that in Europe, the current Ibiza (the third-generation of the car) was on the market since 2008, making up 52% of the 311,217 units sold by Volkswagen Group subsidiary in 2011. Seat is relying on an aggressive product campaign that covers the facelifted Ibiza, the new Mii minicar and the next-generation Leon so that the brand would earn profits by 2013.

Seat posted a 225 million euro operating loss last year -- an improvement over the 311 million euro loss in 2010. Seat said that most of the buyers of the subcompact are in their 30s and 40s. Eberhardt said that the updated Ibiza will still appeal to these consumers since its new design is emphasized with the addition of optional LED daytime running lights and LED taillights.
