Honda unveils the CR-V Hybrid in China, may also come to the United States

Honda will be displaying the electrically assisted CUV in their showrooms later this year. This has been confirmed in China at least. Fresh from its debut at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, the latest hybrid CR-V will soon go on sale in Asia’s fastest growing market for hybrid vehicles.

While the engineering for the China-bound CR-V Hybrid has already been finalized, it only makes sense that Honda would be considering the US as its next important step. In the US, the Honda Accord is in fact using the same powertrain found on the newly electrified crossover.

Honda however hasn't disclosed the exact details for the CR-V hybrid’s powertrain while on its premiere. If the CRV’s hybrid specs are indeed the same as those on the Accord, we can therefore expect the electrified crossover to be running on a 143hp (107kW), 129 lb-ft (175Nm) of torque, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This will come equipped with a 1.3kWh lithium ion battery pack with a total power of 212hp (158kW) to match.

2018 Paris Motor Show: Honda unveils production-ready 181-hp CR-V Hybrid

Honda is moving forward with its electrification plans in Europe after unveiling the production-ready version of the new 2019 Honda CR-V Hybrid at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. It was part of a number of creations that the Japanese carmaker is displaying in Paris, including the refreshed Honda HR-V SUV, and a specially-commissioned Civic Type R ‘Art Car’.

In September 2017, Honda took the wraps off a near-production Euros-spec prototype of the CR-V Hybrid at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, with plans to sell the production version exclusively in Europe. By then, it was believed that the Euro-spec CR-V Hybrid will be the replacement for the 160hp i-DTEC diesel version of the SUV, as part of the carmaker’s answer to the regulations affecting the market of diesel engines.

Back then, Honda was tight-lipped about the technical details of the prototype. The carmaker only revealed that its electrified powertrain will feature an electric motor and a 2.0-liter four cylinder i-Vtec gasoline engine.

Honda to debut European-spec CR-V at 2018 Geneva Motor Show

Honda revealed that its new CR-V is now set to make its official debut in Europe through the upcoming 2018 Geneva Motor Show. This same model had already been presented in U.S. shores back in 2016. With this new model, Honda hopes to raise the standards for SUVs as it relates to refinement, the quality of the interior, and space. Indeed, this new CR-V model is expected to bring with it a new design, new powertrains, and new technologies.

This new CR-V will come equipped with the brand's hybrid technology. This will be the first time a Honda SUV offered for the European market will have such a system. It will utilize Honda's Intelligent Multi Mode Drive hybrid system, or i-MMD.

This system is composed of two electric motors and the i-VTEC 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle petrol engine. Further, the system does not use a conventional transmission but rather has a more compact unit having a single fixed-gear ratio. As such, this combination allows for effortless driveability and real-world efficiency.

Euro-spec 2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid Prototype is en route to Frankfurt

Following its debut at the Auto Shanghai early this year, the 2018 CR-V’s next stop will be next week’s Internationale Automobil-Austellung (IAA) in Germany. Honda’s first electric SUV will soon be posing as a near-production prototype which is to be sold exclusively in Europe. The 2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid will appear together with Honda Jazz’s new Sport trim and Urban EV concept during the two-week event.

The Euro-spec hybrid will be replacing the 160hp i-DTEC diesel as an answer to the current regulations affecting the market of diesel engines. For its design, the Hybrid SUV in prototype form will be very similar to the US-spec CR-V as well as the model previewed earlier in China. The lower LED light bar, in place of the round shaped fog lights, is just among the subtle variations on the exterior to draw the line between the 1.5-liter conventional engine and the hybrid set-up.

Honda is very tight-lipped about the technical details and only revealed that the electrified powertrain will consist of an electric motor and a 2.0-liter i-Vtec gasoline engine with four cylinder that runs on the Atkinson cycle. All the same, the complete specs will surely come out before or after Honda launches the CR-V hybrid in Europe sometime in 2018. Early speculations suggest that Honda’s next SUV will borrow Honda Accord’s hybrid set-up but it is better to trust the company’s official announcement. Currently, the Accord hybrid boasts a total of 212hp output with two-motor hybrid technology that no longer sees the need for conventional transmission. Rather, it only makes use of a single fixed gear ratio to push power down the wheels.

Volkswagen gives us a preview of what may be our future cars in the next decade or two. Their latest concept, the I.D. Crozz, is an electric crossover that the automaker unveiled after introducing the hatchback and minivan versions of the I.D.

From the looks of it, the car has a minimalistic design. The curves and creases of the body paired with sleek headlights and illuminated VW badges add to its futuristic design. A pair of all-LED taillights that extend to the rear fenders then give it a unique touch.

The engineers are really focusing on autonomous driving. When “I.D. Pilot” mode is activated, the computers will analyze everything in the car. The adaptive LED headlights will be activated, along with the interior and exterior ambient lighting. The fully autonomous mode will even retract the steering wheel into the dashboard for more cabin space.

Two years ago at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi presented the E-Tron Quattro to the public. This gave us an idea that they will soon be producing crossovers. The Quattro will be moving into production by 2018, and a year later, a coupe version of it will follow. This crossover-coupe they call the E-Tron Sportback made its debut at the Auto Shanghai in China just this week, along with two other electric concepts from competitors: the VW I.D. Crozz and the Skoda Vision E.

Similar to Volkswagen I.D. Crozz, Audi’s E-Tron Sportback also features light emitting diodes. The four-rings brand not only equips this new concept with full LED headlights and taillights. It also gets an illuminated Audi logo. Instead, it is supposed to have approximately 250 extra LEDs located around the front bumper, precisely on both sides of the corporate singleframe grille. But these lights do not only have one purpose - they are made to communicate with other cars on the road forming different light patterns - from shapes to numbers as seen on its concept video debut.

The E-Tron Sportback isn’t just about smart LEDs. At 4.9 meters long, 1.98 meters wide, and 1.53 meters tall, this coupe has a strong electric powertrain that can produce as much as 430 horsepower (320 kilowatts), and can reach a peak of 496 horsepower (370 kilowatts) when the boost mode is activated. Taking only 4.5 seconds, this little EV can accelerate up to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) from a standstill.

Despite the MG E-Motion Concept set to be unveiled in a few days at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, it appears that the internet once again managed to get the upper hand. Albeit rather grainy, a set of official images showing MG’s newest four-seater coupe has been released on the World Wide Web.

Images show that the exterior appears to have a rather stylish design especially with the use of butterfly doors and a more pronounced grille in the front. Clearly inspired from that of Mercedes-Benz, the grille carries on its center the MG badge and based on the photos, appears to light up mainly due to LEDs. At the top portion and placed at the corner of the grille are the sleek headlights which look similar to the ones on Mazda. Still, the headlights give the vehicle a more high-tech look and this feel is enhanced further by having cameras instead of the usual door mirrors.

Fitted to it are the alloy two-tone wheels and if we look up, we see the thick side skirts above which is the panoramic roof. Going to the rear, viewers will likely be surprised to see what may be the biggest diffusers placed in a car. Still on this section, there are the sweptback taillights with a spoiler lip cleanly integrated. Much like the bumper in the front, the rear bumper also has the “E-Motion” lettering placed on it. This serves two purposes with the first being that it emphasizes the name of this mode. The second is that it drives home the point that the model comes with an all-electric powertrain.

The company added that this will signal the official start of its launch to the Chinese market. Audi has been delighting fans and critics alike with teaser videos of its newest concept fitted with numerous LEDs. The German automaker is back to show off a more “substantial” preview of its latest creation – now complete with a name and a few adjacent sketches, enough to reveal its body style and a few exterior features. Ready to know more about it? Here goes.

We’ve come to know that Audi’s latest creation is called the Audi E-Tron Sportback Concept. However, despite being called a “Sportback,” we’re expecting this concept car to be a crossover-coupe combination. From the photos released by Audi themselves, we can conclude that the E-Tron Sportback Concept isn’t just a typical hatchback like the A3 Sportback as it’s something far better.

As expected (and as depicted in design teaser sketches), the concept is fitted with a set of oversized wheels. Its heavily sloped roofline ending is reminiscent of a coupe but accentuated by an interesting spoiler which features two arches on both sides. The E-Tron Sportback does without the conventional side mirrors (also an expected move), with cameras on its stead, giving the concept car a sleeker look.

When it comes to being the top crossover, there are only two models that can confidently say they have been in the market for at least 20 years. This is the CR-V from Honda and the RAV4 from Toyota. It really does not come as a surprise to know why these two are also the most popular.

Many are likely familiar with the fact that utility vehicles had a start during the 1970s with the 4x4s. However as more customers demanded vehicles that offer better ride, displays improved fuel economy, and comes with the latest in infotainment and electronic systems, this has led to crossovers entering the market.

For the 2017 CR-V in particular, Consumer Reports reveals that while the prior generation had a rather bland interior, the new version has a cabin that is not only plush, but classy as well. According to Honda, when they developed the new CR-V, they wanted a crossover utility vehicle that would be fitting for the upmarket. It is no wonder then that the 2017 CR-V not only has a cabin that is quieter but it is also a model that delivers a better ride. This was a result of two things with the first being an excellent usage of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) engineering and the second the inclusion of an active noise cancelling system. Honda however was apparently not done with this as the brand managed to give the CR-V a more enjoyable drive by using qualities previously seen on the Civic.

This is not the first time the Swedish magazine faces the same problem with the CR-V as they also did this test with the previous CR-V model and after a software update from Honda, the vehicle performed well.

Now, the new model shows the same problems and it is not able to climb uphill when the front wheels have no friction. According to an official response from Honda, its AWD system uses a compact, fuel-efficient rear differential and its design requires certain torque limitation for the device to work effectively in real conditions.

Euro NCAP has awarded the top five-star rating to the UK-built Honda CR-V, making the vehicle one of the safest in Europe. The system rates a vehicle’s overall safety performance, providing consumers an easy-to-understand single score. Euro NCAP rates overall safety in four different aspects -- occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of driver aids.

Since Euro NCAP implemented its current rating scheme in February 2009, all Honda models tested received 5 stars: Accord, Insight, Jazz, CR-Z, Civic and CR-V. The safety rating for the CR-V -- built at Honda's manufacturing site in Swindon, England -- reflects the carmaker's commitment to overall vehicle safety, which is embodied by the term "Safety for Everyone."

According to Honda, this term means crash protection not only for drivers and passengers, but also for occupants of other vehicles, and injury mitigation for pedestrians. Honda has a car-to-car crash test facility at its Tochigi R&D site that analyses impacts between vehicles of different sizes. The facility then develops solutions to mitigate injuries for both passengers and pedestrians.
