This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Smart brand in the United States. The company aims to celebrate this milestone by launching a special edition 10th Anniversary Edition of the Fortwo Coupe Electric Drive sometime this year.
The Anniversary Edition will be painted in an exclusive shade of blue which they call the Sapphire Blue Metallic, while the exterior will be getting 10th Anniversary badges to give the car some accents. It will be sitting on a set of 16-inch Brabus Monoblock VII wheels, painted in Matte Anthracite Grey to give it a little contrast. Overall, we think that it has a cool colour combination, with the dark blue body and the wheels that stand out.
Most of the changes for the special edition car can be found on the exterior. Though there are changes in the cabin, they may not be as significant. And the only obvious ones include the Brabus-supplied parts for the shift knob and floor mats. Unlike the regular model, the 10th Anniversary Edition model will be getting the Sport Package as a standard. Finally, a fully electric car without steering wheels and pedals is here. Thanks to Smart as they revealed their newest concept car a few days before the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. Smart's concept, the Vision EQ ForTwo, focuses more on car sharing as opposed to building a personal vehicle amid the aims of big cities to manage traffic. The concept is a two-seater compact vehicle equipped with an advanced autonomous system.
Daimler's master plan by 2022 is to release 10 production electric vehicles, with the newly established EQ brand. And the Vision EQ ForTwo might be a preview of what we can expect from them. The company also said that their future electric vehicles will range in size from a compact Smart model to a large SUV that carries the Mercedes badge.

Daimler AG, through its Smart division, has disclosed that its two electric models, the Smart ForTwo and the Smart ForFour are now open for orders in Germany. Official market launch is scheduled in June.
The ForTwo is priced starting at €21,940 with the ForFour having a price of €22,600. However, since the electric drive models of the brand have been certified to be qualified to be part of the Germany’s environmental incentive scheme, this means that the price can be lowered by at least €4,000. This means that the ForTwo can be purchased at €17,558.84 with the ForFour now available at €18,220.
For those who want something from a higher range, the ForTwo Cabrio Electric Drive is a good option. With a starting price of €25,200, the green bonus means that this is now priced at around €21,000. If that’s still not enough, there is also the ForTwo Electric Drive Greenflash which comes in at €27,839. Still with the eco bonus, this goes down to €23,459. If you have a penchant for the gasoline version of Smart’s ForTwo small coupe and small convertible, better arrange your finances and get a unit before September 2017. That’s because Smart will soon discontinue sales of its conventionally powered small vehicles in North America, including the United States and Canada, according to reports from Automotive News and German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
This development came after Smart dealers in the US and Canada received a game-changing letter from Mercedes-Benz USA chief executive Dietmar Exler. In the letter, Exler noted that Smart’s current product portfolio is facing some challenges brought by developments within the micro-car segment. He then said that as Smart launches the fourth generation of the Smart ForTwo electric drive in the summer, the brand’s product lineup in the US and Canada will include only zero-emissions Smart electric-drive coupe and cabriolet.
Exler’s statement effectively meant the imminent discontinuation of its conventionally powered products. More specifically, Smart will discontinue the production and sales of gasoline-powered offerings after the 2017 model year – only in the US and Canada. The upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show is the venue for the unveiling of the open-top version of the smart fortwo, which will be launched in the United States. The new fortwo cabrio is said to be three cars in one – all transformations done with a touch of a button. At its initial form, the fortwo cabrio is a closed two-seater.
However, it can be transformed into a car with a large sliding canvas sunroof. It can also be transformed into a full-fledged cabriolet with the opened soft top for an open air driving experience. These transformations have been made possible by the "tritop" folding soft top and the removable roof bars.
Also, the smart fortwo cabrio is considered to be the only true cabriolet in its vehicle class. The fortwo cabrio takes only 12 seconds to fully open at a push of a button. The Smart minicar brand believes that China could surpass Germany and Italy as the largest market for its vehicles, according to Smart chief executive Annette Winkler. She remarked to Reuters that at the start, there were doubts that Smart could become successful in China since typically, the country’s premium market is about big cars.
However, in some months of 2014, China proved to be one of the top global markets for Smart as sales of premium compact models starts to pick up. Smart has been in China for five years and posted sales of around 17,500 cars in the country in 2013.
Daniel Lescow, the brand’s chief for China, told Reuters that Smart is expected to post a slight growth this year to record sales, no thanks partly to model changes. Available for a limited period, the new edition features a tridion safety cell in Lava Orange which is combined with body panels/body in white on the ForTwo and Graphite Grey on the ForFour.
Moreover, the vehicle comes with the Edition 1 badge on the B-pillar and a chromed tailpipe for the exhaust system. Daimler officially introduced today the all-new 2015 Smart ForTwo and ForFour models and announced that the new vehicles will arrive in Europe in November. The 2015 Smart ForTwo will be priced under 11,000 euros (model powered by the 71 hp engine), while the 2015 Smart ForFour will cost around 600 euros more with the same engine.
As you can see from the photos, the new models are inspired by the FourJoy Concept that made its debut back in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and is a big step over its predecessor. According to the official press release, the 2015 Smart ForTwo and ForFour models will offer new three-cylinder engines and dual clutch transmission.
Two engines will be available at the market launch: a naturally aspirated engine that delivers 71 hp (52 kW) from a capacity of 999 cc and 91 Nm of torque at 2850 rpm; a 898 cc turbo engine delivers 90 hp (66 kW) and 135 Nm of torque at 2500 rpm. A few months after the market launch, Smart will offer a basic petrol engine that delivers 60 hp (45 kW). Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of German carmaker Daimler AG, is confident that the all-new Smart ForFour minicar will be successful and will help the brand post its first profit. He remarked that the ForFour is an extended ForTwo, having the attributes of the latter like wider interior relative to length and a rear-mounted engine.
Annette Winkler, chief of the Smart brand, described the ForFour as “the station wagon version of the ForTwo.” Smart rolled out the ForTwo in 1997 and the vehicle was an instant success being as the only two-seat microcar available in the market.

Consumers in Europe will welcome the arrival of the new Smart ForFour car this year, but those in the United States will not. Smart boss Annette Winkler said during the Detroit auto show that they have yet to decide whether to homologate the ForFour for the US, since the Daimler unit is still unsure whether there is a big enough market in the country for the car to justify the cost of homologation.
According to Winkler, the redesigned ForTwo -- which is wider and roomier than the current model -- may be enough to increase US sales. "There are other regulations to comply with, and to achieve what is needed here costs extra money," she said. Smart posted a 7-percent drop in sales in the US to 9,264 units in 2013.
Steve Cannon, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz USA, remarked that Smart is more of a 10,000 unit niche player than a volume brand. Smart’s third-generation ForTwo model is now in the final phase of a three-year test and development program. Smart is planning to unveil the third-generation ForTwo in 2014. The latest ForTwo hatchback represents a new chapter for Smart, which recently obtained greater independence from Daimler. The third-generation ForTwo, known internally as project C453, is being developed in a joint engineering program with the second-generation ForFour and sister car third-generation Renault Twingo. Mark Webster, the recently appointed general manager of Smart USA, expects the brand to post a little growth in the next two years. Webster's expectation comes despite the rollout of an electric vehicle and plans for four special-edition models. Smart USA logged a 92-percent surge in sales of its ForTwo microcar to 10,009 units in 2012, after parent Daimler took over its distribution in the United States from Penske Automotive Group.
The increase was also attributed to Daimler's move to boost marketing and employ TV commercials for the first time. Webster, however, said sales will linger at around 10,000 cars every year until a redesigned ForTwo is launched in August 2015.

Mercedes-Benz USA has named Mark Webster as the new general manager of Smart USA, replacing Tracey Matura, who will become general manager of the central region in Chicago. Prior to his appointment, Webster was head of the company-owned Mercedes-Benz Manhattan dealership in New York. Matura’s new role involves being responsible for the region's service, sales, marketing, operations and dealer relations.
Matura has been general manager of Smart and was overseeing the brand's relaunch when Mercedes-Benz USA acquired it in July 2011 from Penske Automotive Group.
The appointments, as well as other changes to Mercedes' U.S. management team, become effective May 1, 2013. According the carmaker, the shuffle is primarily aimed at giving executives more operating experience.
