2017 Volvo V90 premium station wagon priced from $50,945 in the US

Volvo’s stylish premium station wagon is heading to the market, and it doesn’t come cheap. As Swedish carmaker Volvo has indicated, its new Volvo V90 midsize wagon won’t be available through traditional means in the United States. This means that even if you go to the US dealer nearest your location, you won’t be able to simply come out of the showroom driving a 2017 Volvo V90 premium station wagon. This is because Volvo has decided not to stock the V90 stylish wagon in the US, as it has deep concerns over the low demand for regular wagons. Thus, if you want to get Volvo’s premium station wagon as your ride, you have to place a special order for the V90.

Good thing is that Volvo has launched an online configurator for its new products. This would allow interested customers to decide on the specs, features and elements of their new Volvo V90 without having to go their local dealers. Interestingly, the prices are also indicated, which means customers could also fit their Volvo V90 to their budget, giving them a clear idea how much money they need to shell out for their new premium station wagons.

The least expensive Volvo V90 – yes, this stylish wagon fetches a high price – could be availed for a base price of $49,950. When the destination fee of $995 is included, the total price surges to $50,945. This goes for the front-wheel drive V90 R-Design grade that is powered by a T5 turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine that delivers up to 250 hp of output and up to 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

JLR Design Director confirms end of Jaguar station wagons

At a Jaguar F-Pace event, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Design Director Ian Callum said that JLR will no longer be releasing station wagon versions of the Jaguar XE and Jaguar XF. Accordingly, this is because of the low demand for station wagon versions in Europe. This move will allow JLR to refocus on crossovers, which are widely popular across the world.

Being a station wagon enthusiast himself, Callum expressed that he is sad about the decision but he explained that the carmaker needs to move away from the declining market. After all, JLR was not able to make a huge name for the brand when it comes to station wagons. The company has only offered station wagon versions of the 2012 Jaguar XF and the 2004 Jaguar X-Type.

Callum said that the leader in providing station wagon models is Germany. However, Germans favor German manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.

Kia is set to launch its new Optima Sportswagon at 2016 Geneva Motor Show

The motoring world is abuzz with excitement on the March 1 global premier of the all-new Kia Optima Sportswagon during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. This would be Kia's first D-segment tourer, with the D-segment being the European Commission classification for large cars, and is inspired by the 2015 SPORTSPACE concept which made its debut last year during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

Optima Sportwagon bears a striking resemblance to the well-received 2016 Optima Saloon in terms of exterior appeal and the premium interior. However, being a wagon, it has that added cargo capacity which makes it more practical and certainly more appealing to those tourer-inclined buyers. Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer of Kia Motors Europe, explains that the Optima Saloon signals the brand's design-focused shift for its next generation vehicles.

The SPORTSPACE concept was just a prelude as to what Kia planned to do next with the high-successful Optima Saloon which is to morph it into a sporty station wagon to introduce more practicality and style. For the moment, this eye-catching Sportswagon seems to be specifically targeted to the European market.

GM North America President Mark Reuss said that a wagon version of the new Malibu is an “interesting idea.” This comment given to Automotive News gives the few fans of the wagons in the U.S. something to look forward to.

The wagons are admired for their practicality and driving dynamics that are unrivaled by the heavier and bigger crossovers and SUVs. GM has a wagon offering in the Cadillac CTS but it doesn’t have an entry in the non-luxury category.

Hyundai recently displayed its i40 wagon in Europe, which is a version of the current-generation Sonata presently available in the U.S. This led many to hope that it will eventually be offered as a U.S.-market model.

Volvo will stop importing the V50 wagon to the U.S. as the market has migrated to crossovers, according to Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. The V50 is actually the only wagon that Volvo sells in the U.S.

Speck didn’t say when the V50 will be discontinued though. At the end of the 2010 model year, Volvo stopped importing the larger V70 station wagon and said that it will not import the V60 wagon that debuted in Europe last year.

Speck said that sales of the traditional station wagon segment have been falling over the last decade. And in that period, the crossover segment has grown exponentially. He said, “The reality is the crossovers of today are the wagons of yesteryear."

Acura is offering a wagon version of the TSX sedan for 2011. Wagons actually have a very small share of the near-luxury segment in the U.S. and not many automakers produce them. According to Steve Center, American Honda Motor Co.'s chief marketing officer, the wagon is an alternative to SUVs but “without the girth or the stigma and with all the utility.”

Basically, the wagon is a sheet metal extension of the sedan. It has the same hard points as the sedan and even the seating locations are identical.

Because of this, the extension goes entirely into the cargo area. Notably, the TSX gives up four inches of wheelbase to the Audi A4 Avant wagon, but the Acura is four inches longer overall.
