Audi tops 2013 China Sales Satisfaction Index by J.D. Power

Audi topped the premium brand ranking in J.D. Power and Associates' 2013 China Sales Satisfaction Index that was published last week. Audi got a score of 721, much higher than the premium market average of 665. Audi was also the only premium brand to have its results published in the survey.

The 2013 China Sales Satisfaction Index was based on surveys of 14,462 car owners who acquired vehicles from January to April 2013. The buyers were asked to rate their vehicle purchasing experience according to several factors like the delivery process, the initial contact, the deal, the dealership facility and the salesperson. The 47 mass-market brands and six luxury brands in the survey were rated separately since their buyers have different expectations.

On the other hand, topping the mass-market brand ranking in the index is Dongfeng Nissan, which scored 732 of maximum 1,000 points, compared to volume market average of 647. Dongfeng Nissan was followed by Beijing Hyundai with a score of 715. Dongfeng Citroen and Dongfeng Yueda Kia were tied at third with 703 each.

Audi tops J.D. Power’s 2012 China Sales Satisfaction Index Study

For the third straight year, Audi topped the J.D. Power's 2012 China Sales Satisfaction Index Study by scoring 898 points out of a possible 1,000 points. Audi is trailed by Dongfeng Nissan, a joint venture between Nissan Motor Co. and China's Dongfeng Motor Corp., with 897 points.

Rounding up the top three is Beijing Hyundai, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Co. and China's Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp., after scoring 891 points. According to the study results J.D. Power released this month, all of the carmakers scoring above the industry average of 841 points are joint ventures of global brands or imported global brands.

Domestic carmakers, however, could only match the industry average at best, with Chery scoring 841 points. All other domestic brands scored below the industry average.

China-exclusive 2019 Mercedes-Benz GCL L long-wheelbase finally introduced

The battle for supremacy in China among premium SUVs with long wheelbases will soon hot as Mercedes-Benz reveals the long-wheelbase version of the GLC. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC L will only be sold in the Chinese market and will compete against the long-wheelbase variant of the Audi Q5 crossover (Q5 L). Mercedes-Benz is expected to unveil the new GCL L to the public at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in November 2018.

When compared, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC L basically looks like the regular wheelbase version – just like any extended model being sold in the Chinese market. However, the long wheelbase variant of the GCL does appear extended on the side because of its now stretched length. This is evident beyond the B-pillars of the new GLC L, where the roofline looks to have grown longer. This is also evident when looking at its rear doors, which now appear to be longer than those in the regular wheelbase version of the GLC SUV.

For its exact dimensions, the new Mercedes GCL L measures around 4.76 meters (187.6 inches) in overall length as well as 1.89 meters (74.7 inches) in overall width. Its wheelbase – the main focus of this version – has grown by around 100 mm (3.93 inches). An extended wheelbase typically results to larger space in the rear cabin, given rear passengers more room to operate, especially with their legs. Since many people in China tend to be chauffeured off than to drive, vehicles with long wheelbases are a hit in this part of the world. China-exclusive Skoda Kodiaq GT coupe-SUV officially introduced

That was fast! It was only a few days ago when Skoda teased its newest creation – the new all-new Skoda Kodiaq GT coupe-SUV -- through three sketched images. Now, the Czech carmaker is formally introducing online the coupe version of its Kodiaq SUV, revealing a number of details that should excite potential buyers in China.

According to Skoda, the exterior of the new Kodiaq GT coupe SUVis wrapped in sporty proportions. With a length of around 4.63 meters, it is slightly shorter than the Kodiaq SUV. On the front, the new Kodiaq GT is marked by a black-framed grille with chrome-plated dual ribs, as bordered on top by a wide bonnet, on the sides by LED headlights, and on the bottom by a three-dimensional bumper. The new Kodiaq SUV also features a front spoiler with wide air inlets.

When viewed from the sides, the new Skoda Kodiaq GT reveals coupe-like flanks, clear precise lines and a gently sloping roofline, which slope starts from behind the front doors. The coupe SUV also features dynamic wheel arches as well as body-colored chiseled side skirts.

Finally, Skoda is entering the coupe-SUV segment. However, motorists in Europe or United States won't be able to get a piece of it. This is because Skoda is marketing the all-new coupe version of Kodiaq – the Skoda Kodiaq GT -- exclusive in China. Skoda has yet to disclose important details about the all-new Kodiaq GT. Nonetheless, the fact that the Czech carmaker has released three design sketches, Skoda is all-bent to deliver a new coupe-SUV – as based on the Kodiaq SUV – for the Chinese market. This means that China will the only market in the world in which Skoda will be selling four SUV models: Kamiq, Karoq, Kodiaq and Kodiaq GT.

The new Kodiaq GT will be Skoda’s fourth SUV in China, and will be second exclusive model made just for the Chinese market, after the Kamiq. It will also be replacing the Kamiq as the brand’s most expensive SUV and its new flagship in China. According to the Czech carmaker, the Kodiaq GT coupe SUV is a demonstration of its commitment to the Chinese market, expecting the new model to be a key driver of the brand’s image.

German carmaker Volkswagen has just revealed the next generation of the VW Passat family sedan, but there is a twist. During the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, Geely revealed a new flagship saloon model, and for the very first time, it looks like the Chinese automaker might actually set the bar for other international marques to follow.

The Bo Rui GE is the first-ever model to roll out of the automaker’s new design centers set up by Peter Horbury, the company’s head of design, who once worked in Volvo and is now with Geely to oversee design of the company’s subsidiaries. He has been a part of brands like Lotus and LEVC, also known as the company that makes the London taxi.

According to Horbury, the Bo Rui GE was not made under the influence of the Western culture. Rather, it is a sign that the Chinese’s tastes are changing. During his interview, he also stated that the Chinese market has evolved and has become more sophisticated and mature compared to how they were a few years ago. This way, the automaker has also evolved into becoming a confident global brand that can now develop segment-leading cars, but still with a hint of its Chinese origin.

For the longest time, the Skoda Yeti was the only crossover model that the automaker offered to the market. However, that particular model did not really live up to its body style because it became known as an eccentric but adorable tall and rugged hatchback. After the Yeti, Skoda decided to offer a much larger seven-passenger Kodiaq that came in the second half of 2016.

This was then followed by the smaller five seat only Karoq in 2017, which was meant to replace the Yeti. In 2018, Skoda finally decided to add the Kamiq into their portfolio. However, the said model will only be exclusively sold in China, unlike its older siblings that were made available all over the world.

Without having to mention this, the city oriented crossover will be positioned just below the Karoq that we mentioned earlier. This also rounds off Skoda’s three model crossover lineup that is being offered in China. When it comes to the design elements, there isn’t much for us to say because it looks pretty similar to the other two “K” models. However, one thing that you would notice is that the headlights have a different layout, and the main ones are significantly larger too.

Mercedes-Benz is showing some love for the automotive customers in China by unveiling the long-wheelbase version of the A-Class at Auto China 2018, also known as the Beijing Motor Show. The very first A-Class L will be exclusively produced in China, with sales to commence in the country and in other parts of the world in the second half of the year.

While the fourth generation of the A-Class bound for Western Europe next month is the hatchback, the A-Class unveiled at Beijing is a notchback, and Mercedes-Benz is officially calling this compact car the A-Class L Sedan, with the “L” suffix referring to its long-wheelbase character.

This is because the wheelbase of the A-Class L Sedan (at 2,789 mm) is around 60 mm longer than that of the A-Class hatchback (at 2,729 mm), offering more knee room for rear passengers. In terms of dimensions, the new A-Class L Sedan measures 4,609 in length, 1,796 mm in width and 1,460 mm in height. It offers up to 420 liters of boot space.

There’s good news for international carmakers as the Chinese government recently announced that they have scrapped protectionist rules that don’t allow foreign automakers to set up businesses in China. With this change, the People’s Republic will be opening up its auto market in 2020.

Right now, part of the regulations are that to avoid hefty taxes to sell cars in China, foreign carmakers have to start open ventures with local firms and they must not own more than 50 percent of the Chinese counterpart.

These measures were actually introduced back in 1994. The Chinese government sought to promote Chinese companies, but at the same time, limit the influence of the already successful Western firms, which saw that the Chinese market has a huge potential for them.

It is inevitable that there will soon be a fully electric Rolls-Royce vehicle. But it seems that a Rolls-Royce with an electric powertrain will arrive earlier than everyone thinks. We heard that the automaker anticipates releasing the first one within several years. Head of electric powertrains for the BMW Group, Stefan Juraschek, mentioned to Automotive News that they are looking into electrifying. He also said that to penetrate the Chinese market, automakers will have to think of electrifying different models.

Having said all that, Juraschek also stated that there has not been a final decision made for this yet, and it simply is just an idea. However, other executives have given more concrete statements about the model’s chances. If you recall, CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos said last year that “electrification is the way forward.”

There seems to be a developing trade war between the United States and China. Something of this nature will result to losses for both parties and is particularly detrimental for the auto industry. Recently, the Unites States proposed an increase of tariffs on products entering the US from China. And in response to that, the People’s Republic of China is proposing something similar. Unfortunately, their policies cover American cars too.

If you’ve been following news reports, you’d know that President Trump first proposed tariffs of about $50 billion of goods coming into the country from China. Increased taxes applied to products including a number of important car parts like torque converters, lithium batteries, and catalytic converters. This has a huge impact on business involving motorcycles and buses.

Subsequently, China decided to suggest tariffs on $50 billion American products that include cars and planes. Even after this exchange between both countries, President Trump still refuses to call this a trade war. But there’s really no other description for this situation except that. In fact, the President of the Unites States even tweeted about this, saying that trade war is long gone and that it only occurred because of the incompetence of the previous administration.

The Chinese market will soon be getting the exclusive China-only model, Mercedes-Benz GLC-L, for a premium of 15,000 yuan ($2,300) more than the regular model.

The difference is actually quite noticeable as this model has a longer wheelbase. It had been increased by 10 cm (3.93 inches). As you can see from the images from CarNewsChina and Autohome, the roofline seems to have grown starting from the B-pillar.

Since we are discussing a longer wheelbase, then we might as well talk about the vehicle’s dimensions. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-L is 4,765 mm (15.6 feet) long, 1,898 mm (6.2 feet) wide, and 1,648 mm (5.4 feet) high. Its wheelbase has grown to a total of 2,973 mm (9.7 feet).

This just in: China has banned a huge load of cars being produced locally because they do not meet the country’s emissions and fuel consumption requirements. To be more specific, a total of 553 passenger car models that are being produced will be discontinued as early as January 1. Sources from Bloomberg said that this announcement was initially made by the China Vehicle Technology Service Center.

We were not given a complete list of the cars that had been banned, though this includes vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Chevrolet, and plenty others. Many big names will be affected. In the publication we saw, sedans with internal codes BJ7302ETAL2 (Mercedes), FV7145LCDBG (Audi) and SGM7161DAA2 (Chevrolet) are all covered by this ban.

Though 553 may sound like a huge number to us, the secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association, Cui Dongshu, said that that number is considered a small portion of the number of passenger cars being produced in China. On the other hand, an analyst who works in China Merchants Securities Co., Wang Liusheng said that this is the first time that the country is taking action by restricting production of certain models. He also added that this is just the beginning of it, and there might be more issues like this to come.

The 2018 Jaguar XEL with its stretched-out wheelbase and longer doors is the newest addition to the growing list of premium sedans in China---joining the ranks of Mercedes-Benz C-Class L, BMW 3Li and Audi A4L in the long wheelbase category.

Given the increased wheelbase measurement, the XEL is basically an upsized XE variant. But to further differentiate between the regular XE and the elongated sedan, the XEL’s side sills and door handles have been specially painted in chrome in addition to the special XEL badges placed across the windows.

The wheelbase now has an overall measurement of 2,935mm (or 115.5 inches) after Jaguar has extended the distance between the two axles by 3.9 inches (100mm). In contrast, the standard XF’s wheelbase is longer by an inch or 25mm. With this additional measurement, the new XEL offers more legroom than the XE with at least an extra 4.4 inches (112mm) as well as an additional knee space of 3.9 inches (100mm) on the rear seats.

Two months ago, the German automaker started its Intelligent World Drive campaign during the Frankfurt Motor Show, and they boasted that one of its features is that the autonomous driving function adapts to other countries’ ways of driving.

It was the self-driving S-Class that Mercedes-Benz brought to Shanghai, and it was tested on the streets to gather an insight of the real-life traffic and driving situations of China. This information is tasked to help develop the technology.

Several automakers including Porsche, Volkswagen, Smart and even Land Rover have all been victimized by cheap Chinese copycats. And if you haven’t seen it yet, the most recent one would be the Range Rover Evoque’s near exact Chinese replica, called the LandWind X7 that was introduced two years ago. In fact, both models almost look identical except for some tweaks. To prevent this from happening, the British automaker is thinking of implementing a new strategy - that is to hold off on showing concept cars too early.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design boss, recently said that they are now wary of showing concepts years before they’re produced because they fear that the Chinese will replicate them. This is because some of these Chinese brands are very quick at manufacturing and that they could easily beat the production version to the market. Apart from delaying the introduction of concept cars, Jaguar Land Rover has also filed copyrights and competition complaints in China against the LandWind X7.

Just last week, McGovern also said that they are nervous about introducing their concepts as they can simply be copied just like what happened with the Range Rover Evoque. A JLR spokesperson supported his statement by saying that the company’s success is based on their vehicles’ unique design and engineering attributes, and they strongly believe that these must be protected not just in their country, but in the global market.

Jaguar has just released the first official image of its newest offering, the new Jaguar XEL. Essentially the long-wheelbase version of the Jaguar XE compact sedan, the new Jaguar XEL is designed to offer a more spacious interior and is targeted only towards the large auto market in China.

Customers in China are known to prefer premium vehicles, especially ones that offer a spacious rear cabin. This is primarily because more Chinese customers like to be chauffeured, instead of being behind the steering. Because of this, vehicles offering more than ample legroom in the rear cabin are heavily desired by Chinese customers. To this end, carmakers are incessant in offering lengthy vehicles or long-wheelbase versions of their current models. Jaguar has already joined the long list of carmakers trying to get a chunk of the humongous auto market in China. Just last year, Jaguar launched the long-wheelbase version of the XF – the XFL – in the country. Now, the British carmaker officially revealed the looks of the new Jaguar XEL.

Overall, the Jaguar XEL basically looks like the Jaguar XE, except for some tweaks on the dimensions of a number of its parts to accommodate the longer wheelbase. Underpinned supposedly by the new JLR modular vehicle architecture that also underpins the Jaguar XE and XF, the new Jaguar XEL also features a coupe-like profile and a dynamic cab-rearward stance. Automakers, or any other company for that matter, tend to listen when their largest market starts talking. In this case, it is China that had announced its demands as it aims to quickly facilitate the shift to electric-powered vehicles and other forms of alternative energy. China is urging manufacturers to make this possible. To be more specific, the Chinese government recently set out some rules and a credit system that covers how automakers sell their plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, and fully electric cars. In other words, these automakers will have to meet these standards in China or risk penalties. If car manufacturers do not meet the requirements, then they will have to use credits or pay a fine. The bottom line is that if they do not shift to alternative energy, they will have to waste extra money.

So beginning in 2019, a minimum energy score of 10 percent must be met by automakers. And by 2020, this will increase to 12 percent. This score will rely on sales of plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, and fully-electric cars. Credits are earned in the process.

Right now, it might still be a bit confusing because credits for low or zero emission vehicles can differ from one another. To avoid losing credits or getting fined, car makers who build or import at least 30,000 cars to China should start getting into greener options, and dedicate most of their efforts on those. Currently, not many of them have reached fuel-cell levels, so this means the focus is on electric power.
