Small SUVs from Subaru and Mitsubishi given Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety handed “Top Safety Pick+” honors to the Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport after the small sport utility vehicles aced the group’s "small overlap" crash test. In fact, the Forester and the Outlander Sport were the only small SUVs that sailed through the innovative small overlap crash test, in which the front corner of a vehicle on the driver's side collides against a five-foot-tall barrier at 40 mph.

The redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester received “Top Safety Pick+” honors after getting a "good" rating on the test. Joe Nolan, vice president for vehicle research at IIHS, said in a statement that the Subaru's engineers succeeded in doing well in the new test with the redesigned Forester.

Nolan remarked that this is exactly how IIHS hoped carmakers would respond to improve protection for people in these types of serious frontal crashes. The IIHS said that 20 vehicles have now received Top Safety Pick+ accolades for safety in small overlap crashes.

2019 Subaru Forester is powered by 2.5-liter Boxer engine, also more spacious, efficient

Subaru ensures that the 2019 Forester doubles up on traits that crossover buyers look for. In other words, it offers more cargo capacity and improved fuel economy. This model debuts at the 2018 New York Auto Show and will go on sale later this year.

When looking at the 2019 model, you probably will not notice any changes when it comes to styling. In fact, the only difference would be the newer shapes and lines, new lighting designs and the new set of wheels - either 17 or 18 inch for each trim level. One think you cannot see is the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP). The Forester’s wheelbase has been upgraded, making it 1.2 inches longer. Therefore, legroom increases by 1.4 inches too. In fact, the headroom and shoulder room have been increased too. Now, cargo space is up by 76.1 cubic feet when the seats are down.

To make it easier to fit things in the back, Subaru engineers worked hard to widen the cargo door by 5.3 inches. At the same time, they made the cargo floor flatter than before. The rear doors now open wider and the C pillar has a steeper angle, making loading and unloading quick.

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport features minute enhancements

Mitsubishi Outlander is the Japanese automaker’s best-selling model. For 2018, the Outlander Sport will freshen up – both inside and out – to balance it out with the new Eclipse Cross.

Earlier this year, Mitsubishi introduced the Outlander Sport at the Chicago Auto Show with what they called a “special edition”; but wasn’t that successful in the “special” part. Now, for 2017 New York Auto Show, the Japanese automaker re-introduces the 2018 model year by polishing it yet again. Let’s see what changed over the weeks after the Chicago Auto Show.

If you do not look closely (or for some, refer to a “before and after” photo), these changes may be too minimal to be caught right away. For the sake of those who want to know more about the changes, we will be enumerating them one by one.

Subaru has received 8,149 pre-orders for the new Forester since it opened order books on November 13. The redesigned crossover is all-new for 2014. It features bigger body revised engines. It continues to offer the old 2.5-liter naturally aspirated H-4 engine as standard equipment. However, the 2.0-liter turbocharged H-4 has become available as an option.

In prototype form, the Forester was found to be easy to handle and steer. Its continuously variable transmission also made it perform well whether with the base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated or the 2.0-liter turbo models

With regards to the Forester’s main highlight (the Subaru EyeSight camera-based active safety system), it was determined to be an unobtrusive way of ensuring that the driver doesn’t stray from your lane or rear-end traffic in front.

Subaru’s fourth-generation Forester crossover made its debut in North America at the Los Angeles Auto Show. When Subaru offered a Forester the last time, it dropped its boxy styling. But now, its angular looks are back but in a minimal dose. It received a modified front fascia that at first glance, appears a lot like the previous generation car.

However, it has actually received revised fog and headlights and a different front bumper and grille. Another difference is its restyled wheels. Still, the car’s exterior styling is much like that of the previous generation. The new car will be available with two engine options rather than the universally-used 2.5-liter unit the present Forester depends on.

Buyers can still get the 2.5-liter flat four with 170hp but they will have the option of getting a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine with 250 hp. Just like all Subaru models (with the exception of the BRZ), this power will be sent to all four wheels via the all-wheel drive system. A CVT and a six-speed manual transmission are both available.

With the discontinuation of Suzuki’s operations in the U.S., Mitsubishi isn’t daunted and has pledged to remain in the U.S. market in spite of its widening inventory, plunging sales, and dearth of new products. However, Mitsubishi has announced that it seeks to launch two new vehicles -- the 2014 Outlander SUV and a new Limited Edition trim level for its 2013 Outlander Sport CUV -- at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

The 2014 Outlander made its debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It was actually available for sale at the Japanese domestic market for a short period in conventional gas-burning form. A plug-in hybrid is in development.

Mitsubishi has set some grand goals by indicating that the Outlander will have the fuel economy of a compact CUV while also being a seven-seater as standard. It appears that Mitsubishi is hoping to achieve a 30-mpg highway rating but it hasn’t been figured out just what features the Outlander will have to attain this.

As part of Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s plan to eventually double the output of the plant in Normal, Illinois, and make it into an export hub, it has started to produce the Outlander Sport compact sport utility vehicle there. In a statement, Mitsubishi said that it hopes to increase the plant’s output by 60% to 50,000 vehicles in the first year, compared to the 31,000 built in 2011.

Mitsubishi’s spokesman said that the global Outlander Sport model joined the Galant, Endeavor and other vehicles built particularly for North America. The company said that about 50% of the plant's total output would be exported to markets like Russia, Latin America and the Middle East. The automaker said that the 2013 Outlander will arrive in U.S. dealerships in early August.

Mitsubishi Motors predicts that annual production will later increase to 70,000 vehicles, or 100% of capacity, using the present work force of the plant. When the Illinois plant was at its peak, it had the capacity to produce 200,000 vehicles a year on two lines. Mitsubishi Motors’ sales in developed markets had been falling. Just last week, it revealed that it is selling its NedCar factory in the Netherlands to VDL Group, a local bus maker, for only 1 euro.
