Pricing for the 2018 Subaru Legacy has been announced, expect a slight hike

New and improved 2018 Subaru Legacy comes packed with a number of upgraded features from the get go - from the exterior to the interior. And the company has finally revealed the pricing for the Legacy, starting at $22,195, which makes it $200 more expensive than the outgoing model.

Legacy receives updates to its front fascia, the grille, side mirrors and the rear bumpers - keeping it fresh for the mid-cycle update. As for the engine, the base 2.5-liter Box engine still produces 175 horsepower (130 kilowatts), paired with a CVT with paddle shifters. An all wheel drive comes standard, and an Active Torque Vectoring system adds grip in wet conditions.

The upgraded interior is now available in Titanium Grey as an option, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Tech features include a standard 6.5-inch infotainment system that's compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Pandora, and Bluetooth.

Subaru aims to hike sales of 2015 Legacy by 150% via US marketing campaign

Subaru launched this month its biggest marketing campaign in the United States – around 150 percent more than its previous efforts – centered at further boosting its sales, with focus on its Legacy mid-sized sedan. Subaru is hoping that the campaign would boost Legacy sales by over 40 percent in the next 12 months.

Subaru has seen its sales and reputation surge to new levels after it started redesigning its vehicles for US consumers around eight years ago. In fact, Subaru posted six consecutive years of record sales in the country.

While sales of the Legacy are still growing, it is slower than Subaru's other vehicles. Bill Cyphers, retired senior vice president of marketing at Subaru of America, remarked that in the past, the carmaker would introduce a new Legacy, but without the benefit of any advertising.

Subaru to boost output at Lafayette plant for Legacy production

Subaru is planning to hike output at its Lafayette site in Indiana to pave way for the increased production of its redesigned Legacy, remarked Subaru of America President Tom Doll. "We've got a little extra capacity," Doll said after Subaru introduced the 2015 Legacy at the Chicago Auto Show last week. Doll said that Subaru looks to hike Legacy sedan production to 60,000 units in 2014.

In 2013, Subaru built 125,554 Outback wagons and 40,800 Legacy sedans at the Lafayette site. "We would like to close that gap" to have a better balance between the Outback and the Legacy, Doll said. According to Subaru, the Lafayette site has an annual capacity for 310,000 units, including a line that produces the Toyota Camry.

Toyota, which partly owns Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries, had around 97,000 Camry units built at the Lafayette site in 2013. Doll remarked that Subaru is hoping to become a strong player in the mid-sized sedan via the redesigned Legacy, noting that the carmaker Subaru has been known for things other than sedans like all-wheel drive and boxer engines.

The all-new 2015 Subaru Arrived today in Windy City and promises to offer its customers a new design, interior refinement, safety technology and higher fuel efficiency. Coming with All-Wheel Drive as standard, the 2015 Legacy echoes the design themes introduced by the Legacy Concept at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Still, the front grille looks just like the one found on the concept. The 2015 Legacy offers a choice of 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder Boxer engines, bolted as standard with the Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The 2015 Legacy 2.5i is powered by the 2.5-liter Boxer engine that was introduced in 2013 and generates 175 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque. The 3.6-liter boxer engine found on the 2015 Legacy 3.6R Limited delivers 256 hp and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque.

Subaru Legacy and Outback both received “superior” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in its first ratings of automatic braking systems. During the tests, both Legacy and Outback detected a dummy car on the road and managed to decelerate from 25 mph to a stop in time to avoid slamming into it.

This was all thanks to Subaru’s EyeSight system, a package of cameras and software that scans the road ahead for possible obstruction. The Legacy and Outback were among the vehicles tested that managed a full stop.

Five other models -- the Cadillac ATS and SRX, Volvo S60 and XC60, and Mercedes-Benz C class – also received "superior" rating from the IIHS as they managed to slow down sufficiently after sensing the dummy car.

Subaru will expand its Lafayette plant in Indiana to increase production of the Legacy sedan and wagon as well as the Outback crossover. The 52,000-square-foot expansion of the facility's body assembly section costs $75 million. This project will begin this summer and will raise the factory's capacity to 180,000 units during regular shifts, the automaker revealed.

Subaru said that the present limit is 156,000 vehicles on straight time. The expansion is also anticipated to bring 100 full-time jobs, according to the company. The Lafayette facility has 3,600 employees, with at least 600 jobs added since 2009. It also manufactures the Tribeca SUV as well as Toyota's Camry sedan.

The expansion confirms plans for more North American capacity, which Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries hinted during a May 8 press conference in Japan. Subaru recently dismissed a plan to manufacture vehicles in China by 2016.

Sales of the 2012 Impreza, Legacy and Outback models from Subaru were halted on Nov. 25 over complaints on increased brake pedal travel. In addition, the recall for about 3,000 units already delivered to their owners has been issued. Parent company Fuji Heavy Industries said that the company got about 130 reports of the brakes being defective.

So far, it has confirmed the flaw on three vehicles. Subaru of America spokesman Michael McHale said that several customers have complained that the brakes “didn't feel right” and that the pedal travelled farther than it should.

However, he reiterated that there were no failure issues and accidents. Subaru would need to replace the master cylinder in order to repair the vehicle. McHale said that the 130 field reports originated from either dealers or dealership personnel that handle the cars. The NHTSA has already been informed and the recall notices are currently being distributed to vehicle owners.

The all-wheel drive version of the new 2010 Subaru Legacy is now rated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). While the new Subaru Legacy is now bigger than its predecessor, it is able to return EPA-rated fuel economy figures of up to 26 mpg combined and 31 mpg highway.

One version, the Legacy 2.5i CVT features a combined fuel economy rating (EPA) that is better than other front-wheel rivals like the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6i and Volkswagen Passat.

With these fuel economy numbers, the new Subaru Legacy is now the highest EPA-rated midsize AWD sedan in the US for the 2010 model year. The latest iteration of the Legacy is powered by Subaru's Boxer engine matched to a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

In order to celebrate the 20th birthday of the Legacy sedan (a.k.a. Liberty), Subaru will be unwrapping the brand new fifth-generation version at the New York Auto Show next week. The design of the new Legacy is not as controversial as seen in the number of modification of the Impreza range over the years, but it will surely generate divided appreciation for the car.

The 2010 Legacy is the most spacious model yet and like the preceding version the car is equipped with a selection of horizontally-opposed boxer powerplants and symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive. The most current Subaru Lineartronic, a continuously adaptable transmission, will be featured on the car with a unique manual version to permit the driver to shift gears utilizing the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

Also offered for the first time on the full lineup of the Legacy models will be a 6-speed manual. The base Legacy powerplant is the 2.5-liter unit which produces 170hp (127kW) and 170lb-ft (230Nm) of torque, followed by a 265hp (197kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) turbocharged variant of the same powerplant for the Legacy 2.5GT.

By way of commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Legacy sedan, Subaru is removing the wraps off of its brand new fifth-generation model this year. The carmaker has been known for its extreme design approach, as is true wit the long term modification the Impreza line has undergone.

However, the latest Legacy seems to be outside popular image of Subaru, although, again it might still divide opinions. It comes with an appealing price tag though. With beginning sticker price of $19,995 for the 2.5i, about $800 cheaper than the previous Legacy, the latest model provides better value for money due to a slightly bigger size and more regular highlights.

With the addition of a CVT, price is boosted by $1,000, and going up a step higher to the 2.5i Premium trim, the base price is now set to $20,995 when coming with a regular six-speed manual, although it also bring in a horde of elements above the 2.5i, which includes a driver seat with 10-way power adjustment, driver's power window, steering wheel wrapped in leather, instrument storage case with door, an overhead console with holder for sunglasses and surround lighting, a shiny exhaust tip, mirrors with body colors and 16 inch alloy wheels completing the feature lineup.

Subaru has recently removed the wraps around its fifth-generation Legacy and Outback models which are due to be released in Japan with the addition of the new Touring wagon and sporty B4 to the range to coincide with said launch.

True to speculations, the latest Touring model has adopted the controversial styling found on the sedan version together with the same powerplant line, which points to the 2.5-liter powerplant which can produce 170hp (127kW) and a top torque of 170lb-ft (230Nm).

Offered likewise will be a 265hp (197kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) turbocharged variant of the same powerplant for the Legacy GT wagon's 2.5-liter powerplant.

In spite of the seeming unattractiveness of the 2010 Legacy, Subaru has almost been unaffected by the crisis that is shaking other carmakers and has in fact gathered loyal followers in the process. However, with the release of the EPA's fuel economy ratings today, Subaru's followers may have to brace themselves for some bad news.

Subaru's sportier and more potent 2.5 GT and 3.6R variants provide noticeably below average fuel efficiency at only 18mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway with a combined efficiency of only 21mpg. These figures are only marginally better than some SUVs and not quite competitive in its class.

These figures are likely to come down once the vehicle is in the real world. The 2.5i that comes with the six-speed manual transmission is rated at 19mpg and 27mpg in the city and highway, respectively for a combined efficiency rating of 22mpg, is not enough to paint a better picture.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy may have the agility and fun-to-drive spirit of the previous model but it is all-new and is built on a new platform that increases room and comfort. These changes make the Legacy an ideal candidate for the VIP ("bippu") treatment.
