Subaru’s best sellers get a special edition look for Tokyo

Subaru is currently on fire. The Japanese automaker recently revealed to us the STI S208 as well as the BRZ STI Sport Edition that will both head to the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show next month. But other than that, they also announced that their three best-selling models, namely the XV, Impreza, and Outback will come in special variants wearing unique visual updates.

“Fun Adventure Concept” is what the XV will be embodying, and so Subaru is giving it new exterior features to give it better off-roading capabilities. It will be wearing a bright yellow paint with black accents like the cladding on the front fascia, side fenders and rear diffuser. It seems like the suspension had been adjusted to lift it a little off the ground. And the bike rack on the roof gives it a more off-road, or should we way rugged look?

If you are not into off roaders and prefer a more upscale model, you might find this Subaru Outback more interesting. Inside the cabin, it gets a higher-quality finish combined with the “ultrasuede” seats and panels and dark embossed silver accents. As for technology, it is now equipped with a new eight-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the outside, the grille has been made to look more aggressive, while new tires have been added to finish off the more luxurious treatment.

2018 Subaru Outback at the 2017 New York Auto Show

It looks like 2018 is going to be a very busy year for Subaru. Not only did the Japanese automaker have its name changed early this month (from Fuji Heavy Industries to Subaru Corporation), it has also made quite a bit of updating for its current lineup. Joining the updated models such as the Legacy and Crosstrek, is the 2018 Subaru Outback.

The Outback is Subaru’s most popular high-riding wagon, so that the upcoming 2018 model year will come back fresher and better. The 2018 Subaru Outback made its debut at the 2017 New York Auto Show and is expected to hit dealerships this summer. That fast, eh!

Just like the new Legacy and Crosstrek, the 2018 Outback features a more chiseled appearance – a look that Subaru aims to achieve for its models. The more angular look at the corners of its front end is formed because its headlights now have sharper corners resulting to the Outbacks’ “more rugged appearance”. The front fascia of the 2018 Outback is restructured so that it now features larger grille openings, with its sculpting highlighting the crossover’s huge fog lights. Also, it features a new front cladding which Subaru claims, improves protection from mud and stones on off-road trips. All these modifications however did not change the car’s overall ground clearance, remaining at only 8.7 inches or 221 millimeters.

The vehicle who hopes to steal the attention from the 2018 Hyundai Sonata is the refreshed 2018 Subaru Outback which will also make its debut at the same Auto Show this week.

Also hoping to hog the spotlight is the 2018 Buick Regal TourX, a more elevated wagon that has a classic all wheel drive hoping to steer consumers away from purchasing a crossover or an SUV.

The all-new 2015 Subaru Outback was officially introduced today at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. The Subaru Outback has been known for its combination of comfort, good, interior space, excellent on-road handling and for its off-road capability and ground clearance. Now, the 2014 model of this vehicle boasts of improved handling thanks to revised suspension components and the latest variant of Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control.

The 2014 Subaru Outback also boasts of a revised design for both the interior and exterior. But what makes the 2014 Subaru Outback more appealing is the first marriage of the popular 2.0-litre Boxer diesel engine and a Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission), resulting to significant improvements in driveability, fuel economy and emissions. With the new engine and gearbox combo, the 2014 Subaru Outback is able to return 44.8 mpg and 166g/km carbon dioxide on the combined cycle.

Subaru Legacy and Outback both received “superior” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in its first ratings of automatic braking systems. During the tests, both Legacy and Outback detected a dummy car on the road and managed to decelerate from 25 mph to a stop in time to avoid slamming into it.

This was all thanks to Subaru’s EyeSight system, a package of cameras and software that scans the road ahead for possible obstruction. The Legacy and Outback were among the vehicles tested that managed a full stop.

Five other models -- the Cadillac ATS and SRX, Volvo S60 and XC60, and Mercedes-Benz C class – also received "superior" rating from the IIHS as they managed to slow down sufficiently after sensing the dummy car.

Volkswagen Group of America may launch a rugged, all-wheel-drive wagon based on the next-generation Golf to rival the Subaru Outback, Automotive News reported, citing sources privy to the carmaker’s product plans. VW has approved an all-wheel-drive version of the redesigned Golf-based Jetta SportWagen, which will be rolled out in the United States in late 2014.

According to sources, the German carmaker is high likely to turn the AWD version into a spin-off model with higher ground clearance and body cladding, which is similar to the Alltrack concept unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show. VW is already selling a model -- a modified Passat wagon called the Passat Alltrack -- that rivals the Subaru Outback in Australia.

The German carmaker, however, discontinued the Passat wagon in the US when it introduced the Chattanooga-built Passat in 2011. An AWD Outback powered by a 2.5-liter engine paired to a six-speed manual has a starting price of $23,495.

Subaru of America, Inc. has disclosed the pricing for its 2014 Legacy and Outback model lines. The 2014 Subaru Legacy has a starting price of $20,295, making it one the most affordable midsize all-wheel drive sedan in the United States. On the other hand, the 2014 Subaru Outback has a base price of $23,495.

All are manufacturer suggested retail prices, before the $795 destination charge for Legacy models and $825 for Outback models. All 2014 Legacy and Outback models are fitted with the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, yet carry starting prices similar to rival non-AWD vehicles.

The Legacy 2.5i and Outback 2.5i models are powered by the new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder BOXER engine that provides 173-horsepower and yet boasts of better fuel economy.

In order to boost its sales in the United States even more, it appears that Volkswagen wants to introduce a crossover version of the next-generation Jetta SportWagen. Inspired by the recently introduced Passat Alltrack, the new vehicle will take on popular cars such as the Subaru Outback and will offer uniquely styled bumpers and graphics as well as new wheel-arch cladding and new interior trims.

Vw already tested the American public with the Passat Alltrack Concept at the 2012 New York Auto Show. According to Automotive News, the new car will get the name Jetta Alltrack for the United States, while in Europe might be sold as the Golf Alltrack. Still, do not expect to be a real crossover, as the vehicle will be offered as standard with front-wheel drive, while the all-wheel drive will be offered as an option.

Apparently, the new Jetta Alltrack will be introduced as the next-generation Tiguan, due in 2014, will be bigger and will offer an optional third row of seats. Mexico will be the place where the new crossover will be assembled, alongside with the upcoming Jetta sedan and SportWagen but also with the upcoming four-door-style coupe based on the same Jetta. Regarding the engines, we will see direct-injection gasoline and diesel powerplants.

Subaru will expand its Lafayette plant in Indiana to increase production of the Legacy sedan and wagon as well as the Outback crossover. The 52,000-square-foot expansion of the facility's body assembly section costs $75 million. This project will begin this summer and will raise the factory's capacity to 180,000 units during regular shifts, the automaker revealed.

Subaru said that the present limit is 156,000 vehicles on straight time. The expansion is also anticipated to bring 100 full-time jobs, according to the company. The Lafayette facility has 3,600 employees, with at least 600 jobs added since 2009. It also manufactures the Tribeca SUV as well as Toyota's Camry sedan.

The expansion confirms plans for more North American capacity, which Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries hinted during a May 8 press conference in Japan. Subaru recently dismissed a plan to manufacture vehicles in China by 2016.

Sales of the 2012 Impreza, Legacy and Outback models from Subaru were halted on Nov. 25 over complaints on increased brake pedal travel. In addition, the recall for about 3,000 units already delivered to their owners has been issued. Parent company Fuji Heavy Industries said that the company got about 130 reports of the brakes being defective.

So far, it has confirmed the flaw on three vehicles. Subaru of America spokesman Michael McHale said that several customers have complained that the brakes “didn't feel right” and that the pedal travelled farther than it should.

However, he reiterated that there were no failure issues and accidents. Subaru would need to replace the master cylinder in order to repair the vehicle. McHale said that the 130 field reports originated from either dealers or dealership personnel that handle the cars. The NHTSA has already been informed and the recall notices are currently being distributed to vehicle owners.

At the Black Hat security conference that took place recently in Las Vegas, there was a demonstration of the Subaru Outback being unlocked and its engine being started remotely. The event was conducted by two security researchers from iSec Partners named Don Bailey and Matthew Solnik.

They got an Android phone and used a technique they referred to as 'war texting' wherein they used two unnamed remote control products that are for locking and unlocking.

After setting up their own GSM network, it took them just two hours to intercept the password authentication messages between the server and the car. They said that this technique could be used to hit other systems that receive firmware updates through text messages.

All carmakers would want to have Subaru's main problem  which is keeping up with the high demand for a product. The Outback wagon has had tremendous success ever since it debuted last summer. It's no wonder that Subaru got the highest percentage US sales increase of any brand last year. In fact, Subaru is expected to continue to outpace the market for the rest of 2010.

Starting December, Subaru of Indiana Automotive has boosted the speed of production at its plant for two times now. There are plans to increase the pace again in April and another time in July, with each push standing for a 5%-6% increase in line speed.

Motokiyo Nomura, Subaru of Indiana CEO, said that the plant workers are already working overtime daily and coming in on Saturdays too.
