Toyota finally unwraps the GR HV Sports Concept with Targa top

Recently, Toyota developed its newest sports car range, the GR nameplate, which will make its way to Tokyo as production models. This will hopefully include the brand new Supra that Toyota has been developing with BMW. But together with these models will be the GR HV Sports Concept, which will make its very first appearance in public. It is a two-seater performance vehicle with a Targa roof similar to that of Toyota’s Le Mans prototype, the TS050 Hybrid race car.

The engine can be found up front, but it brings power to the rear wheels. There are some things about the GR HV Sports concept that will remind you of the TS050 Hybrid. For instance, the unique headlights upfront come with stacks of LED clusters where there are two horizontal units floating on top of three vertical headlights.

And that is not all, the design of the concept’s alloy wheels, as well as the spoiler, is also similar to that of the TS050 Hybrid. However, once you move on to the side profile of the car, it looks more like the existing 86. But then, it looks different up front and at the rear, also because it comes with a Targa configuration and not a regular fixed metal roof. It is also a little wider than the 86, and is 5mm taller. Speaking of the 86, Toyota once came out with a concept, which they called the FT-86. It was a convertible 86 that unfortunately never reached production stage.

Volkswagen Renntransporter is home on the wheels for your Porsche 935

Just last month, Porsche unveiled the new 935 during the “Rennsport Reunion” motorsport event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California. Featuring a body evoking the legendary Porsche 935/78, the 935 is definitely a race car you would want to drive in the track. Nonetheless, it isn't car you can just drive on the road from your garage to the track. After all, the 935 is a track-only race car and can’t be driven legally on the road.

The problem of getting a track-only race car from a garage to the circuit without circumventing any laws or local ordinances has already been solved a long time ago. To solve such a logistic issue, teams or carmakers have been using transporters, which can be large enough to accommodate more than one race car.

Such a situation is the main theme of one of the latest creative visual projects of Igor Shikitov, an automotive designer from Moscow, Russia. Posted at the Behance social creative site on October 3, 2018, Shikitov’s work was aptly titled “Volkswagen Renntransporter.” After all Porsche is now part of the Volkswagen Group.

Nissan took visitors at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show to the stars when it collaborated with Lucasfilm and displayed six Star Wars-themed vehicles. Now, Nissan is taking the visitors at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles (also called Hannover Motor Show) to the dark sky with its latest creation – the all-new Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept.

A product of collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), the United Kingdom-developed Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept is all suited to do its job. Astronomers at ESA have been mapping the stars through the Gaia satellite. In fact, this project has already resulted to the observation of more than a billion stars. However, light pollution – especially from urban – makes the stars less visible. Thus, astronomers have been conducted follow-up observations from remote, hard-to-reach locations, also called as so-called "dark sky" places. In doing so, ESA’s astronomers have to bring them powerful telescopes, which have to transported safely and easily.

Embodying the Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept is appropriately suited to support this project. It is a solution to the enigma of how to transport telescopes for dark sky observations of the universe. It is properly equipped to tow on a bespoke off-road trailer the ultrahigh-power, observatory-class PlaneWave telescope, which can deliver detailed views of distant galaxies and nebulae.

Audi has unveiled an all-electric concept car at the Pebble Beach Automotive Week in Monterey, California that visualizes a radical electrically powered driving machine for both the road and the race track. The all-electric Audi PB18 e-tron Concept is essentially a design and technical study of a futuristic high-performance sports car.

Basically, the PB18 e-tron boasts of a technical concept built from Audi's years of victories at the Le Mans, as implemented through the carmaker’s high-performance arm -- Audi Sport GmbH. The “PB18” in its name refers to the place and year (Pebble Beach and 2018) it was unveiled, while the “e-tron” signifies the fact that the concept shares the technological DNA with the Audi R18 e-tron, the carmaker’s high successful LMP1 racing car.

In terms of dimensions, the PB18 e-tron is similar to a classical sports car – it measures 4.53 meters (14.5 ft.) in length, 2 meters (6.4 ft.) in width and 1.15 meters (4.6 ft) in height, with wheelbase of 2.70 meters (8.9 ft) and short overhangs.

For the past years, Mercedes-Benz has been unveiling spectacular concepts or visions. There were the AMG Vision GT and the Concept IAA, as well as the Vision Maybach 6 and the Vision Maybach 6 Cabriolet. Its latest concept, unveiled at the Monterey Car Week, is likewise nothing short of stunning while showing off the carmaker’s glorious past. This concept is the new Mercedes-Benz Vision EQ Silver Arrow.

Just by looking at this concept, people can’t help but associate with Mercedes’ Grand Prix racing cars in the 1930s. During this period, Mercedes cars were called Silver Arrows. Actually, the new Vision EQ Silver Arrow is inspired by and pays tribute to the 1937 Mercedes W125 Grand Prix racing car. Driven by the legendary Rudolf Caracciola, the W125 set a new speed record on public roads in 1937 after averaging 432.7 km/h (268.8 mph) on the A5 autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. This record sat untouched for around 80 years, until it was broken in November 2017.

Just like the 1937 W125, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow features a long and extended front section and short front overhang. The round cockpit glazing of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow -- modeled on a drop of water in terms of outline and cross-section – was also inspired by the W125. Similar to the Silver Arrows, this one-seater concept is wrapped in alubeam silver paint.

After the German automaker unveiled a new 911 Speedster Concept on Friday, we are starting to think that Porsche’s long line of Speedster models could expand again. Just like the newest 911, the Speedster concept uses a familiar formula by chopping the windshield and position it at a more aggressive angle, get rid of the vestigial rear seats and add a new double bubble cover to replace the 911’s vestigial rear seats.

All this can be found in the Speedster Concept, with the latter item made of carbon fiber. Speedsters also often get rid of the electric roof. Porsche did not provide us with any photos of the lightweight cover on the Speedster Concept, but it did confirm that the unit will provide some weather protection.

Under the beltline, Porsche used the body of a 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. But instead of using the 911’s traditional mirrors, we instead used a set of chromed, Talbot style racing mirrors, which are also probably the coolest mirrors on this planet. The rest of the body is then dressed in GT Silver and White paint, just like that of Porsche’s racers of yesteryear. On both sides, there is a huge number 70 in a white circle, which gives tribute to the automaker’s seventieth anniversary, below that, of course is the Porsche lettering. The automaker also modified the headlights with a cover that’s reminiscent of old racing headlights.

Of all automotive brands, the last automaker you could think to slap its badge on a convertible SUV, would probably be Skoda. But their new Sunroq is actually what that is - a droptop version of the compact Karoq, the latest concept to come from Mladá Boleslav. The concept actually began in October 2017 when a team of 23 students from Skoda’s own trade school got together to work on a one-off project.

Do not get us wrong though, because the automaker is not planning to chop off the compact crossover’s roof for a production version since the Sunroq will remain purely a concept car to demonstrate the skills of Skoda’s vocational school. These students are very talented and they took the roles of engineers and designers, but of course, actual professionals lent a helping hand during the development process of turning the Karoq into a convertible.

The Czech Republican crossover loses its model’s roof. However, they have kept the rear doors as well as the rear seats to maintain that high level of practicality you would expect from a Skoda. Of course, Skoda keeps it’s vehicle interesting, as you can see here, the automaker’s logo is projected onto the road by LEDs mounted underneath the concept’s front bumper. You can actually get those on the production Karoq where these are mounted underneath the front doors.

Have you been thinking of getting yourself a hardcore Volkswagen Golf GTI? Well, if you have, you might want to hear this first - the track-only TCR version is going to receive a road-legal equivalent in the near future. Watch out for the Golf GTI TCR as it makes its debut on May 9 during the annual GTI meeting, which will be held at Worthersee. Without a surprise, this will be billed as a special edition model. Therefore, there is a good chance it will end up being a limited run hot hatch.

Right now, the only part of the car we could really see would be a section of the car’s rear end, and it is only through an appealing digital sketch that shows off the aggressive fins of the diffuser flanked by a pair of huge exhaust tips. By the looks of it, it seems like the Golf GTI TCR has full LED taillights and it rides on what seems like a set of 18 inch wheels.

Under the hood, you’ll find a turbocharged 2.0 liter gasoline engine dialed to carry out as much as 286 horsepower (213 kilowatts) from 6,800 rpm as well as a peak torque of 273 pound feet (370 Newton metres) that starts from 1,600 rpm. This engine will be paired to a seven speed dual clutch automatic gearbox offered as standard equipment, together with the front axle differential lock. Just to remind you, the track ready model is still a lot more powerful with 345 horsepower and 310 pound feet (420 Nm) of torque.
