Audi A6 TDI ultra drives through 14 countries with no fuel stops

Driving through 14 countries on one tank of fuel earned Audi and the RAC a new Guinness World Record title. For this challenge, the unmodified Audi A6 TDI ultra was chosen. The vehicle easily surpassed its official rating of 67mpg with an average of 75.9mpg. It completed 1158.9 miles without requiring a fuel-stop.

For almost 28 hours, the A6 TDI ultra was driven by motoring journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson from the Netherlands to Hungary, while passing through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.

According to Head of Audi UK Public Relations Jon Zammett, the automaker proved that with the latest engine technology, it can achieve real-world economy of nearly 76 mpg or more after having covered a large portion of Europe on just one fill-up.

2015 Audi A3 TDI Ultra unveiled in UK! Boasts 83 mpg economy, 89 g/km emissions

The A3 compact hatchback now gets the ‘ultra’ badge, which means that this model now offers the most outstanding fuel economy and the most rigorously controlled emissions in five Audi ranges. The new A3 and A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI ultra models are capable of returning 83mpg and has CO2 emissions of only 89g/km.

These vehicles are included in an expanded 2016 Model Year A3 lineup that makes the quattro all-wheel-drive more accessible to consumers. Ordering has started for these vehicles. Buyers in the UK are expected to get them in August. The A3 represents the ideal foundation for an ultra model as it features optimized aerodynamics and is 80 kg lighter than its predecessor because of its advanced lightweight construction.

Audi had to modify the final drive ratio in the standard six-speed manual transmission that works with the EU6-compliant 1.6 TDI engine in order to build the A3 1.6 TDI ultra. The lowered sports suspension was incorporated and rolling resistance was minimized with the help of special tires.

2015 VW Touareg Facelift receives a more powerful, yet fuel-efficient V6 TDI engine

The 2015 VW Touareg Facelift not only received an updated design but also an upgraded V6 diesel engine. According to the German manufacturer, over 90 percent of all Touareg models sold in Europe are equipped with a V6 TDI engine and as a result, Volkswagen modified and upgraded the engine by adding an SCR catalytic converter.

Thanks to the new catalytic converter the engine meets the Euro 6 emissions standard. Volkswagen offers two versions of the V6 TDI engine. The first one delivers 204 hp (150 kW) and due to the addition of the standard 8-speed automatic transmission, fuel consumption was reduced from 7.0 to 6.6 liters of diesel per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of 173 g/km.

The second version of the V6 TDI engine was boosted from 245 hp (180 kW) to 262 hp (193 kW) and thanks to the new 8-speed transmission fuel consumption falls from 7.2 to 6.6 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 174 g/km of CO2.

Audi decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its TDI technology in style and as a result it revealed the A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI Competition Edition model. The new model comes with new modifications in the charging and camshafts of the 3.0-liter TDI biturbo diesel engine that boost the power by 7 hp (5 kW) to 326 hp (240 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque between 1,400 and 2,800 rpm.

With these numbers, the 2015 A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI Competition Edition sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds, while top speed is limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph. Despite the impressive performances, fuel consumption remains low at 6.1 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers (38.6 US mpg), while CO2 emissions are 162 grams per kilometer.

Moreover, the special edition model features the S line sport package, which also includes lowering the body by 20 millimeters (0.8 in), as well as 20-inch five-spoke W design with black painted sides. Behind the wheels are the red brake calipers and 17-inch brake discs.

Audi released the official details and specs of its latest concept, the RS5 TDI. As we previously told you, the RS5 TDI Concept is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo diesel engine that generates 385 hp (283 kW) and 750 Nm (5523 lb-ft) of torque from 1,250 to 2,000 rpm.

What’s more interesting is that the engine also features an electric turbocharger that provides staggering power when starting off. An electric motor was used to replace the turbine wheel and accelerate the compressor wheel to over 70,000 rpm in just a few hundredths of a second.

In addition, the exhaust turbochargers also provide as much as 2.4 bar of relative boost pressure. The engine pushes the RS5 TDI Concept from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds, to 200 km/h (124 mph) in less than 16 seconds, while top speed is limited at 280 km/h (174 mph).

Audi RS5 eTurbo TDI Concept is the latest creation from Ingolstadt, powered by a two-stage turbodiesel engine. This is the first-even diesel-powered RS model from Audi and according to Autocar, it is expected to go into production next year.

As we said, this new engine uses a two-stage turbocharger: a smaller turbo that is lighter and gives the engine more grunt at lower engine speeds, while the bigger turbo starts spinning at higher speeds.

What’s more interesting is that the engine uses electrical assistance to be sure that the smaller turbocharger is spinning quickly enough to be active at very low engine speeds. This means that the V6 TDI BiTurbo diesel engine comes fitteed with an electric compressor.

Audi is so confident that vehicle buyers in the United States will embrace diesel that it is bringing back diesel-powered five-door version of the A3 compact to the country next summer, the German carmaker announced ahead of the New York Auto Show. The A3 five-door will be powered by a 2-liter TDI engine.

Audi withdrew the last-generation A3 hatch from the US at the end of the 2013 model year, but the compact managed to capture “an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base,” Audi of America President Scott Keogh said in a statement. Keogh said the five-door version of the A3 compact has been one of Audi’s most requested models since they unveiled the new A3 family.

The diesel A3 will be competing against entry-level luxury cars like the Lexus CT hybrid, a similarly sized hatch having a starting price of $32,960 including shipping. Lexus sold 15,071 CT hybrids in 2013 in the US while Audi delivered just 7,205 units of the previous A3 hatch in 2012. The sales figure in 2012 showed that around 55 percent of A3 buyers opted for the TDI engine.

The Volkswagen Golf TDI BlueMotion could now boast of being a true three-litre car after using only 2.92 litres of diesel per 100 kilometers on a DEKRA-supervised test run from Nantes, France to Copenhagen, Denmark. Powered by a 110 PS TDI engine, the Golf TDI BlueMotion used just a single 50 litre tank of fuel to travel 1,602 kilometers, or equivalent to 97 mpg.

Simon Thomas, head of Marketing of the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, described the test result as “really impressive result” noting that the trip – dubbed as the “Think Blue. Eco Ride.” -- showed that the combination of fuel-saving BlueMotion efficiency technology and a well-planned proactive driving approach could result to economy figures that are hard to match. The Volkswagen Golf TDI BlueMotion started from Nantes, France, and passed through Paris, Antwerp, Bremen and Hamburg, and then to Copenhagen.

The “Think Blue. Eco Ride.” showed that the standard consumption figure based on the NEDC driving cycle, pegged at 3.2 liters per 100 kilometers (88.3 mpg) and 85 grams of CO2 per kilometer, can be surpassed.

Audi will be offering a TDI engine as an option for its next-generation A4 sedan in the United States as it extends its target to sell more diesel engines in the country. Audi will be rolling out a new version of the A4 in 2014. Audi skipped the current model in November 2012 when it disclosed plans to offer four more TDI models in the US.

Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, said that dealerships in the US will receive the Audi A4 with a two-liter TDI engine after the new generation arrives. Audi’s decision to offer a TDI engine-powered A4 in the US reflects a strategy to meet rising corporate average fuel economy standards without jeopardizing torque.

Although diesel is more expensive than regular unleaded gasoline in the US, brands like Jeep, Chevrolet and Mazda have recently launched diesel-powered models to take advantage of their better fuel economy. Keogh said that Audi decided to wait on plans to roll out a TDI version of the A4 to the US until the model’s redesign.

Audi has revealed the pricing and fuel economy figures for the 2014 A8 L TDI sedan. The A8 is one of four Audi models that will get a diesel option for the 2014 model year. The others are the Q5, A6 and A7. When the A8 L TDI arrives at the market in the spring, it will be priced from $83,395 (including destination costs).

This slots the oil-burner below the $88,095 4.0L twin-turbo V8 model but higher than the $79,395 3.0L supercharged V6 variant in the long-wheelbase A8 lineup.

Audi A8 L TDI has a 24/36 city/highway mpg EPA rating, making it much more efficient than any of the gasoline-powered options. In addition, its fuel economy will be better than the rating of the only other diesel full-size luxury sedan offered in the U.S. -- the Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC with a rating of 21/31 mpg.

The new Audi SQ5 TDI high-performance SUV is the first ever diesel-fuelled ‘S’ model to be seen on UK roads. Audi marks this milestone just six years after the Audi R10 became a part of history as the first ever sports prototype under TDI power to be a champion at Le Mans. The new high-performance SUV gives consumers a blend of 313PS and 41mpg-plus capability.

Audi has already started to take orders for this model, which has a price tag of £43,870 OTR. Deliveries in the UK will start next spring. The SQ5 TDI is able to do justice to the ‘S’ badge and also demonstrates the famous TDI frugality by using the newest 3.0-litre V6 BiTDI engine, which produces the 313PS output, delivered between 3,900 and 4,500rpm, with a peak 650 Nm of torque relayed between 1,450 and 2,800 rpm.

SQ5 TDI is able to channel its power through an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and via quattro all-wheel-drive. This enables the model to go from zero to 62mph in just 5.1 seconds and proceed to a limited 155mph top speed. The model utilizes innovative thermal management on the engine start-stop system and a regulated oil pump, enabling it to return 41.5mpg, under the official combined cycle test, resulting to a CO2 emissions level of 179g/km.

Earlier this year, Audi unveiled the SQ5 TDI, the new top model of the Q5 model series but for this year’s Paris Motor Show the German manufacturer will bring a new version of the Q5: this is the SQ5 TDI Audi Exclusive Concept. The so-called concept will feature new design solutions in the interior and an exclusive exterior finish and Audi will manufacture only 50 units beginning the first quarter of 2013.

The bad news is that this limited edition will be priced at €92,000 in Germany, which is quite a lot because a standard SQ5 TDI will be available for €58,500. Still, don’t think that for these money you won’t get anything because you are wrong. The SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept is finished in the Aral Blue crystal effect exterior color, which was developed for the exclusive, limited production model.

Moreover, the car features exterior mirrors with aluminum look while the rear shows four exhaust tailpipes. Inside, we find a leather multifunction sports steering wheel, a gear leather wrapped in Fine Nappa accentuated with contrasting stitching in snow white, black sport seats covered in Fine Nappa leather which feature the same contrasting stitching in snow white and black, woven leather in the center section of the seats (first time that woven leather has been used in a production vehicle).

The third is a hybrid 2.0-liter turbo-four with a 44-hp electric motor that offers a combined output of 208-hp. The V6 diesel engine is the same powerplant used in the European SQ5 TDI model however, it would use a detuned version as the European-spec engine delivers 313-hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Audi claims that the diesel Q5 accelerate to 60-mph in less than 6.5 seconds. According to the European cycle, it can return about 37-mpg. EPA figures would be lower but we won’t know the exact figure until the model is about to arrive at showrooms in the summer.

The record for the longest distance driven on one-tank of fuel has recently been broken by John and Helen Taylor who used a 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI to get from Houston, Texas to Sterling, Virginia. The Australian couple drove 1626 miles on one tank of fuel. Going past nine states took them three days to complete.

When the Passat is fitted with the six-speed manual, it has an EPA rating of 35 mpg. But what the Taylors got for their single tank was a return of 84.1 mpg, almost two times the Passat TDI’s highway rating of 43 mpg. The Taylors broke the old record of 1526.6 miles, which was held by a previous-generation, Euro-spec Passat that had a 1.6-liter BlueMotion diesel.

To verify the record, police officers from both Texas and Virginia checked the fueling, mileage, and sealing of the fuel door. The U.S.-spec Passat that the Taylors used was completely stocked with a 2.0-liter, four cylinder turbodiesel (140-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque) mated to a six-speed manual transmission. This vehicle carried 120 pounds of luggage and was driven through the usual traffic situations.
