The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has made the 2014 Chevrolet Spark a Top Safety Pick after the minicar attained the highest possible “good” scores in the agency’s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints tests. The 2014 Spark also achieved an “acceptable” score in IIHS’s new small overlap test, which emulates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle hits another vehicle or an object like a tree.
“Spark’s impressive performance in IIHS’s most stringent test yet demonstrates the intensive efforts of our global safety team to deliver big safety in a small package,” remarked Gay Kent, General Motors general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness. He said that the safety structure of the Spark extensively employs high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, adding that the minicar’s passenger protection package boasts of 10 standard air bags.
Since the Spark has a short wheelbase of 93.5 inches, the team had to strengthen its front-end structure to better absorb and distribute impact energy around passengers. The team also paved the way for a cradle extension for additional support in frontal collisions. Lightweight, high-strength steels account for over 62 percent of Spark’s under body and 42 percent of its upper body.Read the entire article 2014 Chevrolet Spark is Top Safety Pick for IIHS
The 2014 Maserati Ghibli is now a 2013 Top Safety Pick for the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. The Ghibli is powered by a 404hp twin-turbo V6 from Ferrari paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This four-door sedan is available in either rear or Q4 all-wheel-drive. The Ghibli, featuring coupé-like looks, is touted to be 'The Absolute Opposite of Ordinary' in the mid-size segment – as it effortlessly merges performance, style and luxury.
The accolade from the IIHS further boosts the pedigree of the Ghibli as a thoroughbred driving unit. A 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick also further boosts the Ghibli's badge as a 'top pick' among sport sedan buyers.
IIHS Top Safety Pick testing simulates a side collision with a large sports utility vehicle or pickup truck; front moderate overlap impact; roof-crush consistent with a rollover; and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash. In each test, the Ghibli scored "good," the highest-possible rating. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has been given the Top Safety Pick + award thanks to its “Good” rating in the small overlap crash test. This newest test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been a challenge that many vehicles have failed to overcome.
This rating, a first for any Mercedes model, can be applied to 2014 M-Class models made after August 2013, as Mercedes-Benz has reinforced the door sills of the M-Class to make it perform better in the small overlap test.
Apparently, these modifications were effective since the IIHS has determined that the M-Class was able to maintain the driver’s space well. This means that there’s a low risk of significant injuries. In addition, the M-Class got “Good” ratings in all other IIHS tests, including moderate overlap front, side crash test, roof strength, and head restraints and seats.Read the entire article 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class gets Top Safety Pick+ award
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given Top Safety Pick+ honors to the 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan. The updated minivan received a "good" rating on the so-called small overlap crash test, which simulates what may happen if a vehicle’s left front corner collides with an object like an oncoming car, a tree or a pole.
Honda freshened the Odyssey for 2014 by installing a strengthened steel frame and more robust airbags, instead of waiting for the next redesign of the minivan, which is still a few years from now.
Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda Motor Co., said in a statement, remarked tha the carmaker’s commitment to safety is “perhaps best demonstrated by the fact” that they achieved a high standard in a midcycle refresh, referring to the rating received by the 2014 Honda Odyssey.Read the entire article 2014 Honda Odyssey gets Top Safety Pick+ honors from IIHS
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety handed “Top Safety Pick+” honors to the Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport after the small sport utility vehicles aced the group’s "small overlap" crash test. In fact, the Forester and the Outlander Sport were the only small SUVs that sailed through the innovative small overlap crash test, in which the front corner of a vehicle on the driver's side collides against a five-foot-tall barrier at 40 mph.
The redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester received “Top Safety Pick+” honors after getting a "good" rating on the test. Joe Nolan, vice president for vehicle research at IIHS, said in a statement that the Subaru's engineers succeeded in doing well in the new test with the redesigned Forester.
Nolan remarked that this is exactly how IIHS hoped carmakers would respond to improve protection for people in these types of serious frontal crashes. The IIHS said that 20 vehicles have now received Top Safety Pick+ accolades for safety in small overlap crashes.Read the entire article Small SUVs from Subaru and Mitsubishi given Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded Acura’s 2013 TL with a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating. This is considered as one of the highest ratings that the IIHS hands out. The award was obtained despite stricter standards set by the IIHS.
The guidelines now include the small overlap frontal crash test. This is a test designed to show the collision of a vehicle running at a certain speed and a fixed object, where 25% of the car’s front structure comes into contact with the object.
Aside from the TL model, the ILX, MDX, RDX, and TSX models have all received the TOP SAFETY PICK+ ratings as well. All five models have also been rated GOOD in all four different rating categories.Read the entire article 2013 Acura TL gets Top Safety rating despite stricter rules

These are all of Ford’s sedans and hatchbacks: Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus; and crossovers: Escape, Edge, Explorer, and Flex; and the crew-cab F-150 pickup.
Fusion was chosen as a Top Safety Pick because it earned a “good” rating in the moderate overlap frontal, side, rollover and rear impact crash tests. The 2013 Fusion is not the only model in the midsize segment to be a Top Safety Pick. The same rating was earned by its rivals: Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat, and Chevrolet Malibu.
The IIHS has yet to test and rate the new 2013 Honda Accord but the 2012 Accord was previously named a Top Safety Pick. Reid Bigland, chief of Chrysler's Dodge brand, said that its engineers were able to deliver on their high expectations for the Dart.
Russ Rader, IIHS spokesman, said that the IIHS tested 180 vehicles for the 2012 model year. From that batch, 132 were awarded the Top Safety Pick designation. This December, the IIHS will issue its annual list of the safety report for vehicles available in the U.S. market.Read the entire article Dodge Dart, Lexus ES 350, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru XV Crosstrek named Top Safety Picks
