Toyota will not offer the Avensis Hybrid, places doubt on the prospect of the mid-sized car

The European unit of Toyota Motor Corp. is not planning to offer a hybrid version of the Toyota Avensis, placing doubt on the prospect of the mid-sized car. While the unit has plans to offer hybrid versions of every model sold in the Europe by 2020, the Avensis was left out, Toyota’s regional boss Didier Leroy told Automotive News Europe.

He clarified that Toyota still plans to offer a hybrid model in the mid-sized segment in the in the next five to seven years. He quipped that the carmaker will have to decide whether it has to develop a Europe-specific sedan and wagon like the Avensis or instead offer a more global product.

A possible decision to drop the Avensis comes as sales in the mid-sized segment in western Europe is seen to succumb to its lowest this decade. Sales in the segment could drop to below a half-million units this year from more than 800,000 in 2011, according to IHS Automotive, with customers flocking to luxury offerings or volume crossovers.

Toyota starts production of the 2012 Avensis at Burnaston factory

Toyota has begun producing the new Avensis at its Burnaston factory. The company has also announced prices for the new vehicle, which complement those for the current model, despite the extra equipment, improved performance and new styling on offer. The launch of the revamped Avensis reiterates the company's dedication to Burnaston and to UK manufacturing. The new Avensis will be available in showrooms by early next year. Burnaston is the company's biggest production site in Europe.

It has benefited from a £1.15 billion investment since it was founded in 1992. As the centre for all Avensis production, the site has manufactured three generations of the model since 1997.

The new Avensis, which was revealed at the Frankfurt motor show this year, is founded on the spaciousness, fuel efficiency and practicality that are the established characteristic qualities of the model, providing sharper modern styling, a more comfortable and quieter cabin, and enhanced driving dynamics.

European styling and engineering in Japan has been in high demand, prompting Toyota to decide to export the Toyota Avensis, produced only at its UK factory in Burnaston, to its domestic market. The third-generation Avensis will start to arrive in Japan later this year, adding one more country to the other 47 worldwide.

Toyota will offer the Avensis Tourer estate versions that will feature a 2.0-liter petrol engine with Multidrive S continuously variable transmission (CVT), resulting to a high fuel economy and a low emissions rating.

Production starts in July. Toyota will start to ship the cars from the UK at a pace of 750 units each month. British Business Secretary Vince Cable said that Toyota exports 85% of the Avensis units and engines it builds at the Burnaston and Deeside plants in the U.K.
