2014 Geneva Motor Show: Toyota Aygo is the perfect city car

We did like the Peugeot 108 and the Citroen C1, which means that we will also love the 2014 Toyota Aygo that was introduced today at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show! Comparing it with the outgoing model, the 2014 Aygo is 25 mm longer to 3,455 mm, while the height was reduced by 5 mm to 1,460 mm. Both front and rear tracks have been widened by 8 mm.

The front end of the car shows the X-graphic, that spreads outwards across the surface of the bodywork and takes in all the vehicle’s main external features, including upper and lower grilles, headlamps, foglamps, and even mirrors and side glazing. The rear end of the new Aygo shows a similar design theme to the front, featuring a tailgate and lower bumper that form break lines in the car’s surface.

The lamp clusters are set within the hexagonal tailgate, while the upper bumper section widens into pronounced wheel arches. Inside, the shape of the centre console is now trapezoidal and sets the theme for the new Aygo. Moreover, the console supports a wide dashboard with a matt, anti-glare finish, set between slim A-pillars.

Toyota Aygo gets a three-star rating at the Euro NCAP crash tests

A three-star rating was given to the Toyota Aygo and its sister cars, the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, in the most recent round of Euro NCAP crash tests. The existing model is a facelifted version of a car that initially got four stars when it was released in 2005 but it’s believed that these cars had a poor performance because Toyota didn’t implement the newest developments in passenger safety.

The Aygo earned three stars since it only tested with a certain number of extra items, which are not presently available, which Toyota has promised to carry over to cars starting in July 2013. Without these features, these cars would have scored much worse. These features include the side thorax airbags, side head curtain airbags, electronic stability control, passenger seatbelt reminder and ISOFIX rear outboard seats.

Dr Michiel Van Ratingen, Euro NCAP secretary general, said that its test protocols have been subjected to significant modifications over the last few years. He added that these several automakers continue to have top-sellers even without implementing the required safety updates.

2012 Toyota Aygo Facelift

The Toyota Aygo received a new facelift for the 2012 model year and we can now say that the small car follows Toyota’s new design language. The first visual impact with the car shows a wider front bumper, with integrated foglights and a large trapezoidal air intake as well as a new set of optional LED daytime running lights.

The upper front grille is now more slender, while the new bonnet design contributes to the car’s overall presence.

The interior has also been improved and now features a new dark gray finish for the upper and lower dashboard sections, as well as a new-design steering wheel that comes with a leather trim plus paddle controls on the steering column for the model that features the Multimode automated manual transmission.
