2017 Euro NCAP crash tests: Toyota C-HR, Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery SUVs earn five stars

We all want to know how safe our vehicles are on the road. Of course, carmakers do brag about the safety levels of their offerings, but it’s really up to unbiased assessment agencies to tell us the real deal. In Europe, the safety levels of new cars are tested by European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). In fact, Euro NCAP just completed its latest round of safety tests, and the results were quite mixed.

For the latest round of testing, six vehicles underwent Euro NCAP’s stringent process: Audi Q5, Citroen C3, Fiat 500, Ford Ka+, Land Rover Discovery and Toyota C-HR. The results of the tests should make the people at Audi, Land Rover and Toyota leap for joy while leave those at Fiat and Ford scratching their heads. Euro NCAP’s overall safety rating is based on assessment in four important areas: Adult protection; Child protection; Pedestrian protection; and Safety Assist technologies. Vehicles are rated overall from one to five stars. The more stars a vehicle has, the safer it is.

According to Euro-NCAP, both the new Audi Q5 luxury SUV and Toyota C-HR subcompact crossover were able to earn five-star ratings from the assessment program, thanks to their good all-round performance. A five-star rating means these vehicles offer overall good performance in crash protection and are well-equipped with robust crash avoidance technology. In particular, the Toyota C-HR scored 95 percent for Adult protection; 77 percent for Child protection; 76 percent for Pedestrian protection; and 78 percent for Safety Assist technologies. The new Audi Q5, meanwhile, earned 93 percent for Adult protection; 86 percent for Child protection; 73 percent for Pedestrian protection; and 58 percent for Safety Assist technologies.

Toyota thinks that the 600 hp C-HR could beat the Honda Civic Type R’s Nurburgring record

Last April, the new Honda Civic Type R made a new record for the current front wheel drive, by going around the Nurburgring and finishing a lap with a time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. But today, Toyota thinks that they have what it takes to beat the Honda Civic Type R’s record, even without a true hot hatchback in their lineup. Rather, it is the C-HR that recently made its debut at the 2017 SEMA Show, with 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) which they think could make a new record.

They say that if the head of the tuning company behind Toyota’s R-Tuned C-HR, Dan Gardner were to decide, the C-HR would already be at the track. In fact, the Japanese automaker believes that it is the “world’s quickest SUV”, and we’re not doubting them. True enough, it has been proven to be faster than the Lamborghini Aventador, the Porsche 911 GT3 and many other supercars as it only took 1 minute 25.22 seconds to go around the Willow Springs Raceway.

Gardner said to Autocar that this model was actually built for SEMA, and so far, the automaker has announced no plans for it. He also described it to be the real deal, and that it is his dream to take the super-SUV to the Nordschleife. And as mentioned earlier, he is confident that it is capable of setting the front-wheel-drive record.

Toyota gives hints of hybrid C-HR, new Land Cruiser ahead of 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show

It is already September and we are all excited about the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, more so because automakers have been revealing previews and teasers (online) of models and concepts that will make their debut at the auto show. Today, it is Toyota that teases us with two new crossovers: the Hybrid C-HR Concept and the new Land Cruiser.

The C-HR Hy-Power Concept is a representation of possible additions for its compact crossover’s engine range. Toyota is being a tease, only providing few details about the vehicle, and that is the crossover’s license plate and lower fascia. Having said that, it makes us think that the model has been given a change in terms of design. And during a press release, the company’s spokesperson did say that the people behind Toyota’s European Design Center will give the C-HR a little bit of facelift to emphasize its emotional and powerful look, while hinting that they will be expanding the company’s hybrid powertrain line. That is all we got from the Hybrid C-HR Concept, and that’s sad because there’s still so much we want to know.

As mentioned earlier, the Japanese automaker also gave us a preview of the new Land Cruiser before it makes its debut in Frankfurt. Though they still kept their mouths sealed, they couldn’t help but share some details regarding the range-topping SUV. One thing we are certain about is that it will still be riding on a body-on-frame chassis.

Audi RS Q5 will be powered by the 2.9-liter bi-turbo V6 from RS 5 Coupe

Audi’s intention to bring out the Renn Sport Racing version of the Q5 was made clear when it unveiled the Audi SQ5 at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show early this year. Amazingly, the new Audi RS Q5 is expected to show off its high-performance nature by having under its elegantly sporty bonnet a powerful engine that is already fitted in the new Audi RS 5 Coupe.

Following the reveal of the SQ5 in January 2017, it was widely expected that Audi would take the wraps off the new RS Q5 at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. To the dismay of many Audi fans and enthusiasts, that unveiling didn’t happen, and the guessing game for the new Audi RS Q5 continues. Of course, one of the matters being debated is the core of the any vehicle – the engine.

As revealed, the Audi SQ5 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 TFSI aluminum engine that delivers 260 kW (354 hp) of max output and 500 Nm (368.8 lb.-ft.) of peak torque available between 1,370 rp and 4,500 rpm. This allows the SQ5 to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 5.4 seconds on the way to reaching an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph).

If you are a fan of matte-finished cars, you are going to love these new Toyotas. For years now, tuning companies have offered the matte look to their clients - and you would see the most common cars, to the rarest ones with this finish. This trend began when BMW offered the Frozen Black M3 to its customers back in 2013. Many other automakers then followed, and now, Toyota is on it too.

As you could see in the photos, the new C-HR and GT86 sports car both got their own matte finishes. Toyota Europe now offers the “Style Selection” option for the C-HR where customers could choose from four exclusive shades including: Metalstream Gray Metallic, Titanium Blue Metallic, Nova White Metallic, and Marlingrau Metallic. For an extra $2,122 (€1,850), customers can get these shades with two unique matte finishes.

Another option customers could add on top of the package would be contrasting onyx black lacquered A and C pillars, side mirrors, roof, and rear spoiler. All these for an extra $160 (€140).

In a move toward building more SUVs and perhaps more projects in the future, Audi is about to introduce a brand new RS model this coming March. And guess what? The latest Audi to be wearing the Renn Sport Racing badge is none other than the Audi Q5. With that being said, the Audi RS Q5 will be the first in the model range to have the performance brand’s profile aside from of course, the existing Audi RS Q3.

With only a few weeks left before the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Audi Sport’s Stephan Winkelmann has finally confirmed they are indeed showcasing 450 horsepower Audi RS Q5 at the event. In a statement, the former Lamborghini CEO mentioned about the significance of the upcoming motor show in Geneva and how the RS will be setting a new era for their B-segment.

Although the Audi RS Q5 will be using the SQ5 platform, the RS portfolio will definitely enhance its performance. Chances are great that it will be using an improved version of the SQ5’s current 3.0 liter V6 petrol engine. If not, then it could also make use of the 2.9-liter V6 engine from Porsche. Speculations are quite strong that its engine will be a joint development between Porsche and Audi. Either way, the RS Q5 is expected to accelerate from 0-62mph under five seconds. The SQ5, as we know, normally runs from 0-62 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds.

You can’t accuse Toyota of being boring. This is particularly true when it unveiled its new Toyota C-HR at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Its design was both innovative and stunning, and was a definitive cross between a coupe and a SUV. Well, that is what its name really means, as C-HR stands for Coupe-High Rider.

Barely a month after commencing sales of the new Toyota C-HR in Japan, the carmaker is showcasing a pair of new C-HR compact crossovers at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon, both dressed by Toyota’s in-house performance and racing tuner, Toyota Racing Development or simply known as TRD. To note, this was not the first time that an in-house tuner at Toyota gave the C-HR a new perspective. If you could remember, Modellista, Toyota’s design division also unveiled new body kits for the new Toyota C-HR crossover -- the “Elegant Ice Style” and “Boost Impulse Style” packages. These packages bring out the elegant and chic character of the new Toyota C-HR.

Of course, TRD won’t be silent regarding Toyota’s latest creation. Just like Modellista, TRD is also offering two styling kits for the C-HR, both aimed at making the crossover look more aggressive and dynamic on the road. These two distinct styling kits -- the “Extreme Style” and “Aggressive Style” design packages – don’t touch the power setup for the new Toyota C-HR. What all these body kits accomplished was to make the new C-HR look more menacing, although the compact crossover already sports an aggressive appearance.

Shortly after launching the latest Toyota crossover, the brand’s in house tuners have also come out with a range of custom upgrades. One of them is Modellista, Toyota’s design division, which offers new body kits for the new C-HR. The distinctively shaped body comes with its “Elegant Ice Style” and “Boost Impulse Style” packages.

All things considered, Modellista has kept the new Toyota C-HR’s drivetrain as with its usual design protocol. In that case, the C-HR is packed with the same 85kW over 185 Nm, 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

In line with this, Toyota TRD has also released its own tuning package. The TRD offers two distinct styling kits, which includes the “Extreme Style” and “Aggressive Style” design upgrades. The new C-HR styling kits are currently available in Japan.

Toyota is getting ready to introduce a production version of the C-HR Concept, which would be targeted towards urban buyers seeking an edgier offering than the RAV4. Toyota unveiled the C-HR concept at the recently 2014 Paris Motor Show. According to Toyota Europe sales chief Karl Schlicht, while the production version of the C-HR "would be a size below the RAV4," it would still be considered a C-compact segment crossover.

The C-HR is 4350mm long and 1500mm tall, slotting it in between the Auris compact hatchback and the RAV4 compact SUV. Schlicht remarked at the sidelines of the show that the target buyers for the C-HR are quite different from those for the RAV-4.

Toyota said in a statement that C-HR concept has the “essential combination” of compact packaging and agility required by customers having active, urban lifestyles. It was powered by a new gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain that provides much improved fuel efficiency.

Audi has a dynamic start this year thanks to strong demand on models such as the A3, Q5 and A6, A7 and R8. In order to maintain the same path, the German manufacturer will boost output of its best-sellers and as a result it added 33 shifts at its German plants in January and February. In February alone, the German company added ten special shifts in Ingolstadt and three in Neckarsulm.

Meanwhile eight additional shifts are planned in Ingolstadt and two more in Neckarsulm this month. Board of Management Member for Production Dr. Frank Dreves: “Our Audi models are very popular all over the world; our order books are full. This makes us confident that we will grow again this year as well. For the coming months, we anticipate ongoing good utilization of capacity and additional shifts at our two domestic plants in Germany.”

“The Works Council approved the special shifts that the management applied for in the first few weeks of the year in order to make our manufacturing as economic as possible. The order situation is excellent and the additional shifts demonstrate the high flexibility of our employees. The workforce is thus making a significant contribution to the competitiveness of the production sites in Germany within the Group’s international production network,” stated the Chairman of Audi’s General Works Council, Peter Mosch.

According to the latest reports from Autocar, it appears that the new Porsche Macan baby SUV will be a completely new car and not just a redesigned Audi Q5. These words came from Porsche’s R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz who also confirmed that the new crossover will make its world debut next year at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Moreover, Hatz also added that despite the fact that it is based on the Audi Q5, the German manufacturer modified every little thing on the Macan. So, everything is new: the engines, transmissions as well as the suspension. We do know that the Porsche Macan will use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine delivering more than 370 hp.

This engine is based on the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter engine found on the bigger Cayenne but also on the Panamera and capable to deliver 300 hp. Hatz also added that Audi should have no fears that the Macan will steal its customers as the new crossover from Porsche wants to attract different people. What’s more interesting is that the Macan will be the first modern-day Porsche that will use four-cylinder engines. Still, these engines will not be available when the car will be launched.

Audi’s SUV lineup available in the U.S. will be getting a Q5 TDI, which features a 3.0-liter V6 diesel powerplant with 245-hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. The current Audi Q5 is offered with three engine choices. The first is a 2.0-liter turbo-four that has an output of 211-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 (272-hp, 295 lb-ft of torque).

The third is a hybrid 2.0-liter turbo-four with a 44-hp electric motor that offers a combined output of 208-hp. The V6 diesel engine is the same powerplant used in the European SQ5 TDI model however, it would use a detuned version as the European-spec engine delivers 313-hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Audi claims that the diesel Q5 accelerate to 60-mph in less than 6.5 seconds. According to the European cycle, it can return about 37-mpg. EPA figures would be lower but we won’t know the exact figure until the model is about to arrive at showrooms in the summer.

At the Michelin Challenge Bibendum on May 18 to 22, Audi had put its experimental Q5 Hybrid Fuel Cell (HFC) on display. This event, which took place at old Berlin airport (Tempelhof), aimed to showcase sustainable mobility technologies.

Through the Q5 HFC, Audi studies whether combining hydrogen fuel cell technology with a hybrid drivetrain will lead to greater range and efficiency over a standard hydrogen-power car (which develops electricity for a vehicle to run).

Two high-pressure cylinders are featured on the Q5 HFC. The hydrogen in these cylinders is stored at a pressure rate of 700 bar (10,153 psi). The fuel cell is composed of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and produces 98 kW (133 PS / 131 bhp).

Audi has reportedly presented to its U.S. dealers the three new cars that will be appearing at the Geneva Motor Show, according to sources. These are a new Q3 SUV in bright orange, a Q5 Hybrid, and an A3 sedan concept that’s a preview of the next-generation A3 model. Fans are most excited about the A3 sedan, a model meant for the U.S. market where small sedan body styles are preferred over hatchbacks.

The source added that the next A3 will be available in 5 different body styles, including a 2-door cabriolet, a 3-door coupe/hatch, a 4-door sedan and as the Q3 crossover with an Avant version also being considered. The 3-door coupe/hatch is expected to be similar to the A5 coupe in styling.

The design of this A3 model will have more similarities to a scaled-down A4 than to the VW Golf appearance. In addition, this car will be longer, lower and wider than the existing version. More legroom is offered by the sedan variant than the current A4.
