Consumer Reports pulls recommendation for Camry, Prius V, and RAV4

Consumer Reports has withdrawn its recommendation on three of Toyota Motor Corp's vehicles, after they received poor crash test results. The magazine said it will no longer recommend the Toyota Camry, Prius V or RAV4 sport utility vehicle since they received "poor" ratings in a small overlap crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, remarked that after a year of the small overlap testing and over 50 vehicles tested – a number of which did adequately – the influential magazine is now making the shift and pulling recommendations from any car that gets a poor" rating. Fisher disclosed that virtually every family sedan has undergone the test and the Camry was the only one that received a 'poor' rating.

He remarked that “at this point,” Consumer Reports cannot continue to recommend people to buy a Camry when there are other vehicles that fared better on the test.

The IIHS, a non-profit group funded by the insurance industry, included in 2012 the small overlap test -- involving only a front corner of a vehicle -- in its barrage of crash tests. Consumer Reports waited to adjust its recommendations until it saw how the entire auto industry was affected by the small overlap test. It also does not recommend any vehicle that got poor scores in any of the crash tests.

Toyota Camry, Prius V slapped with poor safety rating by IIHS

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has conducted the newest frontal-crash test -- the small overlap test -- on a number of mid-sized cars. The IIHS’s small overlap test entails crashing the front corner of a car into a barrier at 40 mph. It was devised to simulate a collision with a stationary object like a tree or a utility pole.

Three out of 11 luxury cars earned "good" or "acceptable" ratings on the first round of tests this summer. For the latest small overlap test results, the IIHS gave a good rating to the four-door Honda Accord and the Suzuki Kizashi as well as an acceptable rating to 11 more mid-sized cars.

IIHS President Adrian Lund remarked that since new technology and new innovations go into the luxury cars first, these vehicles fared better in the tests. He added that the latest ratings were a bit of a surprise. However, three other models -- the Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu and Volkswagen Jetta sedan – received "marginal" ratings.

Toyota Prius V sales in 10 weeks surpassed GM’s Chevy Volt in 2011

In just 10 weeks, the deliveries that Toyota Motor Corp. made in the U.S. in 2011 for its Prius v wagon surpassed that of General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, which was offered all year. Toyota spokeswoman Carly Schaffner said that Toyota sold 8,399 units of its hybrid wagon, which only arrived at U.S. dealerships in the last week of October.

In 2011, GM delivered 7,671 rechargeable Volts. Meanwhile, it sold 7,997 in during the first 13 months on the market. Toyota had not differentiated Prius v sales from those of the original one.

In an e-mail statement, Jim Lentz, president of Toyota’s U.S. sales unit, said that Prius v is “off to a great start.” On its Web site, Toyota said that the hybrid wagon is priced from $26,400. The Volt has a starting price of $39,145 and it qualifies for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits. Toyota aims to deliver 220,000 vehicles that have the Prius badge this year to U.S. customers.

Besides the Prius C Concept, Toyota also unveiled today the Prius V, where ‘V’ expresses the vehicle’s versatility. As expected, the car offers over 50-percent more interior cargo space than the current Prius but also a low 0.29 coefficient of drag, which means it is bigger and still fuel-efficient.

The car offers the same powertrain as the current Toyota Prius, which means that we will find a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine delivering 98 hp @ 5,200 rpm, but also an electric motor in order to deliver a total output of 134 hp.

Although the Prius delivers a fuel economy of 50 mpg, the new Prius V will deliver estimated EPA fuel economy ratings of 42 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 40 mpg combined. Still, these are the best fuel economy ratings of any SUV, crossover, or wagon on the market.
