Toyota will end production of the RAV4 EV at the end of the year

It appears that the Toyota RAV4 EV was not quite a bestseller as the Japanese manufacturer decided to end production of its electric crossover. Back in August 2013, Toyota offered discounts for the RAV4 EV, while in September it used DirecTV ads strategy to promote it. Still, nothing seemed to help Toyota sell its $49,800 electric crossover.

The RAV4 EV was introduced at the 26th annual Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles, and was powered by an electric powertrain that delivered 154 hp (115 kW) @ 2,800 rpm. The RAV4 EV offers two driving modes, Sport and Normal.

In the Sport mode the SUV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 7.0 seconds, while top speed was limited at 100 mph or 160 km/h. In Normal mode, the RAV4 EV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 8.6 seconds and has a top speed of 85 mph or 136 km/h.

Toyota is using DirecTV ads strategy to promote RAV4 EV

Toyota is employing an experimental advertising strategy for its $50,000 all-electric RAV4 crossover. The Japanese carmaker is collaborating with DirecTV to reach potential customers who were identified as tech-savvy early adopters in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. DirectTV is using a new tool that gathers satellite-TV subscriber data to help marketers like Toyota reach more consumers, thereby improving the effectiveness of ads.

Dionne Colvin, Toyota's national media marketing manager, remarked that a mass campaign “doesn't make sense," but they want to “get the message out." This new technology -- known as dynamic advertising -- reflects a push by TV networks, cable and satellite carriers and providers of Web-based TV services in the US to help marketers like Toyota link more directly with audiences.

This new technology poses a threat to the traditional method of showing commercials over TV to reach a population, many of whom typically are not interested in the products.

Toyota is offering discounted lease on RAV4 EV

To boost sales for its slow-selling all-electric RAV4 compact crossover, Toyota is discounting the unit via low-cost lease and loan offers. Toyota is offering until Sept. 3, 2013 the option of a $299-a-month, three-year lease for the RAV$, or a 60-month, no-interest loan, according to the carmaker’s Web site.

The discount offers is only good in the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions, according to Toyota spokeswoman Carly Schaffner. Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and General Motors Co. are already offering discounted leases to boost sales of their electric offerings.

Toyota said in 2012 that it expects to sell 2,600 RAV4 EVs by the end of 2014, but the carmaker had only delivered 709 units from September last year to the end of July. Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst at auto researcher Edmunds.com, remarked that the mass market has been reluctant to buy electric vehicles due to the high cost of the technology.

Toyota Rav4 EV to go on sale in 2012, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk

The all-electric variation of the Toyota Rav4 will be put up for sale by 2012, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed. The baby SUV was first seen at the LA motor show in 2010. It is equipped with a Tesla electric powertrain. Musk trusts that it will be the "the best small electric car on the market" once it goes on sale.

The CEO further disclosed that the partnership between the two companies was progressing well, pointing out that Toyota is a "great supporter and advisor" for Tesla, especially when it comes to manufacturing.

Tesla obtained the former Toyota/GM NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, in 2010 in order to assemble its future range of electric models. However, the electric Rav4 will be built by Toyota in Canada in spite of the capacity at the Fremont plant. According to Musk, it was "Toyota’s choice."

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said that its top market is the US while the market in Japan ranks second. Tesla’s segment in Asia is expected to account for a third of its global sales by 2015. Musk said that the initial batch of electric SUVs it agreed to provide Toyota Motor Corp. will probably be made at the California plant Tesla acquired from Toyota and General Motors Co. Musk unveiled its outlook on the same day as dedicating the company’s Tokyo store, its first showroom in Asia.

It emphasizes his optimism in overseas demand as Tesla starts on an international expansion campaign. Tesla already has outlets in London, Paris and Monaco. As an act to strengthen the alliance between Tesla and Toyota, Musk presented a metallic red Roadster 2.5 to Toyota President Akio Toyoda in Tokyo.

This car came with a vanity plate that has the Toyota chief’s name and the number 5-20. This stands for the date that Toyota invested $50 million in Tesla.
