Toyota reveals 6 extreme vehicles at 2016 SEMA Show [Live Photos]

When Toyota first revealed that it will be showcasing a total of 30 vehicles for the 2016 Specialty Equipment Market Association, enthusiasts could hardly contain their excitement. However what is even more thrilling is that six of these have been modified to show just how extreme Toyota’s models can go.

According to the Japanese automaker, each of these six models either honors the brand’s heritage, looks at the current state, or projects what the future will be. There are also models that appear to be a combination of these three. Since the brand will be having what can be considered as the largest exhibit in the history of the SEMA Show, it is not surprising that Toyota went on this path. Below are the six models that Toyota took a chance on and gave a number of improvements.

The first is the Swagger Wagon, which is actually the Sienna in blue. Some would call this as the height of luxury when it comes to transportation, with the best description of the Swagger Wagon being that it is similar to a flying jet. While this minivan is now wider and lower, the brand put a number of enhancements composed of carbon fiber as well as those inspired by racing. However, the interior is what makes it stand out given its use of custom-leather, capacity for wi-fi connectivity, and the inclusion of a high-end theater system. With all these on the inside, customers are likely not to concern themselves with how the exterior actually looks.

Toyota launches high-performance Sienna R-Tuned minivan concept at 2015 SEMA Show

Have you ever heard of a high-performance minivan? Well, people really don’t expect carmakers to come up with a product like that. But it’s not at all unusual for Toyota. At the 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, Toyota turned that possibility into a reality by unveiling a high-performance Sienna show minivan, the Toyota Sienna R-Tuned concept.

This concept may change how people see the Sienna as an outstanding family hauler. They would begin to think that a vehicle like this could even go faster and look more menacing. To create the Toyota Sienna R-Tuned concept, Toyota Technical Center collaborated with performance shop DG-Spec.

Using a stock Sienna SE “Swagger Wagon,” they added a number of elements that would surely enhance the minivan’s performance -- double-adjustable shocks with racing springs, performance tires, wheels and brakes, and a clutch-type limited-slip differential.

2015 Toyota Sienna earns “acceptable” rating on small overlap test

Only one of the four minivans – all sold in the United States – that underwent the front overlap test of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety managed to get a passing score. While the latest model of the Toyota Sienna scored “acceptable,” the Dodge Grand Caravan (MY2008-2015), the Chrysler Town & Country, and the Nissan Quest (MY2011-2015) minivans got a “poor” score.

The 2015 Toyota Sienna joins the Honda Odyssey (good) -- which underwent the small overall test earlier -- as the only minivans to gain the IIHS "Top Safety Pick-Plus" rating used heavily in marketing new vehicles.

David Zuby, IIHS executive vice president and chief research officer, remarked while minivans are among parents -- a group that tends to be safety conscious – the institute so far seen two models offering decent protection in small overlap crashes.

There’s a lot to be said about the U.S. automotive sales of several models and brands for the month of November. The lead of the Minivan king, the Toyota Sienna, is shrinking. From the start of the year through November, 99,865 Siennas were sold. Meanwhile, the Dodge Caravan’s sales were lower by just 882 units.

At the end of October, Sienna had a 975-unit lead over the Caravan. As of the end of November, Honda had sold 95,579 Odysseys while 84,701 units of the Chrysler Town & Country were sold. Apparently, no car model could pose as a major threat to Camaro. From January to November, 81,495 Camaros were sold.

In comparison, 65,381 Ford Mustangs and 36,250 Dodge Challengers were sold. It’s likely that Camaro had stayed superior in its turf as it added a convertible this year. It’s difficult to gauge Saab’s future but even so, it was still able to sell 356 vehicles in November 2011. This is not a huge drop at all from sales of 397 vehicles in November 2010.

As a consequence of the new U.S.-Korean free trade agreement, Toyota Motor Corp. will be exporting Sienna minivans built at its factory in Princeton, Ind., to distributors in South Korea. The company said that shipments will start in early November. It’s estimated that about 600 vehicles will be shipped each year.

Yoshimi Inaba, COO of Toyota Motor North America Inc., said that Toyota's North American operations continue to work to recognize and expand opportunities for the vehicles that are built there. This is the first time for the Sienna to be exported from North America.

Last September, Toyota was thinking about moving the assembly of the Camry mid-sized cars from Japan to the U.S. These Camrys are intended for South Korea. The automaker wants to cut costs due to a strengthening yen and because of a free trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea.

Toyota Motor Sales announced that it will recall 94,000 2011 model year Sienna models which were produced before early November 2010, in order to replace the stop lamp (brake light) switch bracket.

Apparently, due to the proximity of the stop lamp switch bracket to the parking brake pedal when the parking brake is fully applied, the stop lamp switch bracket could be deformed by the driver's foot during parking brake operation. As a result, this could cause the brake lights to remain on or the brakes could become partially engaged.

This could cause in brake drag with associated brake noise, brake vibration, and/or illumination of the brake warning light. In these conditions, the braking effectiveness could be reduced.

Have you ever thought that a minivan can be easily transformed into a limousine? Well if you didn’t, you should check out the Sienna Swagger Wagon Supreme, which was unveiled today at the 2010 SEMA Show. The car is the creation of B.A.D. Company and Toyota, and it is based on a 2011 Toyota Sienna SE V6 with interior attributes from a Sienna XLE.

According to B.A.D. Company, the car was stretched by nearly four feet (44 inches), and a new acrylic roof replacement approximately eight feet long was installed in order to create a warm and stylish environment.

A new airbag suspension system was installed in order to allow a ground clearance to range from 2.5 to 6.5 inches, as well as a new set of 20-inch chrome wheels designed by KMC and wrapped in Nitto 255/40R20 tires in the rear and 245/45R20 tires in the front.

It was styled at Toyota's Calty Design Research Center in Newport Beach, Calif., and developed at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.

After having been underutilized the past year due to the economic downturn, things are looking up for Toyota's Indiana plant, which produces the new Sienna and the Highlander model starting last October.

Due to the risk that the spare tire could fall onto the road, Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 870,000 Sienna minivans in the US and Canada starting from the 1998 to 2010 model years. Toyota said that corrosion could set in the cable of these minivans due to exposure for a long time to road salt. The worst case could result to the spare tire separating from the vehicle.

These recalls involve about 600,000 two-wheel-drive Sienna minivans sold or registered in the US and about 270,000 of the vehicles in Canada.

While Toyota looks for a remedy, minivan owners will get a letter informing them to bring their minivans to be inspected at a dealership. This latest recall brings up the total number of Toyota's recalled vehicles since late last year to over 9.3 million.

The Ultimate NASCAR Fan Sienna Rampvan revealed at the annual SEMA Show highlights the same widespread vehicle changes found on other Sienna Rampvans offering exceptional wheelchair access, along with a host of new properties perfect for the keen NASCAR fan.

Built by BraunAbility, the Sienna NASCAR Fan Rampvan is outfitted with detachable passenger seats with wheelchair tie-down points for up to three wheelchairs, a fully lowered floor, foldout ramp and an inventive "kneeling" rear suspension, all designed to provide unequalled access for wheelchair and scooter users. The floor has been effectively lowered by 11-inches, lowering the ramp angle and permitting the deployment onto curbs, making it easier to enter and exit the vehicle while increasing interior headroom.

The 30-inch-wide power ramp has three conveniently located control switches, emergency door-ramp release and anti-skid ramp coating. Extending the ramp requires only five seconds after the power sliding side door is fully open.
