Toyota will start to export US-built Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine in 2013

Toyota will start to export U.S.-built Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine in 2013. Toyota already holds the title of being the all-time top exporter. In 2012, its exports had a 45% increase over the previous year with over 124,000 U.S.-assembled vehicles shipped to 21 global markets. Shigeki Terashi, president and COO of Toyota Motor North America, Inc., said that the company is “proud” that Toyota’s U.S. manufacturing operations continue to expand as a major supplier of vehicles for worldwide markets.

He said that this success can be attributed to its team members’ “dedication and high-quality work.” He anticipates that Toyota’s U.S. manufacturing base will be strengthened further with the export of Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine.

As soon as production starts this April, Toyota estimates that it will be able to export about 5,000 Venza vehicles to Russia and Ukraine in the first year of sales. Toyota’s Georgetown, Ky. plant will assemble these vehicles.

For 2012, Toyota debuts a new three-model grade strategy for the Venza, which combines a sport-sedan design with crossover versatility. The Venza had previously been offered as a mono-spec model with many option packages. The 2012 Venza is available in LE, XLE and Limited grades. The investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has unearthed records showing that Toyota had recalled its Venza crossover model on December 16 in Canada over problems with the all-weather floor mats entrapping the accelerator pedal.

The detail that got the attention of the US government officials is the six-week delay made evident by the documents that show that on January 27, Toyota issued a similar recall in the US. Under the law, carmakers have to report recalls of any foreign recalls covering vehicles similar to those sold in the US.

Back then, when Toyota reported the Canadian Venza recall on December 16, US officials were told no US recall is necessary since the all-weather floor mats that caused the problem in Canada were not sold in the US. Six weeks later, Toyota reversed its decision and recalled US Venzas on January 27.
