FCA to demo a concept of its new Android-powered UConnect infotainment system at CES 2017

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is indeed placing more of its focus into in-car technology as evidenced by its decision not to unveil any new production vehicle or show car at the Detroit Auto Show as well as by its intention to demonstrate a concept version of its planned Google Android-based infotainment system at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Essentially, the UConnect connect vehicle system to be shown at the CES 2017 isn’t the final version yet. The demonstration aims to show the seamless integration of Google’s Android operating software and FCA’s UConnect infotainment system. This means that via the demo, FCA and Google want to show that the new UConnect still has the easy-to-use interface and functionality of the current system but now comes loaded with several elements that are only found in Android-powered devices.

As part of the hands-on concept demo at the CES 2017 (scheduled from January 5 to 8, 2017), FCA and Google will showcase a Chrysler 300 unit. Its current 8.4-inch UConnect software has been replaced with a prototype UConnect system that is based on Google’s Android 7.0 (Android Nougat) operating system.

FCA presents improved Uconnect systems for 2016

The year 2016 will bring in FCA’s array of Uconnect systems that display highly advanced features like a faster start-up performance, more responsive touchscreens, processing power improvements, high resolution touchscreen display and brightness, better touchscreen controls, and the Uconnect 8.4 NAV system.

Meanwhile, some select models will also include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Apple CarPlay: Through this system, iPhone users can use their devices smartly and safely inside a car. Apple CarPlay allows seamless integration of an iPhone with the vehicle’s in-built controls and display along with Siri voice control. The app permits drivers to access music, make phone calls, send and get messages, receive messages according to traffic conditions, and many more features that can be used while driving.

Uconnect offers a year free of Sirium XM Radio for Chrysler vehicles

Drivers and passengers of Chrysler Group’s 2014 vehicles featuring Uconnect infotainment systems equipped with satellite radio could now listen to more than 150 Sirius XM Radio stations for free for a year. According to Sirius XM, the expanded trial features its "most complete programming lineup," which includes every NFL game as well as NASCAR race.

Once the trial ends, a vehicle owner could renew the All Access package for $199 annually. The expanded trial also provides access to Sirius XM Internet Radio, allowing them to listen on Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android and other connected devices, Sirius said. The Internet feature can be accessed atsiriusxm.com.

The package included contents like Howard Stern, Oprah Radio and live play-by-play of every Major League Baseball game. Alan Amici, head of Uconnect, said in a statement that the package is “a great opportunity” for their customers to listen to SiriusXM content delivered via satellite to their vehicle as well as get access to SiriusXM Internet Radio on their smartphones and other connected devices.

Chrysler to debut Uconnect Access service in the 2013 RAM 1500 and SRT Viper

The new “Uconnect Access” service from Chrysler will debut in the 2013 RAM 1500 pickup truck and 2013 SRT Viper supercar. A free service trial will be offered to those who buy any of the two vehicles. The length of the trials will vary from six months to a full year depending on vehicle configuration. During the trial period, the drivers can experiment with Chrysler’s new system, which functions like GM’s OnStar service in several ways.

Buttons positioned under the rear-view mirror permit access. However, the system can’t work as concierge just like it does in General Motors’ cars. Rather, Uconnect Access makes use of a cloud-based technology to provide what Chrysler claims to be more natural voice-to-text service, better voice navigation commands and generally easier access to its features.

The incoming text messages can be read aloud by the system. WiFi is available to occupants on demand with daily, weekly and monthly rates. But then, these rates aren’t exactly cheap. One day of internet is priced at $15 while using it for one week costs $30. A subscription costs $50 each month. All subscriptions will be coursed through Chrysler’s partnership with wireless provider Sprint.
