South Korean carmaker Kia is proud to announce that for the first quarter of the year, it posted record sales in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In the UK, Kia managed to beat its previous sales record for a month, the previous first quarter sales record and the retail market share record. For the first quarter of 2010, Kia sold 20,673 units, nearly the same number as it sold in the entire 2003. In a release, Yaser Shabsogh, Sales Director at Kia Motors, said that the market has "recovered from the dark depths of economic gloom at this time last year."

Shabsogh said that while scrappage has helped new car volumes since May 2009, the general retail marketing is "currently very strong." Even without the incentive schemes, dealers continue to report plenty of showroom visits and that orders are increasing. He added that its Quarter 1 non-scrappage sales were up by 22 percent when compared to last year.

The Hyundai Motor Group – a multinational conglomerate that includes South Korean carmakers Hyundai and Kia -- will have a new head of design. Luc Donckerwolke is the new Chief Design Officer of the entire Hyundai Motor Group, replacing erstwhile design head Peter Schreyer. Donckerwolke commenced his new role in the company on Nov. 1, 2018.

Prior to his promotion, Donckerwolke used to be the Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motor’s design center. In this role, Donckerwolke was practically working with Schreyer in influencing the design of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles. Now, his appointment means that he is taking over Schreyer’s work as chief of design operations at Hyundai Motor Group. He is now the primary overseer of the group’s global design team, which means that he will be the man behind the overall design direction of the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands from now on.

The appointment of Donckerwolke as the new chief design officer at the Hyundai Motor Group comes as Chung Euisun - company chairman and chief executive Chung Mong-koo – was promoted to a higher role in the company in September. The younger Chung is now the executive vice chairman of the Hyundai Motor Group, a position that allows him to oversee the entire conglomerate. He is also the heir apparent to the position currently held by his father, which means the younger Chung is now being groomed to become next chairman and CEO of the Hyundai Motor Group.

South Korean carmaker Kia has a new version of its Kia Ceed. It performs just like a standard Kia Ceed but it does look similar to the high-performance Kia Ceed GT. Kia is introducing third generation of the Kia ProCeed. While the next-gen model retained its nameplate, it has changed from a three-door coupe to a shooting brake. To be available in the market in the first quarter of 2019, the new Kia ProCeed offers imposing proportions, a compact footprint and good level of versatility.

The decision to transform the ProCeed from a three-door coupe into a shooting brake was fairly easy for Kia. As explained by Gregory Guillaume, Kia’s European Head of Design, the market for three-door hatchbacks in Europe has been shrinking.

However, Kia was adamant to kill the nameplate just because of low demand. Instead, they created a shooting brake body for the ProCeed, making it more versatile while having no direct rival. While Mercedes-Benz has the CLA Shooting Brake, this offering belongs to the premium segment, while the Kia ProCeed is for the volume market.

A new hot hatch is ready to carry the high-performance will of South Korean carmaker Kia Motors. Designed, developed, engineered, and built in Europe, the new 2019 Kia Ceed could be considered as a more practical and more versatile version of the Hyundai Veloster Turbo, having the same engine and same power underneath their hoods.

Kia engineered and developed the new Ceed GT exclusively for European drivers and roads. It underwent six months of additional testing to ensure that the hot hatch is more agile and more engaging to drive.

The new Kia Ceed GT sits 5 mm lower than the standard Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon, allowing it to have a lower center of gravity. To offer a more assured ride without compromising drive comfort, the front and rear springs were made stiffer while the responses to steering inputs have been improved. The new Ceed GT also features softer front and rear anti-roll bars.

As Peter Schreyer, a former BMW executive, is now with Kia, it now appears that the Korean automaker is in a familiar path when it comes to styling and performance. Since the beginning, the Kia Stinger GT had always been a hit, and rumours of a performance sub-brand, similar to Hyundai’s N line, are on the table. Speaking of styling, Kia’s current look will remain, especially their signature “Tiger Nose” grille, says Schreyer.

As has been confirmed, the Tiger Nose grille will not be changed any time soon. If you haven’t noticed, this design element can be found in most Kia models, from the new K900 to the Stinger, and even the entry level Rio. Schreyer is adamant that this design is what will make Kia models identifiable, similar to BMW’s kidney grille that sets it apart from the others.

Schreyer shared how the tiger nose grille should serve Kia similar to how effective the kidney grilles were for the BMW brand. The design element is not just appealing as Schreyer says that it is also flexible. He then added that he could not say the same about BMW’s styling element.
