Mercedes-Benz Unimog offers versatility and reliability for winter season

The Unimog, a multi-purpose four-wheel-drive medium truck from Mercedes-Benz, is certainly the vehicle needed by those who have to perform a number of challenging tasks across the United Kingdom. The Unimog can be driven both on- and off-road, on rail as well as on snow. The Unimog is designed and produced to exhibit reliability and versatility more than any other all-wheel drive truck.

It is even capable of reaching a top speed of 56 mph and it uses up to 40-percent less fuel than a tractor. Thanks to its gross vehicle weight of 11.99-tonnes and its 286-hp engine, the Unimog makes the delivery of large bulky items such as a Christmas tree measuring up to 17-meters and  weighing up to 3.5 tons a piece of cake.

The Unimog is also an ideal dual mode vehicle, as it can be transformed from being an all-terrain truck to a powered rail vehicle. Yes, the Unimog features attachable and detachable components and a rail guidance system based on two rail axles that are hydraulically lowered on to the tracks.

Mercedes-Benz Unimog 5000 carries tourists to the lava field of the Torre del Filosofo

The Unimog 5000 is capable of achieving even the most challenging of tasks. From May to October, it is used to carry tourists from the Etna cable car station at 2500 metres up to the Torre del Filosofo. The hiking trail starts at 2935 metres above sea level for tourists who aim to be the nearest they could be to the lava fields.

Over 300,000 tourists are attracted every year to Sicily by the possibility of going up Mount Etna. The Unimog range, which was in production since 2002 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth, is the best candidate to be used in the difficult conditions on Etna.

Its off-road prowess is applauded as it is the only vehicle concept of its kind. It features a flexible ladder frame, all-wheel drive with differential locks in both axles. These are portal axles and the central tire inflation system Tirecontrol, with each single technical detail playing its part in making sure that the "Universal-Motor-Gerät" or "Universal Motor Device.”

Unimog U 500 with 4-wheel steering is the perfect tool for the snow in Austrian Vorarlberg area

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog proved to be very useful at the aftermath of the tropical cyclone "Andrea" that hit the Austrian Vorarlberg region. The "Universal-Motor-Gerät" or "Universal Motor Device" (commonly known as the Unimog) is used all year round in clearing snow, cleaning the road and crash barrier, and grass verge mowing. However, it was seen to be surprisingly very effective in clearing over 10 meters of fresh snow on the Arlberg pass, the vital link between Austria's most westerly region and Innsbruck.

The Unimog fleet operates out of the Felsenau depot near Feldkirch/Frastanz, which is tasked to conduct road maintenance services on about two-thirds of the roads in the Vorarlberg region. The conditions were just as bad in the Montafon region, over towards the Silvretta high Alpine road, in the Great Walser Valley and on the Flexen route towards Zürs and Lech.

The 210 kW (286 hp) Unimog U 500 fitted with a Schmidt 105 front-end snow cutter was chosen for the task of clearing snow with a width of 2.60 metres. Helmut Feuerstein, technical director of the Felsenau depot, said that the Unimog cleared the excessive volume of snow from the roads.
