The Audi R8 isn't your ordinary car. Bred with motorsport DNA, the R8 is a supercar that promises to fulfill the performance cravings of many. Now, Audi is introducing the most capable and most focused Audi R8 model to date – the Audi Sport Performance Parts R8.
This special edition is essentially an Audi R8 V10 plus Coupe draped with the full Audi Sport Performance Parts package. Through the new Audi Sport Performance Parts R8, the German premium carmaker wants to prove that performance isn’t just a function of power, but is also achieved through aerodynamic enhancements and lower weight.
As for power, the new Audi Sport Performance Parts R8 features the same engine as the Audi R8 V10 plus Coupe – a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 engine that delivers 610 PS (602 hp) of max output and 413 lb.-ft. of peak torque available at 6,500 rpm. For many years, Lamborghini has always relied on the use of large and powerful engines including the V10 and the V12. In fact, the company’s very first engine in the 350 GTV was a V12, which is probably also why they are not ready to give these up. Just last week, the automaker confirmed that they will be sticking with their original engines.
Maurizio Reggiani, development boss of Lamborghini, further explained to Autocar that the naturally aspirated V10 and V12 engines on models like the Huracan and Aventador will remain for quite some time, and they mean for as long as possible. So don’t expect to see these models to have newer and smaller engines anytime soon, or as long as Reggiani is the development boss. He then says that it provides “a sense of emotion in a super-sports car”.
Reggiani once said that a Lamborghini’s DNA is made up of design, emotion and performance – elements that define a new car. The company then puts these elements in a scientific way by making them physical things so that the new cars can be compared to an old one, or perhaps, its competitors. The second-gen Audi R8 V10 Spyder first made its debut at last year's New York Auto Show, where it was offered with a 540hp V10, not the 610hp version found in the R8 V10 Plus coupe. Now, what better way to experience summer driving season than enjoying it with the newly revealed fastest series production convertible ever coming from Audi, the R8 Spyder V10 Plus.
Akin to its fixed metal roof predecessor, the soft-top Spyder Plus is armed with Ingolstadt's most potent series-production engine, a naturally aspirated 5.2 L V10 that produces 610hp (449 kW) and 413 lb-ft (560 Newton-meters) of torque. Made possible due to a boost in power compared to the non-Plus model, the German marque's range topping convertible can zoom from 0-62 mph (0-100 kph), needing only 3.3 seconds, thus it is three tenths of a second faster compared to the non-Plus model. The Spyder R8 Convertible's top speed increased by 6 mph (10 kph) to a superb 204 mph (328 kph).
The upgraded performance not only was made possible by its improved engine, but also due to decreased weight as Audi decided to cut back 55 lbs (25 kg) off the convertible compared to its "lesser" model, producing a dry weight of around 3,498 lbs (1,587 kg). Built at Audi's Bollinger Hofe factory, the super cars are largely handmade so customization choices are likely limitless. If you are living in the United States and you’re raring to own a 2017 Audi R8 V10 Spyder, then you should prepare at least $176,350 ($175,100 in retail price plus tax, title, and registration) to have a piece of this splendid roadster from the German premium carmaker.
At this pricing, the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Spyder would be between $20,000 and $30,000 more expensive than a comparable rival -- the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT -- in terms of power. It is also around $10,000 more expensive than the base version of the 2017 Audi R8 V10 coupe. Compared to the previous model, the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder -- at 4,426 mm (14.5 feet) in length and 1,940 mm (6.4 feet) in width -- is around 14 mm (0.6 in) shorter and around 36 mm (1.4 inches) wider than its predecessor. Its height and wheelbase, however, are still the same at 1,244 mm (4.1 feet) and 2,650 mm (8.7 feet), respectively.
The front end of the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Spyder is distinguished by a large yet low-height Audi Singleframe. Its honeycomb radiator grille is connected to the wedge-shaped headlights through sculptural surfaces. According to him, the next-generation BMW M5 and M6 could ditch the twin-turbo V8 and return to an all-new V10 engine. That could be impressive, as we loved the sound of the old V10 found on the previous M5/M6 models, although we are not bothered by the sound of the current V8 engine.
Still, there is nothing confirmed yet, just some rumors, but we all know that there is no fire without smoke. In addition, BMW is considering a G31 M5 Touring as Audi RS6 Avant is getting more popular in Continental Europe.
