Volvo debuts XC40 Inscription and V60 at 2018 New York Auto Show

For the 2018 New York Auto Show, Volvo is expected to introduce a new model for us. In fact, they are introducing two models, namely the range topping Inscription trim of the 2019 XC40 and the 2019 V60.

Of course, to makes the XC40 Inscription stand out, it has been given features that can’t be found in other cars. The company’s image has elements like leather upholstery with nicely bolstered seats upfront. The panels and pillars then got some black trim, contrasted by gray wood trim, while the infotainment system is then covered in metal. It sits on a set of wheels with five sets of dual spokes. The Swedish automaker also says that the Inscription has a long list of standard equipment that is uncommon in the compact premium SUV market.

Though Volvo does not specify, the XC40 Inscription will likely use a 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that produces 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and 258 pound feet (350 Newton metres) of torque. This is coupled to an eight speed automatic that sends power to the all wheel drive system. This is the same mill that was installed in the XC40 in the United States when it was first launched.

Elegant practicality defines newly unveiled 2019 Volvo V60 midsize premium wagon

Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars has taken the wraps off its latest creation – a new midsize premium wagon (estate) dubbed as the new 2019 Volvo V60. Volvo intended the V60 to be a family all-rounder, underscoring its position as a carmaker with the tradition of producing good-looking yet practical cars.

To strongly deliver the message that the new V60 is a family all-rounder, Volvo went for an unconventional yet persuasive manner of introduction. Instead of unveiling the new V60 at a motor show or at an auto-related event, the carmaker revealed the new premium wagon at the driveway of an up-market villa in the suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden. It was driven into the driveway – where it really belongs -- by Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo’s senior vice president for the Europe, Middle East, Asia region. This way, Volvo was able to send a clear message that the new V60 is designed to cater to the needs and wants of modern family.

As introduced, the new V60 is underpinned by Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that also underpins the new XC60 and four top-of-the-line 90 Series cars. So far, the V60 is the smallest and lightest vehicle to be underpinned by this platform.

Volvo confirms production of Cross Country version alongside standard V60

Volvo had just unveiled its all new family friendly wagon, the V60 in Sweden. It looks good, and it comes with a range of plug-in hybrid powertrains to choose from. Though the standard model may already be more than enough for some people, we’re in for bigger and better things as Volvo has announced that there will be a Cross Country version of it.

Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo boss, had an interview with Roadshow at the V60 debut, and he said that the wagon will be getting a more capable and functional Cross Country version. We do not know when to expect the higher riding, body cladded V60 to be released, but it shouldn’t be too far away from the standard model’s unveiling.

After confirming that a V60 will soon arrive, Kerssemakers made sure to give the nameplate’s significance within the brand. In other words, the model will not be produced in huge volumes. He also said that it is part of their heritage that needs to be continued. In fact, the automaker has already been offering a Cross Country version of the S60 sedan, which already needs an overhaul, as well as the V90.

Although the idea of a powerful plug-in hybrid car is something new, that didn’t stop Polestar to take a closer look at the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid. For those who don’t know, this model uses a 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine that generates 215 hp and 440 Nm of torque, as well as an electric motor with 68 hp and 200 Nm.

Thanks to a new optimization, the diesel engine was received an extra 15 hp and 30 Nm of torque, which means that the total output delivered by the hybrid system is now 298 hp and 670 Nm of torque. With these numbers, the V60 D6 Plug-In Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.0 seconds.

Despite the power increase, fuel consumptions remains the same: 1.8 l/100 km, which translates into 48 g/km CO2 emissions. What’s more interesting is that Polestar Performance is installed by a Volvo dealer with retained Volvo warranty.

The 2015 Volvo V60 will finally go on sale in the U.S. in January 2014. The Volvo V60 wagon was launched in Europe over three years ago so fans have been waiting for it for quite some time now. It is powered by the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine – the first Volvo ever to feature this engine. This engine is included in a new family of all-aluminum, direct-injected gasoline and diesel engines that have 2.0 liters in displacement.

Volvo anticipates that this engine range will serve as the backbone of a simplified powertrain strategy used for future products. At the start, only the gasoline engine will be available in the U.S. This engine will be offered in four tuned versions. The variant with the most power will be equipped with both a supercharger (for low-rpm response) and a turbocharger (for power at high rpm) to produce 302hp and 295 pound-feet of torque.

It will appear in the S60 and XC60, most probably in the 2015 model year (sold from January to February). The base front-wheel-drive V60 will be powered by a less powerful version of the new 2.0-liter that features just a single turbocharger and delivers 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 240-hp 2.0-liter is available in base versions of the S60, S80, XC60 and XC70.

After over a year of pressuring Volvo Cars' executives in Sweden to reverse a decision not to offer the Volvo V60 in the United States, the carmaker's American sales unit finally got its wish. The Volvo V60 will come to the US starting January 2014. But Volvo Cars of North America won't stop at V60, and will also push for the smaller V40 five-door.

Tassos Panas, head of marketing and product development at Volvo Cars of North America, remarked that he will spend 2014 lobbying for the V40 too.  He remarked that the V40 "is a great small vehicle," and they would love to have it offered in the US. He added that although the V40 is not currently in their plan, it would not stop him from making it a reality.

Panas, however, has to deal with one significant problem -- the V40, which went on sale in Europe in 2012, is not approved in the US. The V40 replaced the V50 station wagon and S40 sedan in Volvo's lineup for Europe, targeting the BMW 1 series and the Audi A3.

Volvo is planning to increase the output of its V60 plug-in hybrid after receiving better-than-expected demand.  The carmaker plans to build 10,000 V60 plug-in hybrids by the end of 2014, up from a previous goal of 4,000 to 6,000 units. According to Volvo, the increasing demand for the V60 plug-in hybrid is partly due to the emissions-based tax breaks provided to the car, which emits only 48 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer.

A Volvo spokesperson remarked that the V60 plug-in hybrid has done well since the tax exemptions for plug-in hybrids “are so good," adding that demand for the car has far exceeded expectations. Volvo said that for the initial production run of 1,000 V60 plug-in hybrids, the biggest markets outside of Sweden was the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Volvo is selling the car only in Europe.

The V60 plug-in hybrid’s starting price of EUR63,995 ($82,500) in the Netherlands is further trimmed by zero new-car purchase tax and favorable company car tax. Starting 2014, vehicles emitting under 50g/km of CO2 will be exempted from annual road tax in the country. A spokeswoman for Volvo in the Netherlands remarked that company drivers pay no tax to use the V60 plug-in hybrid, compared with EUR6,000 to EUR10,000 for a standard car.

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is now more appealing, especially in the long run, thanks to the new Transport for London Congestion Charge Policy and Company Car Tax. London’s Congestion Charge scheme has a new Carbon Dioxide emission limit of 75g/km, effective July 1, 2013. Since the Volvo V60 D6 AWD has carbon dioxide emissions of just 48g/km, it will still benefit from the Ultra Low Emission Discount (ULED) for the Congestion Charge.

The vehicle will still benefit from being in the lowest Benefit-In-Kind (BIK) tax band, even as changes in the taxation of diesel hybrid cars were made.

Already confirmed by Transport for London, the current Greener Vehicle Discount and Electric Vehicle Discount will be replaced by the ULED. This will reduce the carbon dioxide eligibility of vehicles from 100g/km to 75g/km.

Volvo will soon be selling the V60 Plug-In Hybrid with a gasoline engine, according to Volvo's product manager Lex Kerssemakers. However, he declined to provide additional details. It can be recalled that the V60 Plug-In Hybrid is the first plug-in hybrid to be exclusively available with a 5-cylinder, 2.4-liter diesel engine that works with an electric motor.

With this setup, the vehicle will be able to accelerate from zero to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 6.1 seconds and have a fuel economy rating with an average of only 1.8 liters / 100 km (130.6 mpg US or 156.9 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of just 48 g/km.

When the car is in electric model, it can go as far as 31 miles (50 km). However, it actually has a total range of 621 miles (1,000 km). Volvo said that when compared with a regular V60, the plug-in hybrid model has 300 additional parts, with the 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery as the most important one.

Volvo has revamped the majority of the models in its lineup in what is said to be the “most extensive development” of current models in its history. The performance of the S60 saloon, V60 estate, XC60 SUV, V70 estate, XC70 4x4 estate and S80 saloon won’t be sacrificed as it gets a fresh family appearance, enhanced equipment levels, improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

However, these modifications won’t be just to the exterior. The S60 models get a new interior trim, which is believed to offer the updated car’s cabin the essence of a Swedish house, while adaptive cornering lights are now on hand. A new luxury "Executive" interior package is offered on the S80 saloon, giving it some bespoke trim options. The XC60, which is the top-selling model of the Volvo brand, doesn’t anymore have black trim of a "more urban look."

The torque vectoring comes as standard. The only models that won’t be changed are the newly presented V40 hatchback and the XC90 SUV, which is set to have a replacement in 2014. Last year, Volvo stopped production of the S40 saloon, V50 wagon, C30 hatch and C70 convertible. The appearance of the new models makes use of styling elements from the Volvo Concept You, a big saloon concept presented at the Frankfurt motor show in 2011.

The latest Euro NCAP results indicate that the new Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid got the highest ever score for a plug-in hybrid. Volvo Car Group believes that the safety level of an electrified car has to be the same as other Volvo cars. In the most recent tests, the hybrid was subjected to a frontal offset collision at 64 km/h (40 mph), proving that the V60 Plug-in Hybrid is as safe as the standard V60.

European rating institute Euro NCAP provides overall rating for every car model it tests. There are four sub-categories, with each having their separate tests. These are added to generate an overall grade. The precise details about the tests and the results can be viewed at euroncap.com.

There is a different approach that has to be taken for the safety of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid due to the integration of the battery pack and the batteries’ added weight. Volvo revised the structure and strengthened it further to allow a controlled deformation, contributing to the high safety level.

Volvo Car Corporation is increasing the production of its Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid as the carmaker gets ready for its customer deliveries in early 2013. From the initial output of 1,000 units for model year 2013, the carmaker is set to increase the production of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid from model year 2014.

Volvo has successfully integrated the production of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, considered as the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid, on the same production line as the regular powered V60, V70, XC70, S80 and XC90 models at its Torslanda plant in Gothenburg.

The production integration is considered a remarkable feat considering that the plug-in hybrid technology consists of two complete drive trains and a battery that offers a range of up to 32 miles on pure electric power.

Volvo Car Corp. will start selling V60 plug-in diesel hybrid in autumn at a tag price of EUR57,000, CEO Stephen Jacoby told Automotive News Europe. The company will initially produce 1,000 V60 units this year and plans to increase production next year to offer variants at a price closer to EUR50,000, which is the current price of the diesel V60.

"The V60 plug-in hybrid won't be just a technology showcase, but also our halo model in Europe," Jacoby said, adding that the car would be profitable from the first day of sales.

V60 plug-in diesel has an all-electric of 50 km and fuel economy of 1.9-liters per 100km. The V60 plug-in diesel offers low fuel consumption as it can tap into electricity stored in batteries.
