Last year was probably one of the busiest years for the European New Car Assessment Programme, with a total of around 70 cars tested. But amongst that huge pack of vehicles, one model managed to really stand out, and this was the second-generation Volvo XC60. After going through all those cars, the European NCAP made a decision that this is the safest car overall.
Ever since, Volvo has had a good reputation when it comes to car safety, and that is why we are not surprised that the new XC60 got the highest score during the tests. It scored 98% for the Adult Occupant category, and for Safety Assist, it got 95%, which still is pretty impressive as most cars do not ever get a score that high.
Malin Ekholm, Vice President of Volvo Cars Safety Center, promised that no one should ever get seriously injured or killed ever riding a Volvo car by the beginning of next decade. And based on the results we just saw, it seems like the automaker is right on track with fulfilling this promise.Read the entire article 2018 Volvo XC60 gets the Euro NCAP’s best ratings for 2017
The next generation Volvo XC60 will be soon on its way to dealerships and customers as the Swedish carmaker has already commenced production of the mid-sized sports utility vehicle at its Torslanda facility in Sweden. In fact, the very first customer-bound Volvo XC60 has already rolled off the production line. This particular XC60 is a petrol-powered T5 Inscription AWD model wrapped in Crystal White exterior finish.
Magnus Nilsson, vice president of the Torslanda facility, remarked that they spent several months to thoroughly prepare the assembly site for the new 2018 Volvo XC60, adding that they are now ready to commence deliveries to customers.
Underpinned by Volvo’s self-developed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the new Volvo XC60 builds on the success of the first-generation model. It is the fourth model underpinned by this platform, which also underpins the 90 series. With almost a million examples already sold globally in the nine years since its launch in 2008, the first-gen XC60 was considered as the No. 1 premium mid-sized SUV in Europe, in terms of sales. In fact, the XC60 accounts for around 30 percent of the carmaker’s global volume. The second-gen XC60 is going up against the likes of Audi Q5, BMW X3 and the Jaguar F-Pace.Read the entire article Volvo starts production of XC60 at its Torslanda assembly site in Sweden
Fans have been kept on their toes ever since the lengthy teaser campaign, more so when the very revealing image of the second-generation Volvo XC60 was leaked. Finally, the wait is over, as details for the premium crossover have been revealed.
For starters, the 2018 Volvo XC60 carried over the great qualities of the XC90’s design, creating a smaller package which some believe works pretty well on the new model. The interior cabin of the XC60 is as opulent as its predecessor and is installed with a four-zone climate control. It also supports both Android and Apple CarPlay integration. The improvements on the XC60 are quite a breath of fresh air considering the challenges it will face in its segment.
What’s pretty surprising about the XC60 is that it is fitted with the same T8 Twin Engine setup as that of the bigger SC90 that will carry out the performance that it deserves. An electric motor works in conjunction with the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter engine to produce a total output of 407 horsepower enough for the XC60 hybrid to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) in a matter of 5.3 seconds.Read the entire article 2018 Volvo XC60 comes with upgraded powertrain and new exterior design
By 2020, Volvo aims to bring a host of active and passive driver aids to prevent serious injuries or deaths in all its vehicles. Just a few days before the Geneva Motor Show kicks in, Volvo has got a few more teasers to whet our appetites for the new XC60 SUV. The 2018 Volvo XC60 would come out with not just one but three driver assistance features--- one of which could autonomously drive you out of danger.
Since two out of three systems are mere updates, Volvo’s City Safety suite has been added with the new steering support feature that instinctively works alongside the automatic braking system in case it isn’t sufficient enough to prevent sudden impact. In other words, this clever technology could steer itself to thwart any possible collision ahead of time.
The latest safety feature will work when you’re driving between 50-100kph and will then increase the odds of being able to detect possible road threats such as large animal, pedestrian crossing or if another vehicle is on the way. Rather than limiting itself to a semi-autonomous cruise control system, all three assistance technologies are using the new automated steering to help the driver maintain his or her safety on the road. This new steering assistance device helps the driver avoid a crash if brakes are not enough to do the job.Read the entire article Volvo teases new autonomous steering driver assist for 2018 XC60

Volvo Cars has commenced building the XC60 SUV at its sites in Chengdu, China, where it currently produces the S60L. The start of XC60 production means additional 500 manufacturing jobs at its site in Chengdu, China. The production of the XC60 in China marks a step toward supplying locally built cars in China and exporting vehicles abroad.
Volvo sold 98,309 XC60s in the first nine months of 2014 for a 20-percent jump over the same period in 2013, making it the brand’s best-selling model. Overall, Volvo sold 10-percent more vehicles in the nine-month period to 379,880 units globally.
Volvo chief executive Hakan Samuelsson remarked in a statement that the China-built XC60 will be instrumental in boosting the carmaker’s overall growth in the country, which it considers as it largest market.Read the entire article Volvo starts building XC60 in Chengdu, China
Volvo is planning to expand its lineup of Polestar models and according to the latest rumors the Swedish manufacturer is currently deciding if it will work on the V40 or the XC60. Volvo already offers the Polestar S60 sedan and V60 estate models but wants to improve sales of its high-performance offerings.
Previous reports said that Volvo was planning a V40 Polestar but according to company’s powertrain boss Derek Crabb this is not true. Why? Because each of the individual markets want a different model such as a V40, XC60 or S60.
Still, the company considers that it can’t do it commercially and needs to rationalize that. If the current Polestar models from Volvo are powered by a six-cylinder engines that develops 350 hp, the upcoming models will get a high-performance version of the four-cylinder Drive-E powerplant.Read the entire article Volvo XC60, V40 models next in line for Polestar versions
Independent refiner Heico Sportiv has developed a comprehensive and expressive bodykit for the all-new 2014 Volvo XC60. The Weiterstadt-based company made a six-digit euro investment in what is considered to be Volvo's most successful model to date, thereby cementing its reputation as the number one player in the Volvo enhancement market.
Heico Sportiv General Manager Holger Hedtke remarked that with this product offensive, they are reinforcing its claim as the "world’s leading and most coveted independent refiner for the Volvo mark.”
The already elegant and dynamic XC60 becomes more stylistic and proud thanks to the redesigned and first-ever complete Heico Sportiv front skirt, providing the 2014 Volvo XC60 with a compelling, athletic first impression. The front skirt’s chosen contours and beading add flexibility for individual color combos and accentuations.Read the entire article Heico Sportiv develops complete bodykit for 2014 Volvo XC60
Volvo has revamped the majority of the models in its lineup in what is said to be the “most extensive development” of current models in its history. The performance of the S60 saloon, V60 estate, XC60 SUV, V70 estate, XC70 4x4 estate and S80 saloon won’t be sacrificed as it gets a fresh family appearance, enhanced equipment levels, improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
However, these modifications won’t be just to the exterior. The S60 models get a new interior trim, which is believed to offer the updated car’s cabin the essence of a Swedish house, while adaptive cornering lights are now on hand. A new luxury "Executive" interior package is offered on the S80 saloon, giving it some bespoke trim options. The XC60, which is the top-selling model of the Volvo brand, doesn’t anymore have black trim of a "more urban look."
The torque vectoring comes as standard. The only models that won’t be changed are the newly presented V40 hatchback and the XC90 SUV, which is set to have a replacement in 2014. Last year, Volvo stopped production of the S40 saloon, V50 wagon, C30 hatch and C70 convertible. The appearance of the new models makes use of styling elements from the Volvo Concept You, a big saloon concept presented at the Frankfurt motor show in 2011.Read the entire article Volvo unveils 2014 S60, V60, XC60 SUV, V70, XC70 and S80

As Volvo has increased its production in Europe, its U.S. retailers will be getting an additional 5,000 to 6,000 XC60 mid-sized crossovers this year. This move was made in response to their complaints that Volvo sales were hampered by the limited supply of the XC60. According to John Maloney, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, more volume is expected this year. Even more will be offered in 2013 and beyond.
Volvo poured a substantial amount of investment into its factory in Ghent, Belgium in the fall. To boost production, Volvo also hired 200 more workers.
Maloney said that because of these investments, there would be 12,000 more vehicles annually to be coursed through different markets beginning this year.Read the entire article Volvo retailers in the U.S. will receive more XC60s due to European production increase
Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said that by 2017-2018, the technical tie-up between Volvo and its former owner Ford would already be totally dissolved and that the Swedish brand would be taking its operations exclusively in-house. Volvo is working on a new platform to be known as SPA (Scaleable Product Architecture). It can underpin 70 to 80% of all of Volvo’s future cars.
Furthermore, new powertrains are being developed under the VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture) program. At the Geneva Motor Show, Volvo will unveil one car, which is the replacement of the current Ford-based S40 saloon and V50 estate.
Jacoby said that this segment’s “sweet spot” is a hatchback. Hence, there won’t be a small estate anymore. There will only just be a new V40 which has a typical production rate of 90,000 units annually. The focus will be on four-cylinder engines that have a capacity of 2.0 litres (diesel and petrol), with various outputs that range from 150hp to more than 300hp.Read the entire article Volvo wants a new model model positioned below the current XC60
Volvo launched at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept, a gasoline plug-in hybrid crossover concept, which uses technology that will later be seen on vehicles meant for the markets in the U.S. and China. In hybrid mode, the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept can go 600 miles while on the electric motor, it could go as far as 35 miles. Volvo said that it has a combined fuel economy of more than 50 mpg.
The hybrid crossover is fitted with a 280hp turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 70hp electric motor. The concept has a T8 badge since the combined 350hp of the hybrid is equivalent to that of an eight-cylinder engine. The new four-cylinder gasoline powerplant is included in the new Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA) engine lineup. Volvo said that a gasoline hybrid will start selling in the U.S.
However, it hasn’t given a detailed timetable yet. Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volvo Car Corp., said through a statement that Volvo XC60 crossover uses the new gasoline hybrid powerplant but it’s still too early to say on which model this “solution” will be used on. The electric motor is located in the rear axle and it uses a lithium ion battery pack that is placed under the floor.Read the entire article 2012 Detroit Auto Show: Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is a silent SUV
Volvo unveiled today ahead of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show its brand new concept: this is the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept. As expected, the concept is an electric car, a highly economical hybrid and a powerful high-performance car all rolled into one. Just like the V60 Plug-In Hybrid, the new XC60 offers three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid or Power. In the Pure mode, the car is powered only by the electric motor, which offers a range of up to 35 miles (charge depleting range, U.S certification driving cycle) and 45 km according to the European certification driving cycle NEDC. The Hybrid mode means that the gasoline engine and electric motor cooperate to provide maximum driving pleasure but with minimum impact on the environment.
The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is able to deliver CO2 emissions of just 53 g/km (2.3 l/100 km) - which translates into fuel economy of over 100 mpg. Using the U.S certification standards, the combined fuel economy in continuous driving is 50 mpg. According to Volvo, the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept has a total operating range of up to 600 miles (960 km).
In the Power mode, the gasoline engine delivers its maximum output, 280 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.), but it is also combined with the electric motor with 70 hp and 200 Nm (148 lb.-ft.). In the Power mode, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds). The power is delivered to the wheels using a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission.Read the entire article 2012 Detroit Auto Show Preview: Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept
Volvo revealed a performance upgrade for the 2012 S60 R-Design and 2012 XC60 R-Design at the New York auto show. This is considered a new addition since traditionally, Volvo’s R-Design packages have only included modified looks and chassis tuning.
Powering these two R-Design models is Volvo’s T6 engine, a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which was upgraded to deliver 325hp and 354 pound-feet of torque. In all other configurations, the T6 is rated at 300hp and 325 pound-feet.
This serves as an upgrade engine in the S60 sedan and XC60 crossover and in other Volvo products as well. The R-Design may be intended to be sporty but the T6 in both the S60 R-Design and XC60 R-Design models feature only a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.Read the entire article 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design, 2012 XC60 R-Design get some power boost

According to common wisdom, crossovers are the new wagons; however, at Volvo the heritage is more apparent. The Volvo XC line wagon-style crossovers was tremendously successful in the United Sates, along with different wagon lines representing around 50% of Volvo's sales in previous years. Adding a smaller, but sportier, version to the company's lineup, was the 2010 XC60 that debuted last year at the Geneva Motor Show.
Pricing for the U.S. spec XC60 was revealed today to begin with $37,200. Volvo asserts that the latest XC60 is the safest model ever, and will come with a long list of the most current safety technologies available including the newest 'City Safety' auto braking system as standard.
This feature mainly aims at reducing damage caused by collisions at speeds less than 19 mph (30km/h). The new car will come with the turbocharged 3.0-liter T6 which generates 281 hp (209 kW) which is also found in the XC70. All models are equipped with an AWD system and the standard Instant Traction by Volvo. Other markets will receive a couple of 2.4-liter 5-cylinder diesels rated at 163hp (121kW) and 185hp (138kW).Read the entire article 2009 Volvo XC60 U.S. pricing announced

To give the Volvo XC60 a bolder appearance is the new R-Design option pack to be presented at the Frankfurt Motor show 2009. The Volvo XC60, which has a solid market share in the premium sport crossover segment, simply attracts attention wherever it goes but wait until you add these R-Design attributes.
