Ford kills rumors over potential merger or equity swap with Volkswagen

In June this year, rival carmakers Ford and Volkswagen inked a memorandum of agreement for a possible strategic alliance. Months after signing the MoU, automotive industry analysts are now floating the ideas of possible merger or an equity swap between the American and German companies. Nonetheless, Ford is quick enough to quash such ideas even before they get out of hand.

Under the signed MoU, Ford and VW are exploring a number of potential projects in several areas like the development of a range of commercial vehicles together. Likewise, a possible partnership would also work to better serve the evolving needs of customers. The parties have already made it clear back then that the potential alliance wouldn’t involve any equity arrangement.

However, The Detroit Bureau published an analysis that the potential alliance between Ford and VW might go beyond the commercial vehicle market, since doing so could be beneficial for both carmakers. For instance, Ford can benefit from VW’s robust presence not just in Europe, but also in Latin America and China. On the other hand, VW can take advantage of Ford’s strong fortified status in the United States, particular in the pickup and SUV segments.

Ford to introduce new models in China to catch GM, VW and Toyota

Ford Motor Co. will have to stretch itself into multiple price points (up and down) in order to catch up in the Chinese market. Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa, said that the company is “very focused” on developing the Ford brand and on establishing its models into various segments. Ford, which has to catch up to competitors like General Motors, Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Corp. in China, has recently presented the redesigned Focus into China's fiercely competitive C segment, the largest segment in China.

Hinrichs predicts that by 2015, the C segment will make up for 5 million units of China's 18.5 million market by 2015.

This segment is bigger than entire car markets in numerous countries. It is divided into subsegments influenced heavily by price, namely: C Low, C Medium and C High.

Ford wants to boost its image and pricing in Germany, will take on Vw

Ford Motor Co.’s image and pricing in Germany need a boost if it wants to command more respect and expect to raise sales there. According to Stefanie Weiland, a car buyer and former owner of a Ford vehicle, Ford has a “deplorable” reputation. She is looking for a new car at the VW dealership, saying that its cars are “unbreakable.”

Ford Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally wants to achieve in Germany what he was able to do in the United States, which is to sell more vehicles by playing up fuel economy and technology such as voice-activated stereos.

Ford admits that its retail prices fell behind the German carmaker by an average of 6.3 percent in the last eight months. J.D. Power & Associates said that when it comes to sales, Ford is ranked No. 5 and its vehicles make up 7.5 percent of the German market. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has a share of around 20.8 percent.

New car sales for General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen rose in October as total market volume increased by 27.1 percent, as compared to the prior year.

This extended a rebound from August as people hurried to buy cars before the policy incentives of Beijing expire at the end of 2010. However, other automakers like BYD and Toyota Motor saw a decline in their sales for various reasons.

Industry observers say that in November and December, monthly sales could top the 1-million mark, thanks to those year-end advertising campaigns by carmakers who want to exceed or achieve their yearly sales target.
