VW Amarok and Ford Ranger might share architecture by 2025

What do the Ford Ranger and the Volkswagen Amarok have in common? Aside from competing against each other as mid-size pickup trucks, the Ranger and the Amarok have nothing in common. That may be true for now, but in the near future, these pickup trucks or their next-generation successors might be sharing the same underpinnings, thanks to a recently announced commercial vehicle joint venture.

A statement made by Volkswagen Group Australia managing director Michael Bartsch to GoAuto sparked a speculation that the just announced commercial vehicle joint venture between VW and Ford might eventually encompass the next generation of the VW Amarok and Ford Ranger.

Bartsch has remarked that to remain competitive in Australia, VW has to lower the cost base of the Amarok. He noted that the Amarok is being built in Argentina and Germany, both of which are high-cost markets for a product competing in a highly competitive environment. Bartsch commented that Argentina is facing an unstable currency while Germany has proven to be a high-cost source, which its rival carmakers source their products from Thailand and Japan. Because of this and the lack of a favorable trade agreement with the European Union, VW has been at a competitive disadvantage in Australia.

More potent VW Amarok is meant to rival the Mercedes-Benz X Class

During the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles decided to tease European pickup truck enthusiasts with a more powerful version of the V6 Amarok that’s dressed in a striking Turmeric Yellow Metallic. This model is called the Aventura Exclusive Concept, and now has a direct road going rival in the shape of a new range topping version of the luxury workhorse.

Today, the strongest Amarok is packed with 221 horsepower (165 kilowatts) and 406 pound feet (550 Newton metres) of torque. All these come from the 3.0 liter TDI V6 engine. This version has a little more power at 255 horsepower (190 kilowatts) and 428 pound feet (580 Newton meters) of torque. This stands for as much as 34 horsepower improvement of 34 Hp and 22 pound feet (30 Nm) of torque.

That is not all though, because it will be equipped with an overboost function that will temporarily increase the current output of the vehicle by an extra 13 horsepower, totaling up to 268 hp (200 kw). Having said that, this engine is paired to a 4Motion all-wheel drive system through a standard eight speed automatic transmission. The maximum torque is rated at a low 1,400 rpm, whereas the full version is available from 3,250 rpm.

VW reveals Mad Max Korama costume for its new Amarok

After we caught a glimpse of the revamped Amarok, VW Australia once again wants to give its ute a sinister look inspired by the Mad Max movie franchise. The “Korama” as they call it is a special edition SUV made entirely to promote the new Amarok.

Decked in military camouflage, the concept vehicle was designed by the same guy behind the cars featured in the sci-fi fantasy film. Its Mad Max: Fury Road-inspired get-up is built to encourage Aussie customers to buy the new model.

The extraordinary Amarok concept seems to be wearing a complete battle gear with its new body. The folks at Volkswagen Australia made sure that it gets all the attention after the extreme facelift that lasted for only five weeks. They assigned professional drivers to man the vehicle and take it to different places, which eventually piqued the interests of the onlookers.

Back in September of 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revealed that the Germany-based Volkswagen Group was in violation of the Clean Air Act. While most automakers would typically slow down while resolving the issue, the brand said that it will continue to have a presence in the U.S. market. In fact, Volkswagen stated that it is planning to bring the Amarok pickup to the United States.

According to Car and Driver, it was Hinrich Woebcken, Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Group of America, who shared that the brand is looking into its B-segment pickup as a possible contender to other longstanding models in the likes of the Toyota Tacoma or even the Chevrolet Colorado.

While Woebcken did not reveal specific details as to how the company intends to move forward with this, he admitted that it is not a priority at the present. This is because the brand wants to put much of its attention to the SUV and crossover segments. Proof of this is the seven-seater Atlas which was designed with the North American market in mind.

MTM has partnered with the DIRKS group to release the Volkswagen Amarok V8 DESERT edition. The launch of this double-cab pick-up comes at the heels of the cruising-oriented STREET model and is powered by the TDi 4.2-litre V8 engine the delivers a maximum power of 410 hp (302 kW) and peak torque of 930 Nm with just around 2,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm. With these figures, it is clear that even the desert itself would tremble at the prospect of facing the V8 Passion DESERT.

Maximum speed, subject to the type of the tire, can go as high as 240 km/h with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in merely 6 seconds. With this performance, it was necessary to upgrade the brakes with the one on the front axle measuring 405mm x 36mm while the rear axle has 356 x 22mm. It carries the BBS 10 x 20” rims with the Cooper off-road tyres sized 305/50 ZR 20. This makes the V8 DESERT appear to be ready for anything, even the wilderness.

Meanwhile the Volkswagen Amarok will be introduced under three different equipment lines. The first is of course the Amarok which relies mainly on having pieces that are tough yet purely mechanical. One can expect therefore that operations like window lifts, mirror adjustment, and door locking mechanisms, are all manually done. For this particular line, the mirrors and door handles are unpainted.

Last year at the 2013 Worthersee festival VW unveiled the Amarok R-Style Concept, but this year the stylish pickup truck returned with a 5,000-watt sound system. As a result, the load bed of the VW Amarok Power Concept features one of the loudest portable sound systems ever built and the centerpiece of this DJ equipment is an Allen & Heath Xone:92 with Pioneer CDJ900NXS units as input devices.

In addition, there are two VOID Acoustics Impulse 3t speakers that were designed especially for this pickup and a Void Acoustics Stasys Xair subwoofer. Volkswagen used the Void Acoustics mycro 6-loudspeakers as monitors and integrated them into dedicated functional sound boxes, while the Void Acoustics loudspeakers are driven by amplifiers from MC2.

Under the hood, there is a 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine that develops 272 hp (200 kW) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque. The engine uses an eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers the power to the road via the 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Volkswagen is currently offering the Amarok pickup truck with a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine but what if it would get a bigger engine. Apparently, this already happen and MTM, the well-known tuning company specialized in vehicles built by the VW Group, is the first tuner to do it.

As a result, the VW Amarok received a more powerful 4.2-liter V8 TDI engine that generates 410 hp (306 kW) and an incredible 930 Nm of torque or 686 lb-ft. With the new V8 TDI engine the Amarok zooms from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6 seconds and has a top speed of 222 km/h or 138 mph. In order to offer these performances, the rear axle had to say goodbye to leaf springs.

Moreover, a Panhard rod combined with air springs now ensures rock solid axle guidance. In order to stop in time, the new Amarok received disc brakes on the rear axle as well. On the front, we find new MTM brakes (405 x 36 mm).

It appears that Volkswagen wants to take its commercial vehicles a step further as the German manufacturer unveiled the Amarok Canyon Concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. According to Vw, the new Canyon Concept was configured for the popular extreme sport of ‘freestyle kayaking’.

Volkswagen’s 2012 Model Year Amarok will be offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a class-first feature. The extra gears enable a wider gear ratio spread between the 1st and the 8th compared to a conventional auto transmission. This results to numerous benefits like raising efficiency and towing capacity. NVH levels are also reduced. Due to the greater spread, the TDI engine is increasingly more effective in each rev range. It is also more fuel-efficient and agile.

In addition, 8th gear was configured as a fuel-saving overdrive gear that runs at a lower engine speed. The first gear is configured for pulling away in off-road use or when towing.

In a statement, VW said that just like the manual version, the Amarok with automatic transmission and permanent 4-wheel drive is therefore highly capable in all-terrain use without requiring added reduction gearing. Its fuel efficiency is improved further with the use of the new gearbox, combined with BlueMotion Technology that consists of battery regeneration and low rolling resistance tires.

This summer, fourteen new Volkswagen Amarok pick-up trucks have been saving swimmers and surfers in Portugal in one of its first utilization as an emergency services vehicle. The all-wheel drive full-bodied Amarok has been selected by the Portuguese National Institute for Search and Rescue to be used by its fast response team in carrying vital life-saving equipment.

Each unit has been installed with an emergency lighting bar and racking for surf boards. It is also fitted with an exclusive exterior design inspired by the original Volkswagen SAR pick-up concept truck that previewed the Amarok at the 2008 IAA Hanover commercial car show.

National Sales Manager Al Hemmings of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles commented that this is a great example of the flexibility that the new truck provides to fleet customers as well as the emergency services sector.

Volkswagen doesn’t want anyone to doubt the power of its new Amarok pick-up and to prove it, the carmaker used the model to demolish a 67 m high steel chimney that weighs about 140 tons and stands at almost the same height as the Westminster Abbey. Typically, the chimney would be demolished using a 40 ton excavator.

Doing so will take months of planning from structural engineers and demolition experts EDS. The Volkswagen Amarok will be the first pick-up to attempt this task.

A series of tests was conducted to assess the power and traction given by the Amarok. VW made this structure by using a standard procedure for any 'pull-down' demolition of flame. This cut a 'shark's mouth' into the base of the chimney, reduced its structural integrity even when it guaranteed that it remained free standing.
