Volkswagen will stop Eos cabriolet production this year

Volkswagen will halt production of the Eos cabriolet in May or June 2015 as it sees a shift in customer preferences away from convertibles in general and retractable hardtops in particular. A VW spokesman confirmed a report of the matter in Automobilwoche, saying that the production lasted nine years and 230,000 units.

VW builds the Eos at its site in Setubal, Portugal, where it also produces the Scirocco coupe, Sharan large minivan and its sibling, the Seat Alhambra. The stop-production of the Eos will not affect work at the site. The spokesman noted that in June 2014, VW announced a EUR677-million investment into the Setubal site by 2018.

Sales of convertibles produced by volume carmakers dropped 20 percent in Europe to 65,737 in 2014, according to figures from JATO Dynamics. The Eos logged a 14-percent fall to 3,197 units. Even the Opel Cascada folding softtop model failed to perform as expected due to the dropping demand for convertibles.

Vw to discontinue the Eos and replace it with a larger soft-top

VW Eos will likely continue with a larger soft-top, which replaces the existing form, according to Volkswagen head of design Klaus Bischoff. He was present during the Los Angeles Auto Show launch of the VW Beetle Cabriolet, which is the latest addition to VW’s open-top line-up that also includes the Eos and Golf.

He said that the Eos will not be prolonged when it stops being offered in the market. He said that the market has lost sight of the retractable hardtops so this is far from his mind.

Bischoff confirmed that VW is planning to create a bigger, full-size four-seater convertible – one of the 100 design studies that his team is presently developing. He added that there’s room for a larger convertible in its lineup so it has every reason to do it.

2011 Vw Eos Facelift UK pricing announced

Volkswagen has confirmed that the facelifted version of Volkswagen's Eos coupe-cabriolet will have a starting price of £22,895. Launched at the latest Los Angeles Motor Show before it arrived at UK showrooms in January 2011, the revised model is the latest in a long line of recent VW models to receive a Golf-style makeover.

To adopt this style, the Eos was given a re-designed front-end including a new headlight design integrating LED daytime running lights, a new chrome-trimmed front grille and a lower, wider air intake at the bottom.

It also features new fog lights. The Golf’s inspiration is also obvious at the rear as its bumper was redesigned and its rear lights have been squared off. The revisions made on the interior are minimal. It received a new steering wheel and instrument panel.
