It may seem that Volkswagen this year has been working overtime for the preview of its upcoming electric models --- the ID Buzz and the ID Crozz but somewhere in between, the German automaker continues to make new versions of its current vehicle lineup.
Soon to launch is the eighth generation Volkswagen Golf which will come in sequence with the very exciting premiere of Volkswagen’s ID electric hatchback. Speaking with Drive earlier this week, Jurgen Stackman, VW board member and sales & marketing head, said that the premiere of the new Golf should be expected in early 2018 which will be succeeded by the unveiling of the ID hatch. Further, Stackman ensures that the upcoming Golf 8 will be an extremely strong one that it wouldn’t matter at all if it will launch almost at the same time as the ID as both could hold up their own.
The board member however went on by saying there will no longer be an all-electric Golf down the line. Rather, Volkswagen will only add some new plugin hybrid varieties, including both diesel and petrol. The ID hatch will likely fill that void which will be offered at nearly the same price as VW Golf’s diesel variant. Volkswagen today announces the official pricing of the e-Golf plus more details about the equipment for each trim available. The updated 2017 model year, which is set to go on sale today, will come with a base price of $31,315 including $820 destination charges. The trim levels are SE, Limited and SEL Premium. The higher-spec Limited Edition trim goes by the price of $33,795 while the SEL Premium sells for about $36,995. As before, purchasing a new Volkswagen e-Golf comes with up to $7,500 federal tax credit.
The new version now gets a boosted range of around 83 to 125m from the new 35.8kWh battery pack instead of the 24.2-kWh from the previous e-Golf. Additionally, the 7.2kW charger now comes as standard on the SE, which will only take less than 6 hours to recharge with the use of a 240V charging station. Otherwise, customers can also have the optionally available DC fast charging unit (on the SE variant) for an additional price of $995. Within one hour, the DC fast charger can replenish the EV's battery by up to 80%.
While the previous model can offer highly efficient fuel returns, with the new battery’s increased energy capacity and improved battery chemistry, the new e-Golf now also has better fuel economy. To compare, the 2017 VW e-Golf’s fuel returns are now 126 mpg for the city, 111 mpg for the highway and 119 mpg for the combined cycle. This week, Volkswagen will be introducing a whole family of 2018 VW Golfs at the 2017 New York Auto Show. The models range from the base Golf, Alltrack, SportWagen, e-Golf, Golf GTI and the Golf R. These updated models are set to release this summer.
It’s easy to spot a 2018 Golf range from its exterior updates. The new look comes with new automatic headlights, LED taillights, LED daytime running lights, and a chrome grille. The SE trim will be equipped with 16-inch wheels, whereas the SEL trim can be installed with optional 17-inch alloys. The standard safety features from their predecessor will be passed on to the new models including lane assist, park assist, and park distance control.
All models are equipped with a 1.8 liter TSI engine that yields 170 horsepower (126 kilowatts) and 199 pound feet (269 Newton-metres) of torque. In terms of efficiency, the new 2017 VW e-Golf could boast of being one of the most efficient EVs, as the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) just rated the electric compact car as having fuel economy figures of 126 MPGe city, 111 MPGe highway and 119 MPGe combined. Yes, compared to the 2016 version, the 2017 VW e-Golf has a lot more to offer, thanks to a more dynamic electric motor as well as to a more powerful battery pack.
The electric motor serving as the core of the 2017 VW e-Golf has been upgraded to deliver a max output of 134 horsepower and maximum torque of 214 pound-feet. As the Dieselgate saga continues to be told, the stripping down chapter remains unfinished. Just very recently, the man who stripped down his 2010 Volkswagen Golf had his hatchback driven by an editor at Jalopnik. We don’t know exactly what the stunt that the man -- named Joe Mayer of Cincinnati – and Jalopnik wants to pull off, but it seems they are eager to show that the affected Golf subject to a buyback is indeed operable.
Here is how it started. Some owners were bragging about stripping down their Golf vehicles before taking them to VW for the buyback program, taking advantage of the term “operable” as defined by the program. Before going to his buyback appointment with Volkswagen, Mayer decided to strip down his 2010 VW Golf, took pictures of it and then posted it on his Instagram account.
His post caught the attention of Jalopnik, which then ran his own Diesel-gate strip-down story. Seeing the post, VW had a representative call Mayer and tell him that his appointment had been postponed. The representative didn’t say whether the carmaker would pay or would turn down Mayer for his stripped-down Golf. However, VW’s actions indicate its clear unwillingness to buy back a stripped-down vehicle. Presenting a redesigned version of the Golf was not the only highlight in Volkswagen’s display during the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. The brand also brought out an improved version of the e-Golf electric car that not only delivers more power but offers a longer range and shows more equipment inside.
A big improvement is the lithium-ion battery pack that now has a power of 35.8 kWh, a large increase compared to the 24.2 kWh from the previous version. With this amount of power, the e-Golf now has total range of 124 miles compared to the previous model’s 83 miles. In addition, there is now an on-board charger of 7.2 kW and through a Level 2 charging station, it allows the e-Golf to have a full recharge in barely 6 hours.
It is not only the battery pack that was improved as the brand also made changes to the electric motor. In the current model, the motor offers an output of 115 hp and peak torque of 199 lb.-ft. However for the 2017 e-Golf, the upgraded electric motor now delivers 134 hp and maximum torque of 214 lb.-ft. As a result, maximum speed is now 93 mph, an increase of 6 mph. Volkswagen has recently disclosed what the redesigned Golf 7 looked like and even said that it had already revealed all possible versions. For car enthusiasts around the world though, they know it is not so as the Alltrack, GTD, Golf R, and even e-Golf, have yet to be shown. With this in mind, what is left to do while waiting for this German automaker to reveal them is to look at potential styles especially when it comes to the body.
A good model to start with is the Golf Cabriolet which was first presented by the brand in 2011. When it came out though, some reviews said that as it relates to the engineering aspect, it would have been better if VW delayed it for at least two years. This was because after it was unveiled, it appeared to become outdated at once.
To Volkswagen’s credit, they did what they could to address this and they came out with exciting versions during the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Shows. As far as the Volkswagen Golf is concerned, its iteration for the 2017 model year will be receiving a whole load of important updates that should enable it to further its status as the carmaker’s most successful model to date. Living up to the quality that the GTI has always been about since 1976, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR is no extraordinary. It has been prominent on the racetrack since its launch in July 2015. All production models for the 2016 season had already been snapped up as early as January.
Teams can field the 20 cars in up to 16 national and international TCR touring car championship events. For the international TCR events, the cars will be handed over to sports teams starting March 11 in Abera/Barcelona (E). For the national TCR championship, the cars will undergo test drives at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia (E) starting March 14.
The production-based concept car has already demonstrated great potential at TCR outings. Volkswagen's partner, Liqui Moly Team Engstler, fielded two cars in the 2015 TCR International Series. Volkswagen of America has the Golf GTE Sport concept on display at the 2015 Los Angeles International Auto Show. This will be the first time for Volkswagen’s concept car to be shown in North America. The main highlight of the Golf GTE Sport is that it combines the best features of vehicles that are suited for both the road and for motorsport.

Volkswagen will be presenting its extensively updated Golf Cabriolet four-seater soft-top at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA). The updates are easily recognizable; among which are the sportier front bumper, the striking side sills and sporty accents on the rear bumper.
Not only that, customers can now choose from more configuration options for their new cabriolet. VW added six new exterior colors, an additional soft-top color and six new wheel designs. The German carmaker also added a new generation of steering wheels and new trim elements.

The latest creation from Volkswagen arrived at the Worthersee Tour 2015 and it is the proof that the German manufacturer is catapulting the GT tradition into the future. Dubbed the VW Golf GTE Sport, the new concept is powered by a total of three motors, combined in a plug-in hybrid drive.
First of all, there is a 1.6-liter TSI (turbocharged direct-injection engine) adapted from the Polo R WRC (World Rally Car), producing 299 hp (220 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. In addition, the four-cylinder engine is assisted by two electric motors, one positioned at the front in the housing of the 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the second is located at the rear.
The first electric motor produces 115 hp (85 kW) and 330 Nm of torque, while the second one produces 115 hp (85 kW) and 270 Nm. The total output delivered by the plug-in hybrid system is 400 hp (295 kW) and 670 Nm (495 lb-ft) of torque.
