VW releases own spy video of Tiguan Allspace, Arteon and Up! GTI being tested in South Africa

We love spy pictures and videos. For fans and enthusiasts, or for journalists and rival carmakers, spy images and videos are coveted. Well, our inherent love for spy images and videos is basically fueled by the fact these graphics allow people to have a basic idea of the overall appearance of a new model. Moreover, these spy graphics helps confirm whether a carmaker is on its way to bring a new vehicle offering to the market.

Spy images and videos are usually taken from afar by enterprising photographers or so-called “carparazzi” while the vehicles or their prototypes are being tested on tracks or on the road. Thus, it was very surprising and highly unusual for Volkswagen to provide a spy video of some of its newest products. VW took some good shots of its new offerings like the Arteon coupe, Tiguan Allspace and Up! GTI being tested in the harsh environment of South Africa.

These vehicles were being tested for their endurance both on paved and rough roads on high temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius. Frank Welsch, Board Member for Development at Volskwagen, remarked that to push the engines of these new models to the limits, they were driven with the air-conditioning units turned on. This way, VW could make sure that air-conditioning units work even then. He added that these vehicles – especially the Tiguan Allspace – were being tested on dirt and paved roads to make sure that occupants always feel comfortable under any road condition.

Volkswagen has presented the new Cross Up -- a rugged version of the Up city car – which is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Volkswagen UK hasn’t made the decision yet on whether it will take the car. Currently, its chances are at 50/50. The Cross Up can be differentiated from usual five-door VW Up due to its black body cladding for the wheel arches and side sills.

A light metallic silver finish has also been applied to its bumpers and exterior mirror housings. The model is equipped with a set of 16-inch alloy wheels with a design that’s reminiscent of the other VW Cross models and covered in 185/50 section tires. For the interior of the front-drive Cross Up, VW put in special trim for the seats, special floor mats, a modified instrument panel and chrome surrounds for the air vents.

It is powered by a 74bhp three-cylinder engine coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox – a combination that had been used on the standard Up. VW doesn’t mention if the traction control system has been modified to have additional control in low-grip conditions.

Volkswagen has launched the eco up! -- the natural gas car that offers the highest fuel economy in the global market. Natural gas and biomethane have excellent potential for lowering the CO2 emissions level. There’s no doubt that the new eco up! is presently the most fuel-efficient natural gas passenger car in the world.

For every 100 km, the four-seat Volkswagen uses up only 2.9 kg of natural gas (CNG = Compressed Natural Gas) and emits 79 g/km of CO2. The fuel efficiency leads to very low fuel costs. In Germany, the eco up! that is offered either as a two-door or four-door claims a cost of slightly more than 3 euros for 100 km. But in Italy, it costs less than 3 euros. Italy has the biggest market for natural gas cars in Europe.

There is currently no other all-round car that could be driven so economically. But what makes natural gas cars such as the eco up! very advantageous is that they’re not limited to natural gas. Alternative fuels like renewable biomethane can also be used to power these cars. Biomethane is built from plant by-products and does not compete with food crops.

The new Volkswagen Up city car will be available with an optional five-speed automated manual gearbox. VW has started to take orders for this option, which is priced £595 higher than a standard five-speed manual Up. Fuel economy is improved while CO2 emissions are lower because of the Automatic Shift Gearbox (ASG).

The gearbox is offered on both the three-door and five-door Move Up and High Up models (with the exception of BlueMotion Technology cars). The ASG-equipped cars have a starting price of £9675. When the new transmission is fitted to the 59bhp 1.0-litre Move Up, the city car could help achieve 64.2mpg combined, while having CO2 emissions level at 103g/km.

In comparison, the five-speed manual version is capable of returning 62.8mpg and emitting just 105g/km of CO2. The 59bhp Move Up can accelerate from zero to 62mph in a range from 14.4sec to 15.3sec while the 74bhp High Up model can go sprint in a range from 13.2sec to 13.9sec.

The order books are now open for the new five-door Volkswagen up!, priced at only £365 higher than the equivalent three-door model. Volkswagen’s much-awarded city car features wide-opening rear doors and is priced from £8,360. The five-door up! is equipped with the same qualities as its three-door variant.

Its wheelbase measures 2.42 m long, resulting to a remarkable interior space even when it has a small and a vehicle length of 3.54 m, making it easier to park. It also has a large 251-litre boot, a frugal three-cylinder engine, infotainment system, and safety features that are new to the class.

The five-door up! benefits the rear passengers as it has exactly the same space offered in the three-door model, with a headroom of 947 mm of headroom (compared to 993 mm in the front). It also has 789 mm of legroom.

Volkswagen is converting its Up city vehicle into a range of entry-level cars to reach its goal of 10 million vehicle sales annually by 2018 and to grab a portion of the market from Fiat. The German vehicle manufacturer has been unsuccessful in finding the one real successor to the original Beetle, thus, it is testing several models to embark on the market for basic, affordable transportation.

Prior to the Up urban vehicle, attempts on the VW Fox and Lupo have failed. Volkswagen's Seat and Skoda brands are selling Up clones. Also, a cut-rate variant will be aimed for first-time purchasers in China, India and Brazil. Analyst Albrecht Denninghoff at Frankfurt-based Silvia Quandt Research commented that the Up is a "fundamental milestone" for VW to hit its sales goal.

The expanded range of this city vehicle will "really increase the pressure" on the rivals in the segment in which they generate their finance. Sales of the subcompact are increasing as governments urge carmakers to manufacture vehicles that consume less fuel and purchasers seek vehicles ideal for driving in urban centers. Minicar sales such as Fiat Panda and Up could increase 25% worldwide to 11.2 million units by 2015, IHS Automotive revealed.

Do you need a panel van that suits your city delivery needs? Volkswagen AG has just the right solution. Introducing the Cargo up! panel van, one of the four up! city cars that Volkswagen will soon roll out. The Cargo up! panel van may not have the same cargo capacity as the actual vans in the city road, but it could load 47 percent more than a standard car.

It may not be big enough to carry large amounts of cargo but it serves its purpose right for delivering other items within the city. Attractive and stylish, the Cargo up! panel van is also versatile and inexpensive.

The winner of the ‘iF product design award 2012,’ the Cargo up! offers more cargo room by having most of its interiors stripped. All that remains in the city car’s minimal interior footprint (3.54 x 1.64 m) is the driving console and the driver’s seat. As a result, the Cargo up! now could carry up to 1,400 litres of load, compared to the 951 litres of load of the standard model.

Several photos of the package prepared by German tuning company ABT for the Volkswagen Up! were released days before the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Typically, the conversions get a DIY bolt-on look that leaves majority of the car unaffected but ABT goes the entire way as all the panels were modified.

Hans Jurgen ABT said that the new Up! will be a pleasure to drive through the town streets and even more so on the narrow roads. It’s quite reminiscent of the small Abarths that the previous generation used to drive. The Up! was tuned with a combination of modern and retro styling.

ABT said that window frames and side skirts are the “common thread” that go directly to the prominent back of the ABT up!, where a unit is formed by rear masks, an exhaust pipe tunnel and the sporty double exhaust pipe.

Volkswagen is prepared to sign off on its new city car -- an 80mph, battery-powered version named the e-Up. In temperate conditions, it could be driven more than 90 miles and it may appear in UK showrooms within a year. Its development is nearly complete. Safety and crash tests are being conducted on the electric car production prototypes.

It even has to undergo a nail penetration test. Instead of the normal models’ three-cylinder petrol engine, the e-Up is equipped with an 80bhp electric motor directly geared to the front wheels.

It is capable of developing 148lb ft of torque from a standstill, which makes a performance below 50mph incredibly quick. It could accelerate from zero to 62mph in under 14sec and it offers an electronically limited top speed of 80mph. When recharging in the household, it takes about eight hours. However, an industry-standard fast-charging socket is also available.

Independent European consumer protection organization Euro NCAP awarded five stars to Volkswagen’s smallest car, the up!. It also gave the 2011 Advanced Award to the City Emergency Braking function of the up! This award began in 2010. The up! got the best rating of any vehicle in its class, guaranteeing that children and adults both get excellent protection during an accident.

It also gets comprehensive safety features that include the optional City Emergency Braking, which is instantly activated at speeds between 5 and 30 km/ h.

A laser sensor (incorporated in the upper area of the windscreen) is used to scan a space as long as 10 metres in front of the up! to detect the risk of a collision. The emergency braking function may lessen the severity of an accident through automatic brake intervention. This also helps prevent a collision.

It was obvious that Volkswagen is going to reveal the four-door version of the Up! after last week, the patent images with the car emerged on the web. As expected, the new car will be identical with the two-door version, which means it will receive the same 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine delivering 44 kW / 60 PS and 55 kW / 75 PS.

The design of the new car has also changed a little bit as the four-door version features a modified side profile, as the lower window line of the two-door rises towards the rear near the C-pillars and forms a straight line. The boot has a capacity of 251 liters, but this can be extended to 951 litres by folding down the rear backrest.

Still, the rear seats offer the same comfort as the headroom in the rear is 947 mm, while in the front is 993 mm. Volkswagen is offering the same optional features in the four-door version of the Up!, such as City Emergency Braking, a portable navigation and infotainment system with touchscreen, which contains a navigation system, a hands-free telephone unit, an informational display of various vehicle parameters and a media player.
