Volkswagen preparing a four-door version of the XL1

The Volkswagen XL1 is the most fuel-efficient vehicle ever produced by the German manufacturer but the car is not suitable for a family with two kids. Still, there is no need to worry as Volkswagen is reportedly working on a new version of the XL1 that can accommodate up to four adults. According to Autocar, Volkswagen’s Ferdinand Piech wants to see the manufacturer at the cutting edge of super-efficient vehicles.

VW is expected to use the same technology on the upcoming vehicle such as the powertrain but also front and rear subframes as well as suspension and braking systems. Volkswagen might use rear-hinged doors just like those found on the BMW i3 as well as a new carbon tub.

The current Volkswagen XL1 has a total weight of just 795 kg and with the addition of the two seats and doors, the weight is expected to increase by 130 kg. For those who don’t know, the XL1 is powered by a plug-in hybrid system that consists of a 0.8-liter two-cylinder TDI engine (35 kW/48 hp), an E-motor (20 kW / 27 hp) and a lithium-ion batter.

Volkswagen XL1 makes US debut at Chattanooga

The Volkswagen XL1 was unveiled for the first time in the United States at the 23rd Annual Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) Conference at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The XL1 boasts of an estimated European combined fuel consumption rating of 261 mpg (over 200 estimated US mpg) and an all-electric range of to 32 miles.

Oliver Schmidt, General Manager of the Engineering and Environmental Office (EEO), Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., remarked that the XL1 provides a “glimpse into Volkswagen’s present and future eco-mobility capabilities, and highlights the ultimate successes of ‘Thinking Blue’.”

Aside from the US debut of the XL1, Volkswagen’s participation in the SEJ Conference also entailed a tour of its LEED Platinum-certified assembly plant and solar park in Chattanooga.

Vw Chairman Ferdinand Piech shows the Ducati-powered XL1

A Ducati-powered XL1 was unveiled by Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech during a lecture at the University of Vienna. The model, which is dubbed the XL Sport, stands out due to an aggressive body kit that consists of a front splitter, a ventilated hood and extended fenders. It also has a set of unique alloy wheels and motorsport-inspired graphics.

Very few details have been released of the model. Piech said that it will be equipped by a Ducati-sourced 1200cc engine that delivers 190 HP (140 kW) and 123 Nm (91 lb-ft) of torque.

There’s no information yet about its performance but it’s reported that it is lighter than 795 kg (1752 lbs) due to its lightweight parts and the fact that it doesn’t have a plug-in hybrid system. There were speculations that a petrol-powered XL1 may soon enter production, but the XL Sport seems to be a concept or research vehicle.

Vw working on the XR1: an ultralight, mid-engined sports car using a Golf GTI engine

As you may know already, back in February Volkswagen introduced the XL1, known as the most fuel-efficient production car in the world. For those who don’t know, the XL1 uses a 0.8-liter two-cylinder TDI engine with 48 PS and an E-motor with 27 PS, enough to use only 0.9 liters of fuel for 100 km. Well, now the German manufacturer wants to take things even further and will create the XR1, or a sporty version of the XL1.

According to Car magazine, the Volkswagen XR1 will be a high-tech sports car and could use the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine found on the Golf GTI. Still, engineers are mulling over a turbo and supercharged triple or a hybrid. Sources suggest that Volkswagen could use the Golf GTI engine mid-mounted across the body.

Performances will be impressive: 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 911 Carrera PDK’s 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h or 190 mph. Volkswagen will create a new car and will not just add a new engine on the XL1.

In a recent interview with Autoblog Green, Volkswagen announced that its most fuel-efficient car, the XL1 will be available only as a lease. The German manufacturer plans to produce 50 cars and if there is demand it will build additional units. For those who don’t know, the Volkswagen XL1 is powered by a 800cc TDI engine delivering 48 hp (35 kW), but also carries an electric motor with 27 hp (20 kW).

The diesel engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG), while the energy developed by the electric motor is stored in the lithium-ion battery. According to the official data, the XL1 hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 12.7 seconds and has a top speed of 160 km/h or 100 mph.

Thanks to the hybrid system the XL1 has a fuel consumption of just 0.9 liters of fuel per 100 km and is able to cruise on the road at a constant speed of just 100 km/h using just 6.2 kW of 8.4 hp. In the all-electric mode, the XL1 needs less than 0.1 kW to cover a driving distance of 1 km.

This year, Volkswagen’s XL1 two-seater will have a limited production. At the same time, it will serve as a technology demonstrator and test bed for other the other models under the Volkswagen Group. Claimed to be the most frugal and most aerodynamically efficient production car ever built, the XL1 is powered by a two-cylinder diesel engine mated to an electric motor to have a fuel economy rating of 313mpg and a CO2 emissions level of 21g/km.

This engine helps to make a new powertrain for plug-in hybrid cars based on VW’s MQB architecture, which include the Golf and A3 hybrids.

Volkswagen has upgraded the design and layout of the XL1’s powertrain to feature a four-cylinder engine and a more powerful six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with an output of up to 300lb ft, and equipped with a 9kWh battery. The A3 hybrid that’s expected to arrive in 2014 is the first car to receive the powertrain.

Volkswagen Group is joining the fray for customers in the plug-in hybrid market with its Volkswagen XL1, which it touts as the most fuel-efficient production car in the world. It took Volkswagen Group much longer than its rivals to offer electrified vehicles. But now, the German carmaker is planning to roll out a series of plug-in hybrids that would be pitted against the Toyota Prius Plug-in hybrid, Chevrolet Volt and Ford C-Max Energi.

According to VW, the two-seat XL1 coupe is powered by a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain that returns 261 mpg by European standards. The United Stated EPA has not rated the XL1's fuel economy. Designed as a technological showpiece, the VW XL1 will be initially available in only 250 units and will only be initially sold in Germany and Austria.

Jonathan Browning, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America, told Automotive News that he will request a handful of XL1s for the US, "even if it's just on the basis of a test fleet."

The big surprise is that the Volkswagen XL1 needs only 0.9 liters of fuel per 100 km, a record figure that has not been achieved by any other vehicle to date. Volkswagen XL1 has the ability to cruise on the road at a constant speed of 100 km/h using just 6.2 kW / 8.4 PS.

In all-electric mode, the XL1 requires less than 0.1 kWh to cover a driving distance of over one kilometer. The XL1 is an automotive hero that follows pure sports car design principles: low weight (795 kg), perfect aerodynamics (Cd 0.189) and a low centre of gravity (1,153 mm high).

At the recent annual meeting of the Volkswagen Group board, Chairman Ferdinand Piech rolled up in the XL1, his latest one-liter car pet project. Actually, Piech did the same thing a decade ago but back then, he had done it with the L1 concept car. Piece had driven from Wolfsburg to the board meeting for almost 100 miles to Hamburg, Germany.

Ursula, Piech’s wife and supervisory board member, also attended the meeting together with David McAllister, the Minister President of the German state of Lower Saxony.

Powering the two XL1 cars is a plug-in hybrid system that features a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 48-hp, two-cylinder diesel engine mated to an electric motor, which delivers an extra 27 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque.

The production version of Volkswagen’s XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle (SEV) is under development, according to VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn. The concept form has been revealed at the Qatar Motor Show while the final version is expected to enter small series production by 2013. It’s believed that the unit will be built either in Dresden or Wolfsburg and it will be equipped with a hybrid powertrain that includes a 27hp electric motor and a 0.8-liter 48 hp two-cylinder diesel engine. The two have a combined output of 75hp.

This may seem underpowered but it has to be considered that the concept weighs just 795 kg (1,752 lbs) due to the use of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic, aluminum, ceramics and magnesium.

VW said that the XL1, which features a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, can go from zero to 62 mph in 11.9 seconds and it can reach a top speed of 100 mph (161 km/h). In addition, it offers a fuel efficiency rating of 0.9 liters per 100 km (261 US mpg or 313 UK mpg) and has a CO2 emissions rating of 24 grams per km.
