Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury brand, recently launched the 2018 Genesis G70 to go against German models like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. But while its rivals offer their models in wagon variants, Hyundai doesn’t have a G70 wagon variant. This is because some customers just prefer to have a little more space for their junk. To keep up with the competition, Genesis might need to have a long roof variant of its own. But how would it look? X-Tomi Design helps us imagine it.
The current G70’s design features a flowing roof that goes all the way to its sporty rear, including an integrated upward kink towards the edge of the trunk. X-Tomi Design’s rendering retains its original shape, but stretches it a little creating a longer line and some extra space in the rear. The rear end now gets a spoiler to keep its performance-oriented appearance.
At this moment, Genesis offers three options of the G70 at launch in South Korea, and they have not given any details regarding the US-spec model. The Korean version’s base trim has a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that carries out 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts), and with the Performance Package, 251 horsepower (187 kilowatts) and 260 pound-feet (353 Newton-metres) of torque. Another option is the 2.2 liter four-cylinder turbodiesel with 200 horsepower (149 kilowatts). And for the range topping trim, you’ll get a 3.3 liter turbocharged V6 that produces as much as 365 horsepower (272 kilowatts) and 376 pound-feet (510 Nm) of torque. Mercedes-Benz has published images of the new A-Class hatchback and sedan models, together with spy shots of the B-Class, CLA, GLA and the GLB. But one thing we have not seen yet is the CLA Shooting Brake. While we’ve heard rumours that the swoopy wagon won’t be renewed, we think that the opposite is true.
In January 2017, Autocar heard from Mercedes’ sales and marketing boss, Britta Seeger, that the wagon will be getting a second generation version. There has been no retraction so we take that as a signal that we will soon see a new generation of the CLA SB. Nevertheless, we regret to say that the larger model, the CLS Shooting Brake, has been terminated due to low demand.
It is true that a lot of people have a thing for wagons, but the number of people who are shifting to crossovers and SUVs are significantly more, and really, automakers will just have to head towards the direction where their business will flourish. During the 2018 New York Auto Show, not only did Genesis reveal to us the G70 manual equipped sports sedan, but alongside it, they also pulled the covers off of an electric concept car that they call the Essentia. All we can say is that it is very striking even beside various machines at the show - and that is an understatement.
This concept is pretty new for Genesis in many ways. For instance, its body, monocoque structure, and chassis are all made from carbon fiber. The Essentia is also considered to be Genesis’ very first full-on battery electric vehicle. And even if we still have not gotten details on the power just yet, it is said to have multiple electric motors that can send the Essentia to 60 miles per hour in an estimated three seconds. Of course, this is a concept vehicle so most of the information we are getting are not final or confirmed.
One thing we must consider though is how beautiful this car physically looks. Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars has taken the wraps off its latest creation – a new midsize premium wagon (estate) dubbed as the new 2019 Volvo V60. Volvo intended the V60 to be a family all-rounder, underscoring its position as a carmaker with the tradition of producing good-looking yet practical cars.
To strongly deliver the message that the new V60 is a family all-rounder, Volvo went for an unconventional yet persuasive manner of introduction. Instead of unveiling the new V60 at a motor show or at an auto-related event, the carmaker revealed the new premium wagon at the driveway of an up-market villa in the suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden. It was driven into the driveway – where it really belongs -- by Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo’s senior vice president for the Europe, Middle East, Asia region. This way, Volvo was able to send a clear message that the new V60 is designed to cater to the needs and wants of modern family.
As introduced, the new V60 is underpinned by Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that also underpins the new XC60 and four top-of-the-line 90 Series cars. Genesis and Hyundai are finally working together to begin the establishment of a network of Genesis-exclusive dealerships in the United States.
It was just last Friday when a statement confirmed that existing Hyundai dealers in the United States were offered the opportunity to establish separate Genesis franchises. In other words, dealerships that already sell Genesis vehicles today will finally be able to apply for a Genesis franchise if they wish to do so. The automaker actually hopes to establish a network of around 100 retailers by the end of this year.
In the United States, there are around 350 Hyundai dealerships that carry Genesis models. And when the franchises begin to pop up, then this will help cement the idea of Genesis being a standalone brand, more than a sub brand of Hyundai. This also permits Genesis specific franchises only to perform warranty work. Initially, they will have a selection process for this, choosing from a limited number of dealers who are party to the Genesis Participation Agreemen. In the second quarter of 2017, Manfred Fitzgerald, boss of Genesis, denied any plans to build a halo sports car. Instead, he said that what the brand will concentrate on is to provide what majority of its customers want.
But without any notice, it seems like the guys from the premium South Korean automaker have changed their minds sometime last year. In fact, two executives from Hyundai confirmed that a new Genesis nameplate is already in the works. It’s possible that the clamor from the fans of Genesis was so deafening that the brand had no choice but to give in.
It was Luc Donckerwolke, vice president of Hyundai, and Woong-chul Yang, vice chairman or research and development, who confirmed the existence of this project to WheelsMagazine. They hinted that the vehicle will likely have two seats, and will be powered by a hybrid system. A lot of people have been wondering what is that on the Genesis G70’s grille. One really would not notice such a thing from afar, but if you get up close and personal, then you would see something planted on the center of its grille.
Well, experts say that this is a front-mounted radar that works with the driver assist system that the G70 features. This new technology features adaptive cruise control, emergency automatic braking, frontal collision warning and such. A number of automakers have this technology installed on the front end of their cars, but so far, not many of them have great results, but we have yet to see how it works on the Genesis G70.

Hyundai has unveiled to the global public its latest sedan that elegantly combines luxury and performance in one innovative package under its Genesis luxury brand – the new Genesis G70. While the reveal of the 2018 BMW M5 (F90) has been met with plenty of applause, there are a number of people who want a much wider trunk space from this model on top of the hot sedan's updated look, more powerful engine and new performance features like shifting from an all-wheel to a rear-wheel drive.
But since the Bavarian company has not come up with that yet, an artist from X-Tomi Design has rendered one. And what was created looks like a facelifted M5 Touring. It was back in 2007 when BMW last offered a Touring version of the M5, when it was released with the E61. Also, back then the company did not produce that many units of the M5 Touring, and the variant did not even reach US soil. Since then, BMW has skipped the touring trim in the last generation F10.
This is why we think that this rendering should encourage BMW to produce a Touring variant, which would make a lot of customers more satisfied. Under the hood of the 2018 M5 is a 4.4 liter V8 that produces as much as 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton metres) of torque. This powertrain lets it hit 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in just 3.4 seconds, before reaching its top speed of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour). The mere thought of a Rolls-Royce wagon is quite silly. But hey, it didn’t take us long before we realized that it isn’t that hideous after seeing X-Tomi Design’s latest spinoff.
The artist derived its digital rendition from the eighth generation Phantom following the limousine’s official launch in London. Rolls-Royce did come up with wagons way back when there were no SUVs yet. Do you remember the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud from 1959 that the coachbuilder converted into a wagon? There used to be four of them. As a matter of fact, the British automaker did those conversions together with H.J Mulliner and so the idea of a Rolls-Royce wagon isn’t totally new.
“Project Cullinan” instead is now in the works and will be the first sports utility vehicle to be offered officially by the luxury carmaker. Strangely, while Rolls-Royce’s SUV prototype was being developed, several spy shots have actually revealed some close resemblances to the all-new Phantom. It only seems logical since the dimensions of the current Phantom is virtually the same as a truck. Earlier this month, we were getting hints that Hyundai, along with its sister company Genesis, isn’t doing so well in the United States as well as in Europe. So this news may be a surprise for some. It looks like Genesis has plans on expanding its portfolio, and we mean adding many new models including the G70, at least one coupe, and an SUV.
Currently, the Korean luxury car maker carries the G90 and the G80 sedans in its lineup. And according to Motor Authority, Genesis has filed trademarks with the United Stated Patent and Trademark Office. Some of which are coupes under the names GT60, GT70, GT80 and GT90 - and all these have already been reserved for the company. It seems like they will be using “GT” for their coupes instead.
Back in 2016, the company had a leaked product roadmap that indicates their plan to release six distinct models by year 2020. And as of 2017, it already has three which are the aforementioned G90, G80, and the G70 sedans. This means that there will be three more that we should expect, and these are likely to be two SUVs (a small and a midsize), and a small sports coupe. You can’t force people to acquire something that does not interest them. This is one mistake that South Korean automaker Hyundai won’t likely make again. It has been recently announced that the Genesis will be taken completely out of the United Kingdom market. This is because after several attempts of luring customers to purchase its vehicles, no one seems to be paying much attention. And that’s after the Genesis G80 sedan has been marketed as a worthy adversary to the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Not so long ago, the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport made its debut at the 2016 LA Auto Show. But at that time, it did not have a price yet. And now that there is a price tag on it released along with the rest of the 2018 model lineup, it turns out the Sport model isn’t a cheap one.
And it doesn’t end there. If you compare last year’s prices to the rates of the 2018 models - particularly the G80 3.8 and the G80 5.0 Ultimate, you will notice a slight price hike. And that does not even include the extra $25 increase in destination fee.
Let us get in detail about the changes in price. For the G80 3.8 rear-wheel drive, the 2017 model had a price of $41,400, while the 2018 model is at $41,750, there is a noticeable difference of $350 for this model. Similarly, the all-wheel drive version also gets a $350 increase, with the 2017 model at $43,900, and the new 2018 model at $44,250. But what is really surprising is the price increase of the G80 5.0 Ultimate rear-wheel drive. The 2017 model was once priced at $54,500, and now that the 2018 model is out, it comes with a price tag of $57,000 - that is a $2,450 increase from the older model. Even as Volkswagen has just started taking orders for the VW Arteon in Germany. Arteon fanatics are already asking for a wagon variant of the Passat sedan. Some people actually prefer a long-roof version of it. It’s an awesome idea, if you ask us.

Alpina had previously teased customers and fans alike with a teaser for its upcoming 2018 B5 Bi-Turbo sedan. That is not enough it seems as the company has released another teaser showing the B5, this time the Wagon version, going through mountain roads. With this, the anticipation for the new B5 has increased further prior to its official debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
Based on what can be gathered from the video, it appears that the new B5 will have the XDrive configuration, and if not offered as standard then a possible option. There is no word however if the brand will release the D5 at the same time as the B5. If not, then it is likely that it will be a few months before Alpina will reveal the diesel version.
With regards to power, many are saying that the B5 will hopefully have at least the same capability as that of the 4.4-liter biturbo V8 engine. For people who love Hyundai’s i30 small family car but need more space and practicality, here is good news for you: the next generation of the Hyundai i30 Tourer (also called Hyundai i30 Wagon) will be soon arriving at dealerships as the 2017 model.
Before commencing sales, the South Korean carmaker is full on its intent to officially take the veil off the third generation of the Hyundai i30 Tourer at the upcoming 2017 Geneva Motor Show scheduled next month.
But already, Hyundai has divulged some details about the 2017 i30 Tourer that it thinks would help build up interest for the small family wagon. For instance, Hyundai has revealed how large the new i30 Tourer is. Its overall dimensions measure 4,585 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width and 1,465 mm in height. When the roof rack is specified, the overall height increases by 10 mm to 1,475 mm. Meanwhile, the five-door version of the third-gen Hyundai i30 Tourer is shorter than the four-door variant at 4,340 mm. Barely a month before its official debut, Hyundai gave everyone a taste of what’s to come with the 2017 Hyundai i30 Wagon. Despite what little was shown, it did not disappoint as the general consensus is that the boot capacity of this latest offering is expected to be greater than the previous model.
This newest version is the third generation of this family hauler and looking at its side, it’s apparent that the roofline has been extended and the rear end redesigned.
