AC Cars saves Zenos brand from extinction

British startup Zenos, which entered bankruptcy administration earlier this year is now back in business. The Norfolk-based sports car manufacturer was bought by a consortium of investors headed by AC Cars, another British brand. The consortium has acquired all of its assets including Zenos’ intellectual property, ten remaining cars assembled, as well as its Wymondham headquarters.

Zenos Cars was founded in 2012 by Ansar Ali and Mark Edwards ---both were formerly connected to two famous British automotive companies--Lotus and Caterham. The British automaker started out at Hethel Engineering Center with a small lineup of lightweight carbon-fiber sports cars including the Zenos E10. Using Ford EcoBoost for its engine, the Zenos E10 sports car is also made with an aluminum and composite chassis. Eventually, the company started experiencing financial setbacks due to high production cost.

AC Cars Limited meanwhile continues to manufacture the Cobra also known as the MkVI roadster or Shelby Cobra. Only recently, the British brand increased its lineup by building a right hand drive version of the iconic sports car.

British sports car startup Zenos Cars goes financially bust

Remember Zenos Cars, a British carmaker that specializes in designing and building lightweight and high-performance sports cars? If you are wondering how the company is faring with their E10 lightweight car, Zenos hasn’t been doing well and is, in fact, in dire financial straits. The severity of its financial problems has the company compelled to enter into administration, a process that is similar to bankruptcy protection.

According to a notice on the carmaker’s Web site, the company was placed under administration on January 16, 2017, with Irvin Milton Cohen and Gary Paul Shankland -- both of Begbies Traynor (London) LLP -- being appointed as Joint Administrators. Cohen and Shankland are now acting as Zenos agents without any personal liability. As Joint Administrators, Cohen and Shankland are now in charge of the management of the carmaker’s affairs, business and property.

Zenos’ humble beginnings can be traced to May 2012, when it was founded by Ansar Ali and Mark Edwards. Edwards and Ali were both employees at Lotus, and then at Caterham. However, Ali left Zenos in 2015 and joined the ranks at McLaren – although he remained a shareholder. According to his LinkedIn account, Ali is now the managing director for McLaren Special Operations (MSO) at McLaren Automotive. Edwards is currently Zenos’ chief executive, although his management powers are now gone.

New Zenos E10 R to be launched at the Performance Car Show in the UK

The Zenos E10 R road-legal trackday car will have its debut at the Autosport International/Performance Car Show from January 14 to 17, 2016. The unveiling of the E10 R follows the debut of Zenos' other offerings, the E10 and E10 S.

This latest Zenos vehicle is powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that is associated with the powerplant the powers the Ford Mustang and Focus RS. This engine develops up to 350bhp of output and 475Nm of torque, effectively allowing the E10 R to deliver 500bhp/ton. With this amount of power, the E10 R is set to become the brand’s quickest car to date.

It features a number of upgrades compared to the E10 and E10 S while still having a starting price of £39,995. These upgrades include a set of new lightweight wheels and uprated brakes, as well as modifications to the spring and damper rates. During the Autosport International/Performance Car Show, visitors will have a chance to take part in driver training day with Zenos.

Zenos unveils more powerful E10 S

Zenos unveiled at the 2014 Autosport International Show the new E10 sports cars but the manufacturer surprised us all with a new addition. The Zenos E10 S is a more powerful version of the E10 and is also more expensive and starts at GBP29,995 (+5,000 GBP).

If the Zenos E10 is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter Ford GDI engine with 200 bhp, the E10 S comes with a 2.0-liter Ford GDTI EcoBoost engine that produces 250 bhp of motive power and 400 Nm of max torque. With this, the E10 S can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds.

As a result, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4.5 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 135 mph or 217 km/h. Don’t expect a radical design change between the two models because you will not find any!
Just like the E10, the S version comes with an aluminum extrusion and carbon tub construction.

Zenos Cars will unveil its new ultra-light Zenos E10 sports car at the 2014 Autosport International Show slated from January 9 to 12, 2014 at Birmingham’s NEC. Pricing and additional technical details of the car will be unveiled during the event.

The Zenos E10 sports car is a track-focused but road legal open-top two-seater that is powered by a mid-mounted 2.0-liter Ford engine providing 200 bhp of max motive power. Weighing only 650 kg, the Zenos E10 delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 300 bhp per ton and could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds.

The new Zenos E10 is underpinned by a unique chassis architecture that consists of 18 panels – thereby staying true to its Zenos name: a combination of ‘zen’ to represent purity, and ‘os’, loosely Latin for ‘vertebra’. The ‘E’ in its name represents the first letter of the surname of co-founder Edwards, while the ‘10’ refers to the fact that the E10 is the 10th car project he has been involved in.
